Does your town have a dog limit?

Does your town have a dog limit?

Does the town where you live have an ordinance that limits the number of dogs per residence?  Do you know -- do you care?

While recently looking up the formal wording for my local leash laws, I discovered that the town I moved to last fall has a two-dog limit per household.  IMO, two dogs is not that many at all and I find it very restrictive.  While I only have two at the moment, I do have plans to add a third dog within two years or so (when Kaiser is further along in his training and Luke is closer to retirement).  Apparently I would be in violation of my town ordinance if I did this!

So....  Do I get a third dog and hope nobody notices it or cares?  I assume that the county would be aware when I license more than two dogs, wouldn't they?  Or do I lobby to be able to have more than two dogs?

I understand the reasoning behind having limits, but I think to limit it to TWO dogs is a bit ridiculous.  What are the rules where you live?

Our town limit is 3. I went to the town office to get permission to foster and have 4 dogs, and it wasn't a big deal at all since all of our dogs are licensed, and our neighbors all know we care for our dogs and there are no noise complaints.

When you go to add a third, I would just go to the town office and find out what you need to do for a special permission kind of thing.

PS -- The two dog limit seems nuts to me.

Actually my limit in town is TWO.  License is "county" thank heavens.  But that's one of the myriad reasons why I have to be SO uber conscious that my dogs don't have a bark=fest outside.  "Continuous barking  for 7 minutes or longer ..." will get you a code violation and the 2d one gets the dog REMOVED.

Yes, a cop will literally stand there LOOKING AT THEM (and tell me a big imposing cop standing there CONFRONTING an animal that can see them doesn't encourage them TO bark non-stop???) and TIME this.  I've seen it.

So often city/village/county "code" is done because someone showed up at a few town meetings and made a royal pain out of themselves and got a law passed that will forever benefit few and harass many.

Ours is pretty reasonable I think.  In the county there is no limit, in the city it's 5 *animals* (any combination of dogs and cats), but if you want to have more you can apply for a permit.  The permit does allow inspection of the premises by an ACO but with 24 hours notice and you present, so it's not too underhanded.

I have no idea how many dogs are allowed.  All I know is we are permitted 2.5 horses for our property size...  I suppose I would want to keep the front half of the third horse and leave the pooping end to someone else. Hmm

No, no!  Half a horse means get a mini or a small pony.  Big Smile

The only fair thing to do is to share the horse with a neighbor.  Swap ends and you both get the good end some days and the poopy end the other times.

Seriously, we have a five dog limit here.  Two is ridiculous, IMO.

We have a limit of 2 per household but in my house there are 3 dogs.  Two upstairs and one downstairs. My two are behaved and licensed, and don't cause problems. The town knows this so allows me to keep my two. The dog downstairs however is a troublemaker (or his owner is) so the town keeps an eye on him.

Two is a dumb amount to keep it at. Alex and I are planning on adding a third dog in the future but I don't know about permits or anything like that. I'll have to look in to it when the time comes.

as far as I know our town doesn't have one.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Yes, 3 dogs 3 cats.

About 3 houses down is within the city limit and there is no pet limit.

yeah as far as i know there's no limit where i live. the only limit i have is my husband Hmm but i cant complain too much. i bring in strays all the time to rehabilitate (and they're NOT always dogs!)

our neighbourhood is strange. across the street is residential and the other side is agricultural.. so we can have pretty much what ever you can imagine will live on a farm.

as for the horse limit, its not a good idea to keep too many horses on a small area for the obvious reasons - sanitation, and enough grass to feed them all - but its sad there actually has to be a law or ordinance telling people that. seems like common sense to me.

Hmmm....I wonder what ours here is....My Moms neighbor has 7-8 yapping, barking Scotties. Her area is a crowded suburb, the houses are VERY close to each other. Nobody has ever filed a complaint about them though (even though they're extremely annoying). And the owners do know they bark all day (even when they're home).

Thankfully we don't have a limit in our town, since we have 7 dogs and 2 cats.  The ACO can come and check up if there is evidence they are not being taken care of properly or there is too much noise, which we don't have in our household.  But we are concerned because we both want to move closer to our jobs, but many towns where we want to go only allow 2 dogs.  If you go over that you have to get a kennel license, which we don't want to do.

No limits here for city or county...no licensing requirements either. I wouldn't be surprised if my subdivision had limits I don't know about...it's one of those big HOA thingies, but I asked around before I added #4 and no one knew. I hope to move somewhere more rural as soon as the economy turns around anyway.

My town does not, neither does my county (within reason, you can't have 100 dogs and no breeding/kennel permit). A few towns in our county have laws limiting to 2 or 3 pets. My HOA has a limit of 3 (I obviously have more, but they don't cause a problem and are all licensed/vetted, so I'm not worried).

The neighboring county has a limit of 10 pets per house - dog, cat, etc. and the DO activly enforce it!
