Their pouches are pouched in China by the same human stew plant company that pouches Fromm.

Fromm doesn't have any pouches. Does that facility do pouches and cans?

ORIGINAL: Luvntzus  So I'd like to get opinions on what you guys think are the safest canned foods right now. Thank you in advance!!

I mentioned Abady prior because regardless of who makes their canned, the company avoids the very ingredients that seem to
be causing the problem...GLUTEN.  I bet cha they're all going to say they slipped this stuff in their without our knowledge or consent.  They all want to bolster the performance of the feed as cheaply as possible, yet at the same time play this marketing game with the string beans and carrots, anything to avoid giving your dog more costly meat source proteins.  Abady has been avoiding gluten meals in general (although I have seen corn-gluten meals used in the past and possibly still used now in some of the higher end Granular) and has always professed a reliance on gluten source proteins is problematic and can cause dangerous health issues.  Abady for a long time has been alerting consumers about the misguided nonsense spewing from the people over at the Whole Dog Journal and how they promote some of the worst and possibly dangerous feeds imaginable in efforts to legitimize omnivore targeted nutrition.  Abady is not feeding omnivores; you get meat source proteins, no reliance on gluten to meet the needs of the ration and the dog.  If it is ;potatoes and apples you desire you need to look elsewhere.

Anyone care to get a little exotic?  Some Succulent Chicken, Rabbit or Duck maybe? ummm yummy.

Miss Ginger, how many cans of Merrick does it take to feed all your dogs?

This is just my personal opinion, but right now I'd say that NO CANNED FOOD IS SAFE.  I had gotten my gal at the feed store to order some canned for my cats, but I called her and asked her to cancel that for now.  She totally got it.  I won't buy it right now, and she completely understands why.  What she was getting for me is Felidae and so far this company has been untouched by the recalls.  But.......

I'm not a gullible person.  It makes SENSE to me that yeah, AN could have done this to all it's client companies without their knowledge.  If one company had made that claim, I'd be skeptical, but we've got several respected companies and I'm betting that they all have suits filed against AN by now.  What I have heard is that the AN attorney contacted the companies BEFORE the FDA could to alert them to the situation.  I guess that somehow he felt that it would be better to rat themselves out?  Not sure.

Some rocket scientist[8|] came up with this scheme to increase AN profits without cutting the protein levels in the products they are contracted to produce.  So, lets substitute some of the meat for nice and cheap imported rice products which will SHOW the protein levels to be so high if these dummies that trusted us happen to test for protein levels in their product.....I can just hear the bean counters discussing the savings and how tremendously removing "just a little" meat will increase their profits.

I've seen too many quality control issues with Merrick to ever trust that food, and too much controversy surrounding Abady to trust that one.  I stand by my opinion for now that there is NOT a safe canned food.

edited:  I was about to rotate chicken into our homecooked, but I'm waiting to see about that.  The hearings from today did say it got into the food supply. They do not know for sure that chickens were fed it, but they were looking into it.  They just don't yet know about if chickens were fed this stuff.  And, they say the pork was limited to certain states, but who would want to chance that?  Nobody.  It was a number of states that got the pig feed.  [:@][:@][:@]

Because melamine is so readily excreted in the kidneys, I would bet that very little is actually retained in the muscle tissue, and wouldn't worry TOO much for now.

I'm sticking with TWO canned for now.  I was rotating with the various 95% meat offerings, but I think sticking with one brand (I use TWO kibble as well) reduces any chance of problems for now.  The TWO canned is grain-free (poultry, fish, sweet potato).  Some have said their dogs don't like it, but mine goes nuts for it.

What seems to be safe today could be on the recall list tomorrow.[8|]
I quit feeding canned food, and actually started feeding more turkey, chicken and beef.

I just switched  to  Canidae canned, for the canned portion of dog's diet and she loves it.  They use all ingredients that are from the US.  [linkhttp://www.canidae.com/ingredients/thefinest.html]http://www.canidae.com/ingredients/thefinest.html[/link]

Of course you could say they about any food, pet or human.  I think there's still room for people to make intelligent decisions about what they feed to their pets and eat themselves.  If people are able to homecook properly, more power to them, but there are still many brands out there not recalled, not using ingredients which are part of the recall, and sourcing their own ingredients if they don't manufacture their own product.

That may be the case, but there are foods being recalled and the tainted item wasn't even listed on the ingredients list.........so, what do you do with that?

Therefor, new strategy at my house.....going to Sam's Club and buying meat in bulk.......cook it up and voila....[;)]

If that isn't the truth.. they start off pulling one food off and then they say that is the only one in there company and then 2 weeks later its more of there stuff...

No,  what I meant is that By Nature's Pouches are made at the same human stew plant that Fromm's cans are made.  Sorry for the typo, I just got so used to saying pouches.
