A few details on the recall

When you have been on a forum as long as I have been on this one, you learn that you truly catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.  If the goal is to help educate folks so that they WILL listen to what you have to say, you learn to treat others with respect.

Very well said jessies mom.  Thank you.

What I also find sad is that these are all foods purchased by pet owners who also wish to save a buck...

I don't think this is a good time to get into the reasons why people buy the foods they do. We buy cheap canned cat food. Why? Because we give it to a feral colony. They enjoy it very much. Sadly, their lives are shortened by other things than food. Yes, I'm trying to save a buck. Yes, it would be better if these cats had homes so we didn't have to care for them at all, but we would be very sad if any were to become ill from food we provided.

Our dogs eat an entirely home cooked diet, but they too are not completely safe. There have been many recalls of human products. Someday I'll hear of a recall  for something that I've put into their diet.

All of the people and pets who have been affected by these foods have my deepest sympathy.

To each his own. Trying to control how others say things, especially on the internet, is a lost battle.

And honestly, trying to control what others feed their pets through insults or poorly toned posts that at the very least IMPLY insult, especially on the internet, is a lost battle.

oooh, holy crap. I really should stay out of the Nutrition forums. That nasties are contagious.

I'm not even PMSing! I know it's weird. I guess I'm just sick of the way people, who darn well KNOW that "giving food advice" in the way they do is just rude, try to justify being canine food fascists. craaaazy.

I guess I might not have read this thread correctly, but I don't recall anyone saying, "OMG, I feed Ol' Roy and canned kibble and bits, is that a good food???" or whatever.

Maybe we're all a bit on edge with the recall?  I'm TRYING to make allowances here.....

From the article I read this morning, I didn't get that it was wet food only issue. My dog's Nature's Recipe is not on a recall list, but my cat's Authority is. If it's wet food only, then I suppose we're fine?!

If your cat is eating kibble, it's fine.  The only Authority products recalled are certain wets:
    [linkhttp://www.menufoods.com/recall/Cat/Authority.htm]http://www.menufoods.com/recall/Cat/Authority.htm[/link]

My cats also eat a mix of Authority and Science Diet (and YES I know there are "better" foods, but these foods were okayed by THREE seperate vets given my cats' current health, lifestyles, and special needs, and to date constitute the only combination of kibble that keeps them healthy, full, at their target weight, and doesn't make them barf.  If anyone thinks I'm a bad cat owner, feel free to stop by and clean up all the barf and diarrhea from other cat foods we've tried and put some $$$ in my PayPal account).

Actaully, I think you are doing the right thing rather than trying to force what others think is the best on your cats.  Two of my dogs were on Science diet, one for getting weight off and the other for a kidney infection.  The female didn't care for the r/d, but did eat and the male didn't like the k/d at all and he didn't always eat all his meal.  But in both cases it did what it was suppose to do, but I have been told I should have tried this, that or the other before using SD.  They were only on it as long as they needed to be, and if they still needed to be on it, they would, no hesitation on my part.

You know your cats, your know their needs, you know their health situation and you should do what what is needed to keep them in the best health you can. You see how your cats react to other foods, people on these forums do not.  Do what is best for you cats.

I have seen some really nasty attacks on people who feed cheaper food.

Let's just say this, I used to feed Purina One, and before that Pedigree........I didn't know any better.

I want to see all pet owners raise their hands who have been feeding only holistic foods for many years, not just 4 or 5 years, longer than that.

Education is the key, not attacking folks and calling them cheap.

I know that just the wet cans and pouches were recalled.

My concern is that the manufacturers cook this stuff up in big vats and then dry a large portion and wet the remainder for cans and pouches.

That means that the contamination could be introduced in the big vat process or later, the safe way to look at this is that the dry stuff could be tainted also.

I remember when I started buying a brand from California and was told that it was made there using human edible items. One of the companies in this recall is this manufacturer and their stuff is made by the suspect supplier.

If one of your children or friends' children died from a bad batch of Gerber food, would you still continue to feed your children other Gerber products, regardless of the facility where it came from? My dogs ARE my children, and I react to scenarios like this with no difference.

I agree. And just like one's children, our animals eat what we give them, for the most part, and like children, there is a great deal of trust involved.

I simply make food for my dogs now. My wife supports me wholeheartedly and my dogs are worth the added expense.

Snownose, my hand's up. I've been feeding corn, soy, and wheat free for thirteen years now (well, except now I feed Bil-Jac). First Nutro, then Innova/Cal Nat, then a variety of homeprepared and premium foods. But I never felt superior about it or pounded anyone for alternate food choices. I do think good nutrition is a key to good health, but everyone does what they are comfortable doing.

This thread is one of the reasons I stopped coming to this forum.  I love the information that I can get by reading everyones trial and errors.  Yes there are times that I need to "save a buck".  But the good thing is that by reading here and learning I can make an informed decision about something I can feed Jake that is still good but doesn't cost $40 a bag.  I applaud those who feed the best money can buy.  I also applaud those who feed what works best for their dogs irregardless of the constant bashing they get from others.  We all come here because we love our pets.  Glenda and the others are right  we should treat everyone here with the same compassion and understanding as we treat our dogs and cats and other loved family members.  Sorry this is the kind of post I am making after not being around for so long but I couldn't help myself

brookcove, good deal for you and your dogs.

I wish I would have seen the sign many years ago, because even when I was feeding "Harvest Baked", I could have done better.
