my answer would have been his emphasis on calm. If CM had come on my TV a few years earlier I would have had a lot to thank him for, for that alone.
Now that's my favorite thing about Cesar. Clothier and McConnell touched on it in the books I have read by them. But Cesars was the first I've seen that really emphasized it and communicated how important it is. I'd always known what a difference being calm and assertive made when working with horses but never carried it over to dogs for some reason. Who was the influence that emphasized calmness a few years before CM did? I've been trying to find more information on that aspect of dog training/behavior and always love finding a new source.
It came from working with horses for me, too. [

If you read much on Suzanne's site, she's been working with horses for 34 years or so.
A trainer friend of mine refers to it as the "horse/dog" gene some people have from working with the two species.
"Calm and assertive" for me came from horses, long before I applied it to dogs and then watched Cesar's show. [

CM did spend a lot of his formative years on his grandfather's ranch, so he no doubt picked up some "horse sense" from him. I know he credits his grandfather's interactions with the farm dog pack, with a lot of his early concepts.
I'd be curious to know more about this.
