A few details on the recall

Why, because everyone is feeding what they think is best for their own dog.

Mudpuppy, in this case,,,where I wrote this, I meant that our regular posters on the nutrion threads, all  ( most ) feed different food which  each of us think its best for our dog, in my case Eagle Pack.

    Your pound feeds all canned?

"The Colorado Humane Society is also feeling the effects. 98% of it's wet dog food has been discarded because of the recall. "For us it's a crisis, we really need wet dog food," said Susan Fredinburg from the human society."

It's all over the news locally regarding the shortage of wet food at many shelters, not just the CHS. I imagine this echoes what many shelters across the country are experiencing. Many shelters feed wet food for the same reasons others do.

ullr, i thought you meant your pound was running out of all dog food. those dogs are really lucky that they usually get wet- that's a luxury at the pound here

I think many of the shelters actually tossed the dry food from the recalled brands, too, just to be on the safe side. For a day or two there was a lot of confusion on what type of food (wet or dry) was in the recall. In reality, all of the shelters out here are beyond crowded; there is always a shortage of food- wet and dry. Now it's just more pronounced.

What a darn shame,,,,,for goodness sake,,,bad enough there are so many poor pets without homes. Shelters are having enough problems just trying to keep the dogs alive,,,and they have to now throw their food away!

What I also find sad is that these are all foods purchased by pet owners who also wish to save a buck...

Regardless if it is only wet food with chunks, it is better to be safe than sorry. This SHOULD be yet another reason to not buy from- ever again- any of these manufacturers. No excuses...[>:]

Nutro was included in the recall, which is a premium food and not a food people purchase to save a buck.

On the other hand the canned food which represents 65% of all canned cat food sales, Friskies, was not included in the recall and is a food people buy to save a buck.

Any brand that can be purchased at PetSmartCoWhatever is not a 'premium' brand. Nutro is not a premium brand- more like a mid-grade. Unfortunately, many "Indy" shops that are not in the know, sell it as a premium. Start here: [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=labelinfo101]http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=labelinfo101[/link]. Get your bag of Nutro and go through the list. If you live in an area where good food is inaccessible, then have it shipped to you. It is well worth the cost.

The bottom line is that we all want to feed our pets the best. Just because your dog food is more expensive does not mean it is premium, either.

Uh, huh.  Yes, I know my dog food.  I've read dog food project.  Again Nutro is not a food people purchase to save a buck.  In the world of dog food manufacturing, distribution and retail (I'm a territory manager for a  pet product distributor)  Nutro is considered a premium along with Pro Plan and Eukanuba.  Now Eagle Pack, Natura, Tiberwolf and some others are considered super premium.

I still don't understand why so many folks are defensive about this recall. We all are worried and we all are affected by so many deaths. I keep reading more everyday, and I'm afraid there are more to come...It really is sad to see so much bickering when once all is said and done we all want the SAME EXACT thing; healthy dogs and cats.

Anyway, here is how I look at it (and this is my opinion only). The analogy may be poor, but it makes sense to me. I realize some of you do not like the way I think, but here goes: There are really only three tiers of food. Regular, Mid-grade, Premium (think fuel here). What may be considered premium in some parts of the country is only considered mid-grade in other parts of the country. It just depends on where you set the standards. Me, I look at it the same way. The marketing is different in various parts of the country, too. Some have regular, premium, and super premium. In reality, the "premium" is actually mid-grade, but if you fill up at Shell versus Conoco, they will use different tactics. IMVHO

Please do not distort my view or call me names because of it. It's an anology (not great, but again, I think it gets my point across). I do not recall ever seeing a defined list of nomenclature regarding premium versus super premium. It just depends on who does the study. No one is right or wrong in what it's called. So, yeah, you may call your food premium, but to me, I may call it a mid-grade. Who is right? That doesn't really matter, so why be defensive?

I think there are some foods we can all agree on that are not good. I saw a commercial last night on a dog food that says it will add 2 years to your dogs life. I thought, gee, think of how many MORE years said dog will live if really paid attention to what you were feeding it?

GoodNews: The Colorado Humane Society received TRUCK LOADS of wet and dry food since the newscast was made two days ago regarding the shortage at some of the shelters. So much food, in fact, they have to store a lot of it off-premises. It almost made me want to cry.

Meanwhile, rumor now on the news is that WalMarts across the country have been found to still be selling AFFECTED brands of food. What a mess!
    • Gold Top Dog
The walmart bit sadly isn't a rumor.  I checked 4 wallyworlds, all within about a 75-100 mile radius....these are only in the "bigger towns" in my remote little neck of the woods...and all three still had the stuff on their shelves.  Speaking with a manager isn't gonna happen.  They are always "out to lunch" or "off today".....  I did call corporate and report all 4...a considerable effort considering the amount of time they leave you on hold listening to stupid music.....

I had a urge to go to our Walmart to check things out but its a 80 mile round trip. I am going to call my brother-in-law (when he gets home) he works at Walmart and see what he has to say. Did they take the recalled food off the shelves or not.

I finally got ahold of Three Dog Bakery today and they assured that the Entr`ee for Dogs sold at Walmarts was not affected and they have no accociation with Menu foods. My mind said as much before I made the call but I had to call anyway just to ease my mind. Wellness web site said their canned food is not affected either. Timberwolf web site says the same not affected. So why does my hand tremble when I get ready to open up a can of food.

I think you need to ask is whether these were the affected lots.

Petsmart had the brands on their shelves but had a notice posted that everything that was there was checked to insure that it wasn't the affected lot numbers.

Correct.  i even reported on another thread--i think--that hubby and i were at walmart yesterday and the recalls were still there.  in fact, a couple of ladies, my hubby and i were talking about it.  One knew about the recall, the other didn't.
    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, I had my list with me and checked out the lot numbers.  All four stores still had "tainted" food on the shelves.  In ONE Wallyworld I had a little time to kill and was in a particularly *itchy mood so I threw every last can in a cart, took it to customer service and LEFT it, with a copy of the list.  I very loudly told them that THESE items were on a NATIONAL RECALL and it was extraordinarily irresponsible of them to have NOT removed them from their shelves or at the very least posted warnings...and of course muttered about corporate greed as I stalked out of the store.  Of course, I'll never be able to show my face in that store again.......that's ok...it's almost 80 miles away...I don't get up there too often!
