What have your dog(s) been mistaken for?

    AgileGSD
I raised a Greyhound for someone once and had probably the strangest case of mistaken indentity with her. I had her at a local outdoor flea market one day and a woman thought she was.... a goat Huh? Even when once the woman brought her children up to talk to me and was right next to the dog, she thought still thought she was petting a goat. I had the awkward experience of saying "she's a dog actually, a Greyhound" when the woman commented that she always thought goats "had feet more like hooves".

I would not have been able to control myself.  I would have had to pat the woman on the head & told her how "pretty" she was.

Bevo has been mistaken for a greyhound.  He is overly tall, & at the moment, he had his ears pinned back instead of up, so it was a reasonable mistake.  I had a PetSmart employee argue with me, at length, because she KNEW that he was "one of those vicious pit bulls."

When she was younger, Cher was mistaken for a Xolo.  She was bald at the time, so it wasn't a horrible guess.

    Both Boxers are called pitties.

Shooter has been called a pocket beagle before.  I'm pretty sure that the woman who called him that was smoking crack though, so I'm not sure that it counts.  He's also been mistaken for a basset puppy.

Schatzi has been called a min pin.  I'm not sure how you get min pin from a dog with 2.5" legs, big floppy ears, & a tail...

Angel is always a doodle or poo of some kind, because the person's friend, family member or aquaintance has a dog who looks just like her.  I refer to her as the little black, fuzzy mutt.

Actually I did have a guy at the DP insist that Jack was a rottie mix--even after I insisted that I had his papers and had seen his papers....

    • Gold Top Dog

As a puppy Aesop was called a Chow/Sharpei mix. (the only Chows in town are BYB dogs with tiny feet and pointy noses...so I think a bigheaded Chow pup was confusing to them. (the next thing the woman asked me was how much he cost.....)

Jules is usually identified as a yorkie...sometimes a Silky.

No one usually guesses anything for Grimm..just ask what he is..same with Ginger...people just usually want to hold her.

And Newt is called a puppy, because apparently grown dogs shouldn't be 4 lbs :p

Wow...Some people really need to learn their breeds. o.o I love how GSD are referred to as police dogs, as if they're the only breed used for them. I'll admit some breeds I'll mess up, but uh...can I use my excuse of only ever owning mutts as an excuse? :P Seriously...a guinea pig as a Chihuahua...seriously?!

    Beejou

Funny thread! Everyone and their brother asks if T-Bone is a "Shiloh Shepherd" erm.... no. He's a classic black and tan, short coated GSD. I find it interesting people take wilder and wilder breed guesses as designer dogs and not-exactly-a-real-breed dogs become more popular.

A bit off topic but we were originally going to get a Shiloh Shepherd after Toby passed away. Sort of glad we didn't 'cause I got my Simmers and I love him. :)

One lady asked if Toots was a beagle. Have you ever seen a beagle with up-right ears and no tail? C'mon people.

Her coloring sort of reminds me of a beagle but seriously?! o.o Speaking of Corgi's Simba's made friends with one and holy cow they are sturdy for being so small.

My patterdale has been mistaken for a lab, chiwauwa, daschund, pitbull, staffy, miniature pinscher.

Bug, pappy mix is always mistaken for a sheltie, had people insist she was one. shes 11.5 lbs, black and tan, butterfly ears, short muzzle....people are wierd!

Bailey is a purebred Whippet and a 'rare' color purebred Greyhound(because Greyhounds are only suposed to be grey, duh)

He is also a purebred yellow Lab, & a rare color of German Shepherd (the person that called him that said "What a shame his ears didnt go up all the way, you should get them fixed"...)

Chelsie, you'll appreciate this.  I have a few pictures of Joey up in my cube at work.  Granted, it's difficult to judge size from a photo but I about DIED when a co-worker asked if Joey was a Great Dane.  Really?  At maybe forty pounds, he's the tinest, oddest color Dane I've ever seen.

Some people have asked if Joe is a Carolina Dog.  I could see the resemblance but the fact of the matter is that my boy is pure mutt.

Gracie has "been" a greyhound, "Rock-weiler", dachshund & deer, according to strangers.  The dachshund was sort of understandable - she was only a baby and I was carrying her into an event.  Otherwise, she's pretty recognizable for what she is, but I really wonder who has ever seen a black greyhound with tan points, a docked tail, and cropped ears.

Most of my Labs were very fieldy looking.  Too tall and leggy with lousy coats.  I can't count how many people told me they weren't Labs.  Twister is a JRT but because he doesn't look like Eddie on the show Frazier, he must not be purebred.  A groomer told me Rex was a Shiba Inu. huh?  Belle is often mistaken for a Lab.  Go figure.

I don't let it bother me or take it in a bad way.  There's lots of stuff I don't know much about, like models of cars.  I probably couldn't identify most of the cars on the road. :(

Of course, I don't hang around car dealers and tell people they are driving a Mustang when it's a Corvette.  lol

Don't let their long and low build fool you. Corgis are extremely sturdy! Tootsie believes shes a Diva, but shes definitely no pansy.

They really are! I sort of want one some day now...haha! At first I thought this Corgi was aggressive, but he's fine once he can actually sniff you. Simba plays rough with him and he rolls with the punches really easily!

Talus has been called a Sharpei, a horse, a lion, "One of those Hooch dogs" and my favorite, last week a man walking by the house, (Talus loves to sit in the van with the door open), asked if Talus was one of them  "Bull Masters"...

When I say Dogue de Bordeaux....I usually get "A What?"

Sharpei? o.o If I didn't know the breed I'd just ask if it was some sort of mastiff. I saw one recently in petco and oh my god they're gorgeous and huge!

The Dogue de Bordeaux that I've been taking care of for 3+ years now has been called a bulldog/pit, "Hooch", boxer/mastiff, a mastiff/pit, the list goes on. They're a rare breed (around here anyway), so I don't really expect anybody to really know what he is.

    • Gold Top Dog

True, they're rare up here as well... most dog owners say mastiff automatically, we just define it...
