rw-my Momma Wren and her nest

WOW those are fantastic pictures.  What odd little creatures...  Their feather growth almost looks like porcupine quills in the last pic there (and t-rex teeth in the ones from the previous post!).  What does the mother do when you handle the chicks or do you make sure she's far away before doing so?

I love the spines on the back of the neck, so dinosaurian LOL!

I can't imagine what that afro is good for (in an evolutionary sense)...why not just hatch completely bald??  All signs clearly point to the importance of a fashion statement.

Oh in the post before this one I kinda go over their mom/dad's behavior and such. They're nice little birds.

The afro is definitely a fashion statement LOL. It was the only decoration they had, right from birth LOL. Maybe down triggers parental instinct...like rounded faces, soft skin and small size triggers that in humans?

The latest pics are my favourites so far!

But I am worried because a danged CAT has taken up residence in our front yard....

Let the dogs out whenever the cat turns up? Tongue Tied

LOL...so my dogs can lick it? Teehee. I've been PSST'ing at it and chasing it off....hopefully it will decide to lay around elsewhere if I do that consistently. Might have to break out the hose otherwise.

I thnk I heard mothballs deter cats but I don't want anything killing bugs around the nest site since that is what they feed the chicks...*sigh*

I dood it! My kiddo caught a tiny grasshopper today and I gave it to one of the babies LMBO...so cute....it was like a little Venus Flytrap in hyperdrive! aww...

I won't do it again I promise...but...it was really cool. And yes, they do eat grasshoppers...lol.

Almost ready to leave their nest...end of this week I bet!

Look how interesting their feather development is in these pics...I am glad I was able to get such close up shots...my hand got pooped on but it was worth it...lol.

Momma was watching from the bush next door and brought him a feed after I went in...lol.

They are really developing fast now.  The feathers look so cool.  Wonder if mama and papa bird will make their nest in your plant next year.  They may lay the eggs and leave you a note of instructions and head off to the beach.  lol

Jackie, LOL!  What was that Dr. Seuss story where the bird left her eggs for someone else?  Was that Horton the elephant?

Gina, awesome pics!  You da' woman.

A cold spray full stream from your hose will deter the cat.  Devil

My babies are LEAVING. I am SO sad. I am NOT ready. There are only 3 of the five in the nest now and two of those I put BACK in when they were fluttering so helplessly on the ground so close to dark.

I cannot help them anymore and I am just sick about it...they'll probably all be gone by tomorrow...or in that stupid cat's belly. *sob*

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh dear, I hope the cat doesn't get them.  Get the water hose handy.

    • Gold Top Dog

Put a big crate over them and just leave a little place for the momma to get in....then that dumb ol cat won't be able to get in dere an eat our babies!
