Fast forward a few days, and the water from my shower head won't shut off. First it's dripping, and within two days it's pouring out continuously, so I call a plumber. I called a big name plumbing company, which turned out to be a mistake. The guy fixed the leaky shower, 30 minutes and a small part, and the bill was nearly $400...ok, I thought that was bad...but here's the kicker. There is an underlying problem that he neither fixed nor even found. I discovered the problem by talking to neighbors who had similar issues, and got the guy back out here...I refused to pay anything more, but I wanted him to tell me if the problem was what I thought it was...and it was...and he tried to get DH to give him $20. The estimate to fix the real problem was $450. I called around and have a guy coming out to do it for $225.
Oooooooh that sort of thing makes me SO mad!
I had a very similar thing happen to me with my house in CA - a mysterious water-caused hole appeared in the drywall in the ceiling in my downstairs bathroom. Big-name plumbing company (sent out by my homeowner's insurance company, no less) says it's a toilet, will cost $400, so I have him fix it and he changes out the sealing ring for the upstairs toilet. Problem solved, right? WRONG! Not only did he simply replace the sealing ring OVER completely rotten things around it, but he didn't even look at the pipes - turns out the pipes UNDERNEATH the toilet were the real problem. Cost well over $500 to get the real problem fixed, since it required un-doing and re-doing the work he did, plus replacing all those pipes. Soooooooo mad.
Sorry you were taken for a ride by that jerk plumber
I hope you get it resolved quickly, and you get your money back.
Amanda, that's exciting about your new place!
Tina, Agnes sounds so happy, and I'm so happy for her :) And great news about your son! How many times are you going to say "I told you so"? Started practicing yet?
Thanks again to everyone who wished me well for the GREs. I was convinced I totally bombed the math part - I was literally in tears afterwards - and I almost canceled my score. (You have to decide whether or not to keep the score before you can see what you got.) I decided to go for it anyway, and - I did awesome!!!! So surprised! My score at least puts me in shooting range of the top schools, so I'm quite relieved. BF aced the GREs and is definitely applying to top schools, so my score means there's a much better chance we might end up near/with each other. Phew! Plus it'd be nice if I could get into a top program, just for my own successes! So fingers crossed, now all that's left is the app process :)
