    URGENT MESSAGE! PLEASE READ THIS!

I deleted my post, as I don't want to break out a fight between anyone.

Trying to ban books, any books, is almost as bad as trying to ban breeds, IMO.

Amazon sells probably millions of different products, I seriously doubt having a few about dog fighting means they support it, any more than selling Rush Limbaugh's books means they agree with everything out of his mouth.

I will never, ever support book banning or censorship.  NEVER.
    • Gold Top Dog
Sorry, I won't support this as it goes completely against one of the freedoms guaranteed by the US Constitution: Right to free speech.

I would rather have 100,000 individuals assembled lawfully and openly discussing things I completely disagree with than to have 100 meeting in back alleys and spreading their message through violent acts and vandalism.  I will NEVER support any movement that seeks to restrict, ban, censor or otherwise eliminate, or dilute books, magazines, printed materials, or other broadcasts.  As much as I might despise what they advocate, I will gladly give my life so that they might advocate it.

I despise book banning.  Won't ever support it.  I also think dog fighting is awful and those who participate should be punished to the full extent of the law.
And as a side note, on that list of books and dvds you linked, one of the dvds is a documentary showing how horrendous dog fighting is and a couple are fiction.  Of the books, one was published in 1888 and another tells how to prevent dog fights.

Those of you who don't care that Amazon is selling these books, are you telling me, that if you had a website, that you'd support the sale of books for dog fighting on your website. No one is saying to ban the person from writing the books, all they are saying is ask Amazon to not support the sale of this type of book on their website. I'm sure there are plenty of websites that won't. We've all gotten together before to stop sites from selling live pets. That's all we want to do, is ask Amazon to not sell books of this Nature. Let them take their wares elswhere...if anyone else will take them.

My mother was a librarian, and I was raised with the belief that information should be made available, no matter how distasteful.  And don't kid yourself - you are attempting censorship through market pressure.  Live animals are in no way similar to books.

Where did any of the posters even hint at that?  I think you're on the wrong track here.

Censorship is censorship, no matter if it's market driven or culturally driven.  The best way for these books to cease to exist (except for Ian Dunbar's book) is to educate those who would potentially buy these books.  That's a more logical approach than crying "foul," don't you think?

Ok, did anyone actually read summaries of these books? They do not sound like PRO-dogfighting to me

    Example:

Off The Chain: At the turn of the century, the pit-bull was America's favorite pet. How did it go from Pete in the Little Rascals to public enemy number 1. This documentary is an undercover look at the world of dog fighting and how its damaged the breed. Its not bad dogs, its bad owners.

Bloodline: Watch for yourself the public opinion of the people that hat and love the American pitbull. Does the American pitbull get a bad rap? Are they bad dogs or do people use them the wrong way. Learn from the experts why the beast of choice remains the pit bull. Favored by trainers for its loyalty, gameness and ability to keep fighting through extreme pain and exhaustion learn how this dog has been bred for many generations to be dangerously aggressive but good dogs towards humans.

And the ones that are about how to fight are being sold because they are rare books - one was originally published in 1888.  It's like people who buy Mein Kamph - not to support it, but because it is a piece of history and they want to read it.

When I was in High School Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird were on the banned list.  When my kids were in JUNIOR high, they read those books as class assignments.  Censorship leads to skyrocketing sales in many cases.  When "the people" raised a ruckus about the "X rated" porn places, attendance doubled and tripled...and trust me, what they called PORN in those days was no where near as bad as we see on TV today.  Think Dennis Franz's fanny.  And no, this isn't totally OT.....forbidding something tends to make it more desireable.  Whether it is a book, a movie or a website where purchases are made.  I'm not sure that they would even notice anyway.

Wait a minute Glenmar, you are from my era and I read those two books in high school.

I will use my consumer buying power and not buy any of those books.  Here is thread on the same subject that was discussed in June.

Different strokes for different school districts David!  I grew up in a lily white, puritanical town.  I WANTED those books and I would have bought them but no one would SELL them to me!  The more they wouldn't the more I wanted them.  They were practically banned in our town.

And again, I'm really not sure if the vendor would even notice the drop in business, or care.

I'm inclined to agree.  After all, if people get to see those videos, or read those books, and they have any level of decency, their new found knowledge might just propel them to take up the cause of seeing that dogfighting is stopped.  Banning "The Joy of Sex" will never stop people from "doing it", and banning these books will not stop dogfightin.  Only getting the message out in the open about how disgusting a practice this is will do that.  Maybe we should force feed a few of those videos to the people who think Michael Vick should still be playing in the NFL. Amen to that, brother. [;)]  It's called the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, first article of the Bill of Rights.  There's a reason it's there.  If we ban one book, no matter how distasteful, it leads to more and more censorship, until there is no learning going on, and no freedom...

    4.

THIS looks like a support dog fighting book to me.  Might be interesting to read what has changed over the years but it still looks like a support book to me.
I disagree with you guys. There is no book in the world that is that important that it has to be sold. Sorry.
If they were selling books teaching how to make bombs...how to poison people...how to kill dogs....would you defend them because they are books and everyone has the right to read books?
Not me...those books are not worth it.   And as Maureen said...we are asking Amazon to not support Dog Fighting by selling these books.  I wrote a letter to them a week ago stating just that.  I don't support Dog Fighting in any way, shape or form...and would think my dog friends would feel the same.
