Someone said on another thread that past behaviour is indicative of future behaviour and I agree with that 100%.  In that light, even if a dog is "salvageable" I question whether they SHOULD be "salvaged" over the thousands of nicer, safer animals doomed to die in shelters....

This has been said 3 times here on this thread and it so needs a rebutt.  But I am biting my tongue for respect of the OP, I think it is off topic.

Just to emphasise - that was ONLY my opinion.  I think you are right and the topic deserves a new thread.

Edit:  New thread opened.... DPU, is that OK?  Was that what you had in mind?  In any case I think its an interesting topic.  Sorry.  Carry on.

Wow those "macho trainers" sound really bad [:'(], good thing that i dont know any of them right now

I also googled it and this came up:

    Woof!! [8D]

So much better than all those little girly men trainers with the high-pitched, squeeky voices! [:D]

This isn't about "us vs them" so much as a "boys against the girls" type of conversation to me.

So the opposite of overly "macho" might be overly "nurturing"? Hmmm, I don't know...

I don't know - our local obedience club has a girl trainer who is pretty "macho".  I think it's more descriptive of attitude than gender. [;)]
And, "nurturing" could apply to wolf mothers regurgitating a piece of blood-soaked flesh into their pup's mouth.  I don't think of wolf mothers as furry social workers.
Again, it seems we have the covert "us" versus "them", as evidenced by the spit on Tina's screen.  But, my question is which of us is us, and which of us is them?  You think you are us and I think us is us.  Way OT, I guess, but maybe good for a discussion on NDR about the effect of perspective. [:D]

Wasn't that just in reaction to the funny body builder's pic??

    I was just laughing.

You know, when I went back and looked at him again, I can see why. [;)][:D]

    macho shock-collar trainer

in the hands of a leash-popping, e-collar weilding, yelling, stomping, alpha rolling trainer

You may choose to lump them in if you feel that's your experiences, but I'll be honest and say I disagree with the characterization that implies they go hand in hand with "macho" trainers, based on my experiences and exposures.

...When dogs with the potential to be aggressive actually are, we should adjust their attitude with a 158g hollow point to the brain stem.

Sorry I can#%92t leave this.  In your post prior, you and I are in sync with not trusting if behavior was exhibited in the past but the dog was rehabbed.  You would not take the dog but I would.  In the above post I misread it before and I see that if the potential exist without behavior would you accept the risk.

Now, the title includes the word macho and your very last sentence is macho.  I am curious to know if you have done this or if you would do this to some else#%92s dog or if you would do this to your residence dog?  Macho by definition is the exaggerated sense of one#%92s power.  Isn#%92t there anything in between that you would do before you took such action?

Tough love that is practiced by wolves for wolves.  A lot different than a human stealing the epileptic pup and eating it.  Vive la difference!

Billy--I see where you are coming from and pretty much agree with you....

As far as "macho" trainers....I don't think that I would call any sort of methodology "macho" in itself, but I will say that in both the horse and dog world, I have encountered "trainers" who I would consider blowhards.  My feeling on any trainer (or any professional handling my animals) is that if I speak to them and do not feel 150% comfortable with their methods and what how they plan to handle the animal, they will not touch my dogs or my horses.

The only experience I've had with someone that I considered "macho" (for lack of a better term) was the farrier that worked on my horse.  My horse is an OTTSTB (off the track standardbred) and can is a sensitive horse (emotionally and physically).  This guy treated my gelding just fine when I was around while he was worked on (although Snafu was always nervous around him--I should have taken the hint).  However, I was informed by the barn manager (who is also a friend of mine) that Snafu was being treated very rough by this guy when I was not around for the trimmings (and this is coming from an old school horsewoman--if she theought my horse deserved what he was getting she would have been up front about it).   We switched farriers, and my horse has been much calmer ever since.

What really someone makes a "never" statement--"I've never met a horse I couldn't ride," etc.  To me, not only is that kind of talk unprofessional, but it's just begging Fate to send some particuarly rank animal your way just to prove you wrong......

I have to say, I can't believe Admin has not shut down this thread. It was clearly started to stir up nothing but trouble. How very sad.
