rw-my Momma Wren and her nest

No pics of Momma Wren yet. She is VERY scared of my camera. I can stare her in the eye from very close all day and she won't move off the nest. But the big flashy box comes out and she FLEES for her life LOL.

BUT! here is the now complete clutch of eggs...5 in all, very pretty. I am sparingly watering my plant...and she doesn't seem to mind. She's been earnestly sitting on them for about 4 days now...so about 10 days til they hatch. Before she wasn't so much sitting as laying one then flying off.

I'll bump this thread from time to time to update for those interested in the babies and how they develop. I intend to brave the inevitable dive bombing to watch them grow and get pics!

The eggs are so pretty!  Can't wait to watch them hatch and grow.  I wonder if Mama bird rethinks her nest site next year but I've seen birds build nests in less than ideal spots, year after year.  Bird brained.  lol

yes in looking up what she was I saw plenty of Carolina Wren nests in some CRAY-ZAY places. Like a boot left in the garage...and the wierdest was in a BATHROOM...inside a house...where they had a window cracked open! they used the bathroom all the way thru but you had to dodge dive bombing parent birds while you were doing yer business LOL.

finally, a couple shots of Momma bird. She is cheeky looking lol.

Scolding me from our front Oak.

Perching on the garden ornament right outside her nestplant...teh brown thing to the left is actually the side of the pot her nest is in.

I visited a friend one time to discover some idiot dove had gathered half a dozen sticks, tossed them haphazardly together on top of a pair of flip flops on an old freezer in the carport, and laid some eggs. I wouldn't say in the nest as it didn't really have an in, just kind of amongst the sticks. It was exceedingly ridiculous, and they had to keep warning people not to brush the sticks off. I seem to remember that the nest failed. I think the doves got upset by all the traffic by the 'nest' and abandoned it in favour of building another one inside an empty ice cream container on the ground in the laundry. Doves are not the brightest creatures, but that pair were particularly challenged.

I was often interested to see how young fairy-wrens tackled their first year of nesting. First nests usually failed, but they would refine their technique and usually got better as the season progressed. Nothing made me happier than seeing my heroic first year in the predator-ridden back territory finally get a brood of four to fledging at the end of the season and then sensibly kept them all in a bramble bush for the first week they were out. She is probably doing very well these days, but some birds never got the hang of it and continued to build ridiculous nests their whole lives. I knew one bird that built amazing nests, but as soon as the young fledged she'd take them for an epic journey all around the peripheries of the territory and when she showed up a week later she'd be lucky if she had one left. She was 9 years old, so she had no excuses. I'm getting all nostalgic, now. Nest-finding was the best job I've ever had.

These are great pictures Gina!  I will definitely check back to see how she's doing.  I love wildlife.  Unfortunately I've found a couple nests that fell out of our trees.  Oh and the bunnies thought that underneath my dogwalks would make good holes... um, no they don't.  So I've tried to move them around frequently to keep them from making nests and causing me grief should i run over a baby bunny.  :(
