A few details on the recall

still be selling AFFECTED brands of food

I think you need to ask is whether these were the affected lots.

Petsmart had the brands on their shelves but had a notice posted that everything that was there was checked to insure that it wasn't the affected lot numbers.

That's why I said rumor has it that they were affected cans. A rumor is just that- a rumor. There isn't a wal mart in my town so I have no way of confirming this locally. But I've read on other web forums that they were indeed affected cans in some stores in Colorado.

Since they had the lots on the shelf I sure would have made sure that I talked to the manager and the local news at the same time.  I would think that the FDA would also be interested that they were still selling the product and I would insure that they knew.

The FDA is conducting an investigation to ensure the effectiveness of the recall. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-866-895-2708.

Regarding Nutro or any kibble, please phone or email FDA to find out more info. I read this message this morning-

       I read the information on the link you posted and then checked all of Nutro's dry senior kibbles; both the Max and Natural Choice, and didn't see wheat gluten listed in the ingredients. From the link;

About 3 weeks ago her dog became seriously ill and was diagnosed with kidney damage. He was put on meds, and fed a diet of boiled chicken and rice. Last Wednesday, his kidney tests were near normal, and she was advised she could begin feeding kibble again. This is KIBBLE. She fed him one of the varieties of NutroMax senior on Thursday (his regular food) and Friday morning he threw it up and became lethargic again. Saturday she took him back to the vet and he stayed in ICU until he passed away yesterday. Upon some investigation by her and the vet, they discovered her brand of kibble contained wheat gluten. Her vet advised her to call the FDA and report it. She did, and they told her that she was the 49th caller to report problems with DRY KIBBLE, but they needed to do a thorough investigation before "unduly alarming the public".

The Max Senior does have ground whole wheat and corn gluten meal; maybe she misread the ingredients? This is really getting scary.

This is precisely why I've been saying that for now I'd not trust any products in the affected lines.  the diamond recall started out small and mushroomed.  This one started out not so small, and now look......

I still don't understand why so many folks are defensive about this recall. We all are worried and we all are affected by so many deaths. I keep reading more everyday, and I'm afraid there are more to come...It really is sad to see so much bickering when once all is said and done we all want the SAME EXACT thing; healthy dogs and cats.

I agree with you 100%, we are all worried and affected by so many deaths....
that is why I don't know why we are even talking grades of food here at all right now. While it is true that most of this food that is recalled is of the grocery store variety....but not all.   Any food company can have this happen to them...none of them grow their own animals, plants, grains, fruits or veggies.  Don't ever think for the world, that your company is exempt from this.  Even home cooking could bring in an eventual problem unfortunately.

As far as the Diamond Food company,,,I don't think it started out small and grew,,,I read about that on the dog forums way before it hit the news, and I think that was where the problem was. If I remember correctly,,,about November they recalled and no one picked it up on the national level until around Christmas time. By then there was a lot of food sold.   A lesson was learned by that I think,,,this recall is being broadcasted everywhere and all the time.  Thank goodness...because I think this one is a whole heck of a lot bigger.

That link to the possible problem with kibble really bothers me a lot. I sure hope someone gets on that REAL QUICK and either gets the word out on that immediately or squash the rumor!

What I have heard they don't know what's causing the problem with the food that's been recalled..no one knows if it's Wheat gluten... there still trying to find the cause....I have to agree with Glenda I would not trust any of  it

If you look at the bigger picture, grades of food, and ALL grades of food, is very relevant, IMO. Last time I checked it was the Nutrition forum, right? [;)]

Like you say, this could happen to anybody. No one is arguing that it won't happen to brand X or brand Y. I certainly haven't seen any statements to that effect.

Now if only this board could keep just ONE thread going on the same topic...some important links might not be overlooked.

I agree.   BUT to me talking about the recall and all of the sick pets because of tainted food and a conversation about grades of food should not even be in the same thread!  We talk about grades of food here all the time,,,usually several conversations going on about it.
And there many opinions on food.
BUT this thread was about the recall, I can't see talking grades of food here...if someone hadn't brought it up there would be no bickering on this thread because we DO all want the same thing..healthy pets.
    That is my opinion!

Ok that's it..I am now going to cook for my dogs...I dont know whats fact from fiction anymore..I just read this on another site...And I feed Innova...Now I am worried....I mailed Innova yesterday and have had no reply...Does anyone know if this is true?  or if Innova uses menu foods

I found this on MSNBC board.

Old Mother Hubbard has some of it's products manufactured by Menu foods.... the company would not specify which foods.
Compiled from several sources - I'm not guaranteeing the information to be 100% accurate, but it does expand on the recall list:
Additional companies with some products manufactured by Menu foods or which may have been manufactured with Menu foods - so far not on recall list: Wellness, Old Mother Hubbard, Eagle Pack, Natura canned, Innova canned, California Naturals canned, Castor and Pollux.
Companies with no products manufactured by Menu foods - Solid Gold, Canidae, Flint River Ranch, Merrick.
I wouldn't feel safe feeding any sort of canned or wet food right now.

I  e-mailed John and will let you know about Eagle Pack as soon as he replies; I know they have their own plant for their dry food but don't know about their canned. Merrick makes its own canned food but Solid Gold doesn't; I know Diamond makes the SG dry, don't know who makes their canned. Wellness canned is made by Menu Foods. Since Jessie is allergic to chicken, salmon, and white and sweet potatoes, I buy very little canned food and cook meat to add to her kibble. If it becomes any more likely that dry food is affected, I'll be cooking all her food for a while.

Oops....I also emailed John at Eagle Pack,,,,well hopefully he answers one of us!
One thing though...looking at their brochure... if wheat gluten IS in fact the problem right now, Eagle Pack does not have it in their canned food!

I am getting really nervous about all of this. But I also am beginning to think that people are panicking and passing a lot of garbage around the internet.
    At least I hope so!

Dyan..I think you're right it's really hard to tell FACT from FICTION ... Something different everywhere you go posted...I want to know about Innova.. I heard they dont no if it's wheat gluten that causing problems..That said.. I will not use any can's untill this is cleared up..I have already cooked for the dogs for the week...I hope they get this sorted out Fast..
    • Gold Top Dog
Dyan, as always, my memory may be failing me, but as I recall, the Diamond recall started with just a few southern states, those in the distribution area of the affected plant.  More and more states were added and I *think* it became a national recall very shortly.  I remember sending out emails to folks I know in Ohio saying, you are probably not affected because you aren't in the distribution area, but just so you know.....

Call foods whatever you want to call them.  Doesn't matter what grade they are if they are killing dogs and cats.  Mordanna, by the way, is the one who told MOST of us about the different levels.
    • Gold Top Dog
I don't think the Diamond recall ever went national. I kept an eye on it and they never reccalled any food from sold in Iowa.

I just wanted to tell you that you may want to add calcium to balance the phosphorus in the meat; 250mg for every 3 and a half ounces of meat. You can get calcium carbonate and calcium citrate at health food stores; either one is fine. A vitamin supplement probably isn't necessary as long as this doesn't last for more than a few weeks. I saw a report this morning about a shelter in New Hampshire that lost 7 cats because of tainted food. They're asking for monetary donations so they can buy food that's not on the list.
