Safest canned food?

People forget sometimes, but it wasn't too long ago Merrick was in the hot seat.  I am in agreement with you about Merrick and the quality control.

From what i see the Triumph canned food is good and the ingridients are clean - here is the link

I know it isn't being sold all over the US, but for those who have access to it I would recomend it, and so is my Vet.

how do you know the ingredients are "clean"?  Natural Balance had a great rep until the packing company they use added contaminated ingredients that weren't listed on the food and that (so they say) they knew nothing about. Just because a company is claiming their ingredients are all made in the US doesn't mean anything in the face of such unethical behavior by the packing companies. Unless the company has its own packing plant, AND says all their ingredients come from the US I'd stay far away.
Which leaves Evangers, I guess, as the only "safe" canned foods right now.

That was 3 years ago.  3 years ago.  And in 3 more years we'll all be feeding Royal Canin, Chicken Soup (remember the Diamond recall 2 years ago.  Nope, we forgot about that), and Natural Balance again (which by the way Natural Balance has had odd objects in it's canned food too), but we'll still be pickin' on Merrick.   Maybe, just maybe Merrick has improved upon some of their previous issues.  After all, lots of people feed it and have never had a problem including myself.

If we want to feed a food with the absolute best quality control, then maybe we should all  feed Nestle Purina.  They are the only company so far that has upgraded their testing laboratories to detect melamine.

Actually their last recall was 1 year ago. The one before that, 3 years ago. The one before that, 4 years ago.

Not the best track record for cleaning up their act.

Personally I think it's cheaper/more effective to feed premade raw instead of canned, which is why I cut cans out a few months ago in favor of Nature's Variety raw.  I can't say that I would feed any cans right now due to all the recalls; probably the closest I would come is Fromm's cans since they're made in a plant that processes human food.  All the premium manufacturers (eagle, NV, solid gold, natura, wellness, etc) need to get together and build a plant that produces cans for all of their brands instead of contracting to Menu, Diamond, etc.

Does it bother you that their plant is in China?

A little bit, but not as much as something made at Menu right now.

After the NB recall my local store brought in Evangers (I just found it yesterday) since I'd heard raving reviews here and the fact that it's hand canned at their own place.... I bought lik 10 cans (without the girls having ever tried it). I mixed somoe "CHICKEN" with their BATM last night... man, you'd think they'd been eating MY dinner. They dug in! :) And this morning I mixed in some Turkey Stew. ... apparently it is also delicious.

So, a big [sm=wink2.gif] from us on Evangers, if you get the chance to pick some up. (Also, wow, LOOK AT ALL THE NEW SMILIES!!! [:D] YAY!)

And the Nature's Variety Raw is made at their own plant, which makes it a safer option than most of the canned foods right now.
