Eating Poop

    Eating Poop

Forgive the heading of this thread, but I'm really alarmed by what I just witnessed a few minutes ago.  There is obviously a connection between having company over and Reesee pooping on my carpet, as she confirmed this tonight in my living room.  The worst part is that she ate it!  Before I could even get up to clean it up she scarfed it down.  This can't be healthy!  [:o]

I would have crated her before company arrived, but she is nursing the pups right now and the crate we have is not big enough for that.  Please tell me she isn't going to have to go to the vet for eating the poop.  Is it going to make her sick?

Take a deep breath and relax!  This isn't abnormal....gross...but not abnormal.  She's the one cleaning up the puppy poop....she might have decided she likes the taste of it.

I've inhaled and exhaled...thanks.  Didn't mean to spazz.  I didn't even think of that.  It happened so quickly.

Sometimes I think they're trying to find a way to make sure that company doesn't come back. [:D]

Thank you Joyce!  I needed that laugh.  And you are probably very right because when company's over, my full attention is not on her.

Hehe at least you didn't have to pick it up... LOL

I found that when Pint had her pups we had to watch her really closely for signs that she wanted out.  Especially since she wouldn't leave the pups till she couldn't hold it anymore.

BTW my dogs eat poop all the time.  Well not all the time, mostly in winter.  And neither has ever become sick from it.  Its gross but...

"Coprophagia" is the term for stool eating. It happens a lot for various reasons!   It is gross to us, but not to them.  Ick!

ahhhhhhhh... so does this give a whole new meaning to the phrase, doggie breath?

i have one that is related, although not doggie poopwise:

    northridge earthquake, 1994...

so the earthquake hit early in the morning while it was dark. we were about 6 miles from the epicenter and we lost power as well as water. our gas, however, remained functional (i forst checked for leaks).... so our neighbor who had turned his gas off offered to cook us dinner on our gas stove for helping with the neighborhood cleanup tasks (no fun)

anyway, the first night, i got indigestion and had to go - ahhh, but no toilet was functional. since it was dark, i just went out along the back 40 fence and pooped there just like i do when backpacking (but unable to dig a hole cuz it was dark) and figured i would just bury it the next morning.

so along comes the next morning and........ it was gone.
hmmmmmm, oh well... thought no more of it....

until that evening when my wife said to our male aussie, buster, as she caught a whiff of buster's breath... "geeez, your breath smells like........"

then my light clicked on.; "so that's where it went."

Out of my 4 my peekapoo Taffy is my pooeater and she doesn't just like hers she likes the others and she prefers it warm.[:'(] She's just over 2yrs. and has done it since we've had her.

I've tried the Tobasco thing and the Forbid for over 2mths. but neither worked. The only thing that works at all is if you can get right to it and pick it up. She's never gotten sick from eating it but as soon as I see her do it we got straight to the sink and brush her teeth and mouth out. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww I know but some just do it.

I love this thread. I am laughing MAO!  I especially liked Lostcoyote's story where his dog cleaned up after him.  Yoshi is an A #1 poop snacker. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find him one day hanging out under Milo's butt with his mouth open.

Eating the poop of other dogs/animals can spread worms.  Eating the poop of horses can poison dogs if the horses have just been de-wormed.

Some people find that going to a grain-free food stops poop eating.  Dogs don't digest grain well, so there is a lot of it still in their stool and that makes the stool still smell like food - to the dogs anyway.

Well Yoshi's dodged that bullet in his 7 years. I guess HeartGuard plus has some efficacy against some parasites.
