Billy--I see where you are coming from and pretty much agree with you....
As far as "macho" trainers....I don't think that I would call any sort of methodology "macho" in itself, but I will say that in both the horse and dog world, I have encountered "trainers" who I would consider blowhards. My feeling on any trainer (or any professional handling my animals) is that if I speak to them and do not feel 150% comfortable with their methods and what how they plan to handle the animal, they will not touch my dogs or my horses.
The only experience I've had with someone that I considered "macho" (for lack of a better term) was the farrier that worked on my horse. My horse is an OTTSTB (off the track standardbred) and can is a sensitive horse (emotionally and physically). This guy treated my gelding just fine when I was around while he was worked on (although Snafu was always nervous around him--I should have taken the hint). However, I was informed by the barn manager (who is also a friend of mine) that Snafu was being treated very rough by this guy when I was not around for the trimmings (and this is coming from an old school horsewoman--if she theought my horse deserved what he was getting she would have been up front about it). We switched farriers, and my horse has been much calmer ever since.
What really someone makes a "never" statement--"I've never met a horse I couldn't ride," etc. To me, not only is that kind of talk unprofessional, but it's just begging Fate to send some particuarly rank animal your way just to prove you wrong......
