A responsible breeder doesn't breed unless they have a dog that is a good example of the breed standard.  Miniaturizing dogs from breeds developed hundreds of years ago is not ethical according to most experienced dog owners.   Why would you want to breed a dog that doesn't conform to the breed standard?

Like I said ,The beagle has been rec by akc with now 3 standards.Poodles there are giant standared ,tea cup.I do not agree with down sizing to nothing. That is just wrong. My dogs are 7 to 10 lbs.and just today someone called on how beautiful and how well it is growing .my dpups do not go till vet checked,10 weeks old and papers signed w/tsp of spay or neuter.I check after 5 months to check.Thank you for your comment.

Poodles are NOT giant, standard, teacup. They are Standard, Miniature, and Toy. There is no such thing as a "teacup" from any reputable breeder around.

Breeding a bitch from untested stock is unethical, PERIOD.

Not to defend anyone but most toy breeds were developed from larger breeds for the purpose of being pets and there is nothing wrong with that. There is also nothing unethical about wanting to develop a new breed. As for breeding only dogs that conform to the standard, no dog meets the standard perfectly. My boy dog carries his tail too high, my oldest girl's eyes are too light, their daughter moves close int he rear and the puppy is missing a premolar. All of those things are faults according to the breed standard. In some breeds there are also cosmetic DQs in the standards that were put in place due to nothing more than dog show politics. Not to mention some breeds have different standards in different countries, one could be breeding in accordance to one standard but have dogs which don't fit into another.

you would defend any breeder anytime, anywhere in furtherance of your belief that anything less is furthering the AR agenda.

Well I will defend people's right to breed dogs for sure. I don't think breeding dogs should make one a criminal, even if I disagree with the breeder's choices. I don't think it is acceptable in America for people to be made into criminals for choosing to keep intact dogs or for choosing to breed dogs or for having over X number of pets or for choosing to own X breed of dog.

Petland in Arlington, Texas is boycotted every Satuday from 10:30 AM until noon. A lot of us bought puppies there that turned out to be sick and have congenital defects. The owner refuses to refund the money to these poor people; some of which have children who fall in love with any puppy that comes home with Mom and Dad. The illnesse sometimes don"t show up immediately.

You obviously are not well informed about the reason some of us want puppymills closed down. It's not that we hate it that people sell puppies. We just hate where most of these puppies come from. A puppy mill is a puppymill is a puppie mill! We are not talking here about everybody in the country losing their priviledge to have a few puppies a year and sell them from their home where the puppies are healthy and not suffering.

We ARE talking about the puppies who are just a commodity to a person with a puppymill as a full time job. The puppy mills we are talking about are filthy flea and tick infested pens stacked three high in the heat or cold outside. These puppies have to start their lives in these circumstances. They live in their own *** and urine and the same things dwindle down to the bottom cages as well. There is no proper floor because the owners don't want to have to clean them. The puppies are given a little food and water but aren't cleaned up until the owner sells them to a large conglomerate who washes them perfumes and delouses them and brushes out the filth in their fur.

Then the puppies are sold to stores and fluffed up. This is a sickening thing and anyone with an IQ above 40 would be shocked to actually see a puppymill. Yes, I really do hate puppy mills but not home breeders who take care of their animals and sell them to responsible people. We are not trying to take away the civil rights of Americans, just to close huge nasty puppymills.

And what exactly makes one a puppy mill in your eyes?

What number of puppies is acceptable to have in a year to sell? What if one develops a helath problem?

I think that everyone but the people doing such things find this sort of care unacceptable, which is why we alreday have laws protecting aniamls from such treatment.

What restrictions do you feel are acceptable to place on breeders that won't affect what "home breeders" are doing?

Why not just boycott the store?  Indifferent

Shrug.  I always boycotted any shop that sold puppies or kittens.  Lots of people did.  Now, I don't know a single shop that sells them.  Might be some somewhere that might, but they are few and far between.  No laws about it, but no one buys puppies from pets shops.  Just got to get people to stop buying from brokers, dealers, "just one litter" breeders and vet their chosen breeders carefully.

Lies is right IMO, it's about demand, not supply.  Stop buying from them, they'll stop doing it.  More laws are not the answer.  More education IS.

You have dog from unsound stock, and you are going to breed her?  Any motive for this bizarre and unwise course of cation, other than money?

I think I am going to be sick.

Maybe the person means that they picket the store? Boycotting it for a few hours every week certainly seems a bit...useless.

We have one puppy selling store here and a Petsmarta nd Pet Supplies Plus both within 5-10 minutes of it. I doubt that the puppy selling store does much business beyond selling puppies, as their stuff is super overpriced compared to the other places especially PSP. I think it may be on it's way out anyway - it was a Petland and is now Harbor Pets. There used to be many several other puppy selling stores, including one in both local malls that have all gone out of business over the past 10 years.

I think the bigger growing concern about buying pups is not the pet stores - as they are truly fading out - but the mass number of places ONLINE that you can purchase your new puppy, and have it delivered right to your door step. America (especially) is very lazy, but with one click - a new pet.

Now, you can't always trust going into someones home. Our 'mill breeder' allowed purchasers into her home. Just the front half - where the adults were not kept. The smell was faint, according to former purchasers. The puppies were set up in a little pen, with blankets, toys, etc. Meanwhile - the parents were back factory farming her more and more puppies. What you see, is never what you get.
