Eating Poop

You want to talk about eating poop?

While my son was potty training, very recently, he pooped on the kitchen floor.  When I told him to show me where it was, there was my dog, licking his chops, and no kid poop to be seen for miles.

Yeah.  The horror.  Oh, the horror.

Edit to add: haha, just saw lost coyote's post.  Oh, the horror.

My 1 year old Shih tzu, Layla, is paper trained and normally poops right after breakfast, so I know to watch for it, but sometimes I'm not right there - I'll come around the corner and there are telltale signs that she went and obviously IT went right down the hatch!!!!!! The other day I happened to be there and she had just gone.......I went to reach for the clean up stuff and in the split second that I turned my head she gobbled up a chunk of it - I was mortified......I had never actually seen her eat it!!! GROSS!!!!!!! Then she wants to give "puppy kisses!!!!" I will never understand why she does it, but she's never gotten sick from it - I just wish she would stop!!

All of mine for about 3yrs. now have been on grain free foods. It doesn't help, at least not us. I have been to the vet. about Taffy 'cause I too was worried about her getting sick. So far thankfully she hasn't gotten sick from it and she's never had worms. I just get to it as soon as I notice it. It is a gross habit.[:'(]

    ewwwwwwwwwww!  [:'(][:'(]

I'm officially tagging this thread to read before meals - it may help with my portion control.

Did anyone think, 15 years ago, that we would be discussing the poop eating habits of our dogs over the internet?  The only poop that my dogs eat is the cat litter - talk about tooth brushing time!!!

It's good to know I'm not alone in this.  I mean, my kids had "finger painting incidents" when they were younger.  But the whole doggy poopy snacking thing was a little more than I could handle.  Grodie to the max is right!

of course, for everyone who's had a puppy...

one should not forget to include the all-to-common step-in-the-puppy-poo-in-the-middle-of-the-night

(even tho this thread is about eating it, why not include stepping in it too as an off-topic??)

nothing better than that squishy feeling between your toes right before you realize what it is you just stepped in - and then you head on down to the bathroom walking on one foot and one heel.

my technique is to stick my foot in the toilet (don't worry, it's been flushed so it's cleaner than my foot) and swish it around and use toilet paper to clean it off.... then turn on the shower for a final rinse with plenty of soap.

then it's back to bed i go [:D]

Recycling is almost a Beagle 'breed trait' many, MANY do it. Many theories as to why...but diet is ruled out by sheer virtue of numbers lol.

There are stories of fat Beagles on diet's that GAIN weight and their owners have no idea why...and it's because they're eating their housemates doo! Bitches do it...dogs it...less but they do do it. Some have favorite kennelmates and ignore others...most ignore their own in favor of someone elses, lol.

    Now what can you do?
    • Alfalfa/rabbit food ;pellets in their food helps some
    • Crushed pineapple in the food, ditto
    • Adolph's meat tenderizer, ditto
    • Solid Gold S.E.P. added to the food (this is what I did back when I cared LOL)

The only sure fire method is picking it up. [;)] It's a habit and once engrained it takes a long time to break, then they fall off the wagon...with luck being what it is they will probably fall off at the dog park right out in front of everyone...lmbo.

Yup, this is very gross to us but it appears as though it is very normal dog behavior.... for some dogs anyway.....  I have one who is so bad about it, that he tries to grab it out of the other dogs before it even hits the ground. It's gotten so now they won't even try to go when he is around. I have to let them get their duty done before I can let him out to play in the yard.

now this is all real interesting because none of our dogs (with that 1 story exception afterthe earthquake) eat each others poop. sniff, yes, but eat, no... at least i've never seen it happen. licking up pee (by the males) is a different story.

do ya think it's the dry food we feed them?
    • Gold Top Dog
I didnt think it was "natural" for dogs to eat their own or another of their own species poop??Common...yes,natural/normal...no. The only exception is mothers cleaning up after their pups.

Carnivores eating herbivores poop i have heard is "normal",but not eating their own...

do ya think it's the dry food we feed them?

Wouldnt surprise me at all. Although i have never had a poop eater, except for duck, goose droppings on the odd occasion. My dogs have never given the kitty litter nuggets or their own or other dogs poop a second glance.

Like I said...numbers rule out the diet issue in Beagles. Raw fed's do it...kibble feds do it...wet fed do it. It is a Beagle thing. It is also very very common in some other breeds. So sorry...not as simple as diet, if only it were! lol.

The worst part is that she ate it!

ahhhhhhhh... so does this give a whole new meaning to the phrase, doggie breath?

i have one that is related, although not doggie poopwise:

    northridge earthquake, 1994...

so the earthquake hit early in the morning while it was dark. we were about 6 miles from the epicenter and we lost power as well as water. our gas, however, remained functional (i forst checked for leaks).... so our neighbor who had turned his gas off offered to cook us dinner on our gas stove for helping with the neighborhood cleanup tasks (no fun)

anyway, the first night, i got indigestion and had to go - ahhh, but no toilet was functional. since it was dark, i just went out along the back 40 fence and pooped there just like i do when backpacking (but unable to dig a hole cuz it was dark) and figured i would just bury it the next morning.

so along comes the next morning and........ it was gone.
hmmmmmm, oh well... thought no more of it....

until that evening when my wife said to our male aussie, buster, as she caught a whiff of buster's breath... "geeez, your breath smells like........"

then my light clicked on.; "so that's where it went."

After reading this and the double whammy poopy puke comment, I didn't know if I wanted to laugh or cry!!![sm=vomit03.gif]

Oh come on now, you haven't lived until your puppy has thrown up your other dogs poop all over your car seat, shifter, passenger side floor, space between the seat and the shifter, and THEN tried to what he's just thrown up.....[:'(]

It is as natural as their sniffing and licking body parts. It serves a number of purposes and sometimes it's just fun. It may not be an acceptable practice to humans, but there is nothing un-natural about poop snacking dogs.

I have a question. I am fostering a momma dog and her 3 pups. I know it is normal for momma to eat her pups poop but is is normal for one pup the eat the poop of it's sibling? I'm sitting here watching the pups and this is what I witnessed.
