it might be much more useful to speak out loudly against those prominent members of the black community who pretty much said "He didn't know any better, it's part of the culture

    Alrighty...wading in again...

Why should I speak out for or against, any of them? Do you take personal responsibility for the idiot statements of Mel Gibson? Did you feel a need to publicly say "hey...even tho Mel's white...he doesn't speak for me, I like Jewish people"?? I don't get it...why do "we" need to speak out? Why can't YOU (general) just assume those views were those of the individual people stating them?

Again...the myth of the "uni-mind", in order to not be grouped together...the burden is on me to "speak out" and say otherwise? *eyeroll*

ETA: BTW who decided they were "prominent", and who are they "prominent", to? Was there a vote? I didn't get a ballot?

There were a LOT of white people speaking out against Mel Gibson--MANY.  I have listened to pretty much everything that I could regarding the Vick thing and I did not hear the same outcry from the black community.  I didn't hear any white people (or people of any color for that matter) come out and say, "Oh, Mel Gibson just didn't know any better--those opinions are just part of the culture he comes from."

I don't believe that dog fighting is a black/white thing--the best known dog fighting family in this area is white.  However, what impression do you think the general public gets when well known members of the black community, one after the other, come out and state that Vick just didn't know any better because it's a cultural thing?

ETA:  Jerry Falwell and the Pope do not speak for me as a Christian, but many, many people see them as voices of Christianity simply because they are well known Christian public figures.  Whether we like it or not, that's how it works these days.

I guess that would depend on what the person listening wants to get? Confirmation of what they already think about said black community...or a reason to dismiss those people as idiots and realize that they speak only for themselves....the onus is on the listener to take what they will from commentary...in my case I take their views as that...their views...and I have my own...and that may be the same different or a little of both.

No one speaks for me...and I don't have  a "community" outside the human one...so perhaps that's why I have a hard time seeing why Whoopi and some basketball player and some wannabe Reverend, are "prominent members of my community"? To me they are just people, talking out their butts and sharing thier opinions.

I completely agree with you.  However, the unfortunate reality is that I don't think that this is how most people see things.

Not knowing most people...I will have to say "I couldn't concur with, nor deny that"... Wink

How's that for diplomatic (or evasive...same thing sometimes eh?) hehe...

Um, what about Al Sharpton and Russell Simmons among many other prominent black figures who have come out publically against Vick? Including an open letter to his corporate sponsors. Why do Whoppi Goldberg's comments get more play? The OP's comments anger me, as do people just assuming the black community is all pro-Vick.

Yes  I could not have said this better.  It boggles my mind that Whoopi and Jamie Foxx, are considered able to speak for me, just because of the color of their skin.  I feel no need to have to credit or discredit anything that they say.

It is the nature of prejudice; the perpetrator denies the victim his humanity. Specific to this example, the OP would no more assume that somebody like David Duke speaks for her just because they are both white, but cannot credit black people with the same ability. That's how 'us vs them' works unfortunately.

I find it very sad that the horrible crimes against animals committed by this "man" has so many of us turned against one another.

I agree with Glenda......let's leave the color out of it, and just agree that Vick is a sorry piece of you know what, who, BTW......violated the conditions of the court.......and was busted smoking his funny stuff.......how much more retarded can he get?

What's really interesting is that I am not the type to insert color into a question. My skin color influences my life no more than my eye color. But despite my intentions, others insert color into it.

    Just thought I'd say that.

I am happy to do that personally.

That joint thing made me laugh actually...because given all his troubles, I bet a toke just hit the spot..lol. He'd have been better of with Rescue Remedy tho... Wink

I guess for me in the animal abuse issue, color should have never been a factor, I tell you why......I became a veggie years ago because of horrible animal abuse that is taken place....I did my research, and I have to say whites are not out of the loop when it comes to abuse, they are in there with the best of them.......

I came in late for this conversation, thank God.  You are right Paula, I took offense to the way Little Miss worded her 'complaint'. So I had to decide if I was going to reply or just leave it alone. There is a great deal of racism in this country on every side of the issue. There are racist of every color creed and religion all over the world. Lets face it with compassion and forgiveness (for they know not what they do) I don't care what color you are, a crime is a crime and everyone should be punished to the same degree for those crimes. that would be a perfect world wouldn't it!  Lets just hope he gets what he deserves and what any other man would get.And even if it doesn't work that way, you and I both know in the end, (the very end) we all are going to have to attone for our sins no matter what color our skin is or how we were raised!!!!  The wonderful thing about us Humans is that we all can speak for ourselves....we don't need anyone to speak for us.....the dogs that are hurt by all of this......someone should speak for them...Crying
