What have your dog(s) been mistaken for?

    • Gold Top Dog

Kenya - a "police dog" (as if it's some sort of breed), a wolf, a puppy or a mix (b/c she is "small";), Malinois mix

Coke - Chow, Golden, Aussie, Rottie, GSD (he's a mix of mixes and likely several of those choices, but people will stop us and obsess over "guessing" what he is)

    Nikon - I don't think there's any mistaking him!

Everyone thinks my two little ones are both Chihuahuas. Have to correct them that one is a Chihuahua and the other a Min Pin. When I say Min Pin, I get stupid looks then they say 'Oh, a Miniature Doberman!'. Um.... NO. Not so much. That bugs the crud out of me. Although he has a BIG personality, the breed is nowhere even close.

People also think Hank is 'One of those Scottish Dogs'. (Scottie). Um, again NO. He's a Mini Schnauzer.

Considering Ari's breed is not really common, I never mind the mistakes :) The most common ones we get are:  black golden retriever (yeah....), golden/lab mix, black Irish setter (just as bad as a black golden lol), or setter/lab/golden mix. Or, we just simply get asked what type of mix she is. I enjoy it though, gives me an opening to discuss her breed with others!

Call me uneducated, but what is her breed? I'm not sure I have ever seen it mentioned here on the boards. I was looking at her pictures on the photo thread the other day and was admiring how gorgeous she is!

Ari is a flat-coated retriever.  And a gorgeous one at that!  A couple years ago BF and I were traveling to visit his brother in Florida.  We stopped at a gas station that had a McDonalds next door (adjoining parking lots).  There was a group in the McD's parking lot with 3 or 4 flat coats.  I was drooling!  BF had Harry out for a potty break, and the people waved at us and said something like, "Cute dog!"  I said thanks, then said, "I love your flat coats!"  They were all pretty shocked that I knew what breed their dogs were, lol!!

My two are pretty easily recognized as mutts, people always ask what mix they are.  We're not totally sure of either, but I think Harry is a Lab/Aussie mix (mostly), and Sammy is definitely a pointer mix of some sort.  People think Sammy has lab in him simply because he's black, but I honestly don't see any lab in him, physically or personality-wise.  I think he got his color from something else, or else has juuust enough lab to get the coloring.

Most people who ask me about Gizmo’s breed seem to assume she is a purebred of some sort.  Very rarely will anyone try to guess her breed.  When I say she's a mix they seem almost dissapointed to hear that.

I keep Gizmo in excellent condition, shiny coat, athletic body and clean which seems like that isn’t common around here.  I also only take her out into public if I know she will be well behaved and friendly to people.  All those factors seem to make people think she’s a "show dog"?  I often get asked where someone can get a dog like her, my answer… the animal shelter.

Because I keep Billy closely shorn all over no one ever has a clue he's a cocker.  Luna also stops people cold with "aaaaaaaaaaaaaa .... is that aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa .... hound something???"

Tink on the other hand is mistaken for an alien ALL the time.

"FRANK!!!!" (people yell it at her like she's supposed to open her mouth and give a smart aleck Men In Black verbal response -- you would think they were yelling at a long lost friend!!"

If she COULD respond in voice she'd say "Make that at least something brilliant like FRANCESCA you **MORON** -- I'm FEMALE!!!"

or maybe she just oughta use that fairy dust!!

    Thanks!

She is gorgeous, as are all the pictures of everone's pups here.

My Jack-Jack, who went over Rainbow Bridge in September, was a Lab/Aussie mix. I miss him so much.

My favorite is people think that Aspen is a mini *gak* Border Collie.  I'm not gakking at the BC confusion but the mini part.  He's an overly big Papillon people. *head desk*

Lol is it bad that I think paps sort of look like how I would envision a shrunken down Border Collie. XD  Kirby is also over sized for a pap.

The one I get most on him is Japanese chin or they will say Japanese something?  The breeds can have similar coats, but I would think the massive ears would be him give away.  I also have gotten long haired chihuahua and Pomeranian.  The worst though had to be when I was asked what kind of designer dog mix he was...bleh.  For the most part however I am surprised to find out how many people do know he is a pap or will call him a butterfly ear dog.

What's even worse is that my silky guinea pig gets mistaken as a dog all the time…”Is that one of those shi- zoos”  She’s also been called a cat, giant hamster, ferret, wig, mop…the list goes on.  It seems like no knows that she’s a guinea pig.  When I take her into a pet store, even the employees will be stumped on what she is.

My fawn colored piggy was once called a chihuahua puppy and was even offered a dog treatConfused.

Gobie (oversize minpin) mistaken for a chihuahua and a dachshund most of the time. He hs long long legs, so I don't get the dachshund but I assume it's the red color.

Lexi and Darby are mistaken for poodles all the time.  ALthough bichons are gettin more popular so usually people guess right these days.

All of mine are commonly referred to as "police dogs".......Sheba is thought by many, apparently, to be a white wolf.

Luke, who is small by Cavalier standards at 13.5lbs, and black and tan, a cocker. I understand sort of because a lot of dumb people here have cavaliers who are hugely fat, and the weight of a small Cocker, and have them groomed and clipped. Luke doesn't have full length hair yet, but it has never been trimmed into a Cocker cut.

Callie, who is a mix, does not have long hair, and would be very thin for her age by the standard, a golden.

Pigeon, a yorkie/poodle mix who is mostly poodle, was actually on the cover of the paper a few weeks ago with Callie. She was listed as a Yorkshire Terrier (as in, a purebred dog). Umm... now

A lady once asked me if Max was one of those "mean pit bulls that's gonna bite my face off" ... I'll admit I don't know exactly what's in the mix but I don't see any pittie there.

My Irish Setters have been called Redbone Coonhounds and Bloodhounds!

Cheyanne has been called a Pointer. I would think with all the spots Dalmatian would be the first guess, especially since I've never seen a Pointer in RL except at dog shows.

When I had Joker I was actually surprised how many people know what he was. And the only reason for so many right guesses on him it was due to people owning Weims! Heck I didnt know what a Vizsla was before seeing Rupert on here.

And of course Kujo never gets mistaken for any except the occasional ankle biter which she is not!

    • Gold Top Dog

We get the typical guess of Weim mostly, and redbone. One lady asked if he was a "why-men-hammer." LOL! So hard not to laugh in her face.

Last week at the vet a man in the waiting room said, "Not quite one yet, eh?" He had to pick up his jaw off the floor when I told him Rupert was five.
