Purina Pro Plan and Purina Pro Plan Natural Selects?

We just switched from Eagle Pack today. I actually tried to buy some ProPlan weight management formula this morning but they did not have it in stock. So I bought the Purina One Weight Management. I fed it to my girls this morning. They loved it, which was great because they have refused some kibble in the past. They both had normal stools today, so it seems to have agreed with them.

Now, just because I like Pro Plan, doesn't mean I like it more than Eagle Pack.  Eagle Pack is a much better food, ingredient wise.  They may like it better but it certainly is not healthier for them.

If I remember correctly, your little guy has digestive problems. In that case I would try the original Pro Plan, not the selects, because the formula is more simple. You may even want to try their sensitive stomach formula which is Salmon and Oatmeal

I once thought about trying this for Jessie because I've heard that allergy dogs do well on it, but I was concerned about the animal digest since she's allergic to chicken, so I e-mailed the company and there is chicken in the animal digest; just wanted to let you know in case that's a problem.

I have a friend, one of those breeders/show people you mention, who used to feed Proplan mostly because it's pushed so heavily at conformation shows. Her dogs looked fine, acted fine, except of course for the gigantic proplan poops. She switched without telling us to a premium brand, I forget which- solid gold, maybe, or eaglepack, and when she showed up at the club a month later everyone was shocked by, and commenting on, how much BETTER the dog looked, and acted. Nervous hyper energy turned into focused energy. Coat glowing. This dog had been "fine" by anyones standard before the switch, and it was a blinded study, none of us knew the food had been changed. But after the switch it was apparent the dog hadn't been fine.

Thanks for pointing that out  JoJo, Actually I should clarify I  like Eagle Pack too. I think its a very good food. But both of my girls have gained too much weight on it. They get 3/4 cup a day. I cut it to even less than that, for about a month. But honestly they just do not seem satisified with such a small amount. They both finish their meals in less then a minute and stare and bark at their bowls like they want more.

On the reduced weight Purina they can have 1 cup a day for weight reduction. I also use part of their daily kibble ration for training/ treats. Thats the reason I switched, I dont think they are satisfied with just under 3/4 cup a day, and it sure does not leave a lot to use for training with either. They are both small dogs and tend to gain weight easily. So in my case I prefer to be able to feed them more.

We go for 2 walks a day. They go to my Fathers house with me everyday (he had a stroke so we spend a lot of time there). Anyway he has a huge yard with lots of trees and bushes, squirells, rabbits, and lots of fun critters to chase. We invite the neighbor dogs over and they play together for hours. I also take them to the park  3-4 times a week. So I know its not lack of exercise. I am hoping they will do better on the weight management food.

Rose did fairly well on the sensitive skin formula.  She doesn't have a great coat, but it didn't do too bad on it.  There was a slight improvement.  The only problem was that she didn't like it too much.  Shes not usually picky, but it definitely wasn't her favorite.

I have always used Purina One or Pro Plan. My dogs look great and feel great. My mom had her Akita on it and due to her(my mom) having health reasons she had to give it back to the breeders and they put the dog on something, not sure what but the last i saw the dog, it looked awful.I love the stuff and will always feed it. I must say that we are now mixing chicken soup for the dog lovers soul in with it, only for change.

there's nothing edible or nutritious in there. Your dogs may lose weight, but at a serious blow to their long-term health-- being skinny due to malnutrition is not a healthy state. I can't believe people buy this garbage.
Far better to bulk up a meal of a good kibble with green beans or something.

I have used a few of there different formula's, if you don't have allergy issues, I would recommend the Select, it gave me the best results, and I know a few other people who are Pro Plan feeders and they really like the results they are getting from the Select.

Oh I forgot to mention , they were giving away a free sample, a pretty good sized bag of the Selects on the Pro Plan site, not sure if they still are or not.

Sensible Choice is low in calories and isn't a super concentrated formula, which means you will feed more of it.

Chicken Soup is also lower in calories and also isn't super concentrated.

The One and Pro Plan sensitive formulas are nearly identical.  If I'm not mistaken, One uses corn gluten meal and the fish meal is after the animal fat.  Pro Plan's version excludes corn gluten meal, adding canola meal (???) and moving the fish meal before the animal fat.  Also of note, neither one uses by-products, wheat or soybeans.  I'm going on memory, because I compared them months ago.  For the price margin, I don't see a reason to go the Pro Plan route, even with the "horrible" corn gluten meal.

I've not compared or paid attention to the other One/Pro Plan products, so there may be a justification in price margin with them.

That's because an AOE can't resist. And she probably thinks she's cheeky because she didn't mention the formulas from the OP, even though the OP specifically ask this to be a non-bashing thread as far as the brand goes. And it kind of stymies others here, which does seem unfair. If we render an opinion of the AOE for stating her opinion, then we're getting personal, possibly violating posting ethics, etc. It is sometimes the perfect set-up for an forum bully.

Notice how I haven't said anything specifically about the AOE (Authority on Everything.)

How did Purina Fit n Trim get into this discussion????? The OP was asking about Pro Plan. Two completely different foods.

My parents have fed Pro Plan the whole time they've owned their dogs because that's what the breeder always fed. They have had no problems, their dogs have always been healthy. Possibly they would do better on something else, but my parents don't really have any interest to mess with something that's working for them.

I recently tried the Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach/Skin formula for my dog - typical for her, she hated it. I tried the canned, and she wouldn't even touch it. My cat loved it, of course, since it's salmon!
