Safest canned food?

IF I used canned, I'd not be buying it now.....not any brand.  There are companies that I do trust, but not with my dogs lives.

Of course you could say they about any food, pet or human. I think there's still room for people to make intelligent decisions about what they feed to their pets and eat themselves. If people are able to homecook properly, more power to them, but there are still many brands out there not recalled, not using ingredients which are part of the recall, and sourcing their own ingredients if they don't manufacture their own product.

That may be the case, but there are foods being recalled and the tainted item wasn't even listed on the ingredients list.........so, what do you do with that?

Therefor, new strategy at my house.....going to Sam's Club and buying meat in bulk.......cook it up and voila....[;)]

But if the company makes their own food, they know what is going in the food and if they have any sense of morals they will make sure, if they haven't already, that their food is not contaminated.

That is why I'm feeding Merrick canned right now.  They have announced that they do not buy anything from China and that they make the decisions on what goes into their foods because they make it themselves and package it themselves.

Solid Gold also says that they do not buy anything from China.

I wouldn't feed Merrick even if it was given to me.
That is a company with big QC problems......

I just switched  to  Canidae canned, for the canned portion of dog's diet and she loves it.  They use all ingredients that are from the US.  [linkhttp://www.canidae.com/ingredients/thefinest.html]http://www.canidae.com/ingredients/thefinest.html[/link]

I'm feeding Canidae canned also. I'm too paranoid to use anything else right now. I also feed Murphy Canidae dry and Evo dry with the canned. If any of these become part of the recall I'm going to have a complete meltdown. [:@]

I agree with you..before the recall I used cans... I am now scared to use any no matter who makes ir..

I'm feeing Nature's Variety canned now. It's grain free and not made by American Nutrition. I don't even feel all that comfortable with meat for humans right now.... I think ALL meat is a risk at this time, it's just a matter of trying to minimize the chances of feeding tainted food.

I agree but will only use dry pet foods that are made by the company in their own plant. As for canned foods, I don't know if any companies make their own except for Merrick, so I'm cooking meat to mix in.

How do you know where NV is made?  After the Menu thing, the list came out and was reported that NV would not disclose where their food was made, but it was not at a Menu plant.  So if they won't disclose where their food is made, then how do you know it's not made by AN?

Everything I've read says that Nature's Variety canned is made by Menu foods. The canned doesn't have any grains anyway and it's AN that added rice protein to the grain free foods.

I would stay away from any foods, canned or dry, that are sold in Petco's, Petsmarts and supermarkets.  Companies that sell their product at the big chain stores  have to produce in huge volume and also sell their product to the retailers at low cost than they would at a small indepent store.  When mass production and lowering cost starts coming into play, thats' when issues start happening and corners get cut. That is why I feel safe with those only sold at independent stores - Natura brands, Canidae, Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Eagle Pack, Timberwolf etc...  It's a lot easier for these companies to know what is going into their products when they are working with smaller batches and don't have to cut costs to sell at the big box stores and supermarkets. Just my opninion though, and I can understand why some of you would not feel comfortable feeding any canned food right now.

I first found Innova at a PetCo.  Petsmart sells Blue Buffalo and both in some locations will sell Natural Balance.  I bought Misty's NB at Petco.  Purina is HUGE and they still subcontract out for some of their stuff.  But, they've only had, what?  Two lines recalled?  I don't think that Nutro has had any, and Nutro is rarely sold in the big box stores.  So does that make NUTRO everyones top choice?

I don't think we can generalize that if a food is sold at a box store it automatically sucks.

Really?  All the Petsmarts and Petcos by me have entire aisles devoted to Nutro.  And Nutro did have recalls, some of their canned and pouch foods were made at menu.

But most of their products contain grain glutens and fractions which should be avoided (at least for now)

And I'm not saying that if it's sold at a big box store it automatically sucks, I just meant that right now I am avoiding buying from companies that sell there product there for the reasons I mentioned.  And like I said, I completely understand why someone may want to avoid all canned foods because I know that no one knows anything for sure and what is true today may be false tomorrow.  It is just the rule of thumb I am using right now and what I am suggesting for those in which homecooking is not an option.

The argument could be made that the smaller names are more likely to have problems since they generally don't operate their own facilities and have to outsource their production. So far this has centered around contract manufacturers like Menu, Chenango and American that are making small store brands, smaller premium labels and specialized products like pouches and cuts & gravy. So there is something to be said for cutting out that middle man.

I say Evangers.  My loves the Hunk of Beef.  Also, I was very happy with the answers that I got from them when I called to ask questions about their food and all the recalls
