Purina Pro Plan and Purina Pro Plan Natural Selects?

    • Gold Top Dog
Mick did very well on the original Pro Plan- his ear infections and hot spots cleared up.  The only variety he didn't get was the chicken.  He always started looking "skanky" on chicken based foods.  I did try him on better foods- Natural Balance, Nature's Variety and Canidae, but ended up putting him back on Pro Plan (that "skanky" look w/Canidae, ear infections and hot spots again with the others).

Here is alink for purina pro plan selects sample:  [linkhttp://www.proplan.com/selects/GetPage.aspx?PageID=672]http://www.proplan.com/selects/GetPage.aspx?PageID=672[/link]  I just sent away for it to see how Sammy likes it.

I dont think I'll switch to it, since I feed Canidae right now with good results and I *might* start rotating with something, maybe kirklands, just for variety.  But I might keep it in mind depending on price for in the future. Certainly *sounds* like it would be a pretty decent food.

Oh I forgot to mention that Amy went crazy for the canned version of Pro plan, but I stopped feeding it because I noticed it had "meat by-products" on the label, not that it's necesarily bad but I like to at least know the source of what I'm feeding.  I'm now searching for a canned food I can put on top of her kibble that she'll eat.  It's weird, she's not picky about kibble but finding canned she'll eat is another story!

It does *sound* okay until you find out the price... $46.99/33 lbs [sm=eek.gif] Unreal, considering that the Selects seem pretty light on meat. Compared to Canidae at $29.99/40 lbs there's no contest. (Prices from PFD)

Have you tried evo 95% cans, or the new timberwolf organic cans? Purina just doesn't measure up to these kinds of foods.

Unless you dog/dogs do not do well on them, but do on Purina One or Selects or even Chow.  All depends on the dog as to what food measures up to what they can  handle.

that's because the extra profits go back into all the advertising, marketing, dog show sponsorhips etc etc.  Mars (Pedigree), Purina and Iams/Eukanuba are the top spenders according to a market research report, with spending in the multi millions.  Not where I want to spend my hard earned money, thank you very much.

They also do PSAs for adoption and host adoption events. Yeah, that's a bad thing to do with all that money. Some of those PSAs run a minute or more at an average of $1,000,000 per minute, depending on the season and time-slot. That's not including the cost of film production, actors, pet wranglers, etc. That's just the cost of airing the spot. Bad giants, bad giants.[:)]

Very true.... I buy my Canidae from a pet store and it's about $36/40 lbs - I don't really want to pay shipping from online so I buy from a local store since they support  the community and are very nice and helpful!

Selects would be about $15 more.... hmmmm.... yeah, no contest.  Sammy has been doing just great on Canidae - softer coat, firmer stools, etc.  He might do even better on something else, but we're both happy for now!

What have you tried?  I have a dog that eats anything, kibble or canned, but I've tried and liked CS canned - many nice fruits and veggies even if they are by Diamond; Nutro max was fairly decent, Kirklands canned is good, and we tried a can of canidae but its a bit more pricey so I try to stick with a cheaper canned since I only add it occassionally.

Thank you to those who did stay on topic.

I have tried Nutro, Authority, Eukanuba and Nature's Recipe and she'll lick it a little bit and then walk away.  I'll see if I can find the Chicken Soup or another poster suggested Evo 95% meats.  Thanks for the advice, so glad I found this forum!

The One and Pro Plan sensitive formulas are nearly identical.  If I'm not mistaken, One uses corn gluten meal and the fish meal is after the animal fat.  Pro Plan's version excludes corn gluten meal, adding canola meal (???) and moving the fish meal before the animal fat.  Also of note, neither one uses by-products, wheat or soybeans.  I'm going on memory, because I compared them months ago.  For the price margin, I don't see a reason to go the Pro Plan route, even with the "horrible" corn gluten meal.

I've not compared or paid attention to the other One/Pro Plan products, so there may be a justification in price margin with them.

Actually they both contain poutry by product and animal digest.  Wow, I just looked at the difference between Pro Plan Sensitive and Purina One Sensitive. There is not much difference.  One more grain, pearled barely, in the Purina One.

According to their  sales rep that I occasionally work with .   There are very few differences between One and Pro Plan.  Alot of marketing.  There are some difference, but not much.

But what about the 4th ingredient which clearly states poultry byproduct meal.
