Wow!  Incredible pictures.  I had no idea that birds didn't have feathers when they hatched.

woke up to FOUR hatched out of 5 this a.m.!

    And they are HUNGRY!

LOOK! number five has decided to hatch...whee! Lookit that lil' hot wing!

Wow, these pics are completely incredible!  That last one looks like it's only JUST hatched!  What do the kids think of these pics?  I used to be fascinated by birds when I was a kid... my dad showed me where to find nests and bought me some binoculars and I'd climb a nearby tree and watch them for ages.

Lily is interested...Eli could care less...LOL. The last one was just struggling from it's egg right then. It's out now...parents havent taken the shell out yet. Interestingly they fly the empty shells a ways out then drop them. I assume so as not to leave evidence that might attract predators.

The Momma has also lined the bottom with cellophane to waterproof it. I guess in times of yore they'd use snake shed skin for the same reason. Fascinating.

    Tongue Tied

Birds never cease to amaze me.

Gina, those pics are awesome!  I love wildlife and the whole circle of life thing.  You don't get to see such closeups often (unless you're watching Nat Geo).  Cool!

Justa couple from today...Momma (or Daddy?) on the nest...see them underneath? Rare shot this, I am usually too slow to catch them in there.

Still hungry...eyes should start to open this week...should be a different look!

Who needs to watch Nat Geo when Gina supplies us with up close and personal photos of all her wild life.  This is just too too cool.  First the pups, then the insects, snakes, turtles, kittens, now the birds.  This is just amazing.

You are right Gina, they totally look like hot wings LOL!!  Ugly, but cute, little things aren't they.

No peepers yet BUT...I thought the development of the feathering was very interesting...put one in my hand for size reference. They are easily TWICE the size today that they were upon hatching only a few days ago.

Isn't the pattern interesting and scale-like? Yet another sign of how close birds and reptiles are even now.

I can't believe you got one out of the nest - I would have been scared stiff of dropping it, or it being abandoned by mama for smelling "funny"!  But I'm sorta glad you did, because that is a wicked photo.... and I agree, VERY fascinating and very reptilian.

    • Gold Top Dog

LOL yes it is a fragile looking critter. Songbirds don't actually have a sense of smell so that's not a worry...dropping IS tho so I was very careful...I would have dropped my camera before this wee one....and that's saying something LOL.

One week old...here are some pics. The changes, in mere days...are amazing. Also amazing are the reptilian qualities of the chicks...they really DO look like they are related to lizards...lol.

Wow - so incredibly awesome!  Gina, I don't know how you managed getting the baby in and out without mama bird pecking your eyes out.  Was she even nearby?

    • Gold Top Dog

Probably...they are so tiny they're hard to see. She really doesn't seem to mind. This plant is literally RIGHT OUTSIDE our front door...up on our porch. She nor the male really have a problem with us...any of us it seems. I was taking photos the other day of them in the nest and she/he was sitting right on the garden sculpture next to me...waiting with her bug delivery LOL. When I went inside, bugs were delivered!

The are a friendly family. But I am worried because a danged CAT has taken up residence in our front yard....some stray, and once they are fledged and out trying their wings...well I worry.
