How did your dog get his/her name?

Mal is named after Malcolm Reynolds, from the (defunct, sadly) TV series Firefly, which is ... well, it's a sci-fi with sort of a westernish feel to it- it's great. His show name, Big Damn Hero is from a quote from the show. His litter theme was science fiction- his sister is Pebbles (kennelname) Pebble In the Sky, from an Asimov short story.

 
How ever did I miss this!!! Shame on me! Firefely was awesome and I love that quote. That's a good show name. What breed is he?

My husband and I both ran track and have a love for track and field, so we named our English Setter Relay, knowing she would be a very fast runner!

Mine are lame lol.
 
Brown is a chocolate Lab. He was already named by his foster family. It's not exactly creative, but Brown worked for me, and he didn't seem to mind, so it stayed.
 
Grey had some weird name at the shelter. The cage tag said Zaltana (whatever that is), but the shelter people pronounced it something like Zol-va-war. Don't ask. I have no idea. So since we didn't know WTH the shelter people were talking about, we renamed him. Brett chose Grey's name (but I picked the spelling). I like to think we were clever enough to figure out that when you mix black and white (Grey's colors), you get gray, but we weren't. He just looked like a Grey to us so that's the name he got.
 
Tar is a black Lab. He was also named by his foster dad. We kept his name because he has such a short attention span that he'd probably forget someone was talking to him if his name was any longer. lol That, and he really is slick and black as tar.

The first time I saw my dog, Otto popped into my head. He just seemed like an Otto to me

Beau's original name was "Frio" because all the dogs with him at the research kennel had names that were Texas Rivers (Rio Grande, Sabine, Colorado, Frio, etc. etc.). Pretty much I thought that was the dumbest name I had ever heard and there was no way I was going to call my dog that. He didn't know his name anyway, so I had no problem changing it.

I thought about calling him Sawyer, after my favorite character on Lost... but then Beau popped into my head a little while after having him and my mom said that since he was a Southern hounddog (mix) originally from Louisiana, he ought to have a southern gentlemanly name. So Beau it is.

However, I rarely call him that. It's usually beaubers or beaubie or bubby. Hahaha. []

Baby- Himalayan could fit in the palm of your hand at 6 months old.  Baby just fit.
 
Madi- Madison well if we ever had a kid we were going to name the girl Madison.
Madi is our girl. We will probably never have human kids.
 
If we ever had a boy the name will be Michailo.  It is a ukrainian name we have always liked.  But Madi picked us and she got the girl name.[]

When we first got Gizmo he would "talk" to me. He was very chatty and sounded like Gizmo from the Gremlins movie.. Plus when Gizmo was born he had a thick white stripe with a brown spot in it---but as he got older the brown solidified and now he has a brown spot and a white spot.[] So he kinda looks like Gizmo.

For those of you unfamiliar with Shorthairs, the ones with "ticked" coloring are born white and the coloring develops as they get older. (Like Dalmations)

Well Blazes name was never intended for him. And its not to intresting lol

When I was looking for a new dog. there was a shelter dog I wanted, named casey. I HATE that name (I just went to school with a girl with that name and her and I didnt see eye to eye so I hated the name lol) So I sarted ryming names with casey to try and change it for him yes it was a boy. Massey, no. tassy, no. Blazey kinda rymes, Blazey? yes i will call him Blazey.
Well sadly for me, but lucky for that dog. he got adopted before I could go in for a second look at him. So that left me dogles with a name. When I found my collie pup. I was like now what will I call you? And i though the heck with it. Blazey it is, but I just shortened it to Blaze. On his behalf he did look like a small little ball of fire with stricking bright looking red hair int he sun. So that is his name. Its normaly Blazer, but Blaze also, somtimes Lazy Blazey (But any one that owns a collie knows he cant be called lazey blazey to often haha) Its not orignal, but also not over played. Like the name casey, there is 6 dogs at the dog park named casey lol.

KayCee is named after one of my favorite actors, Keith Carradine.  Couldn't name her keith, so decided on the spelling of his initials, K and C.  So, KayCee.  honey is our adopted golden mix and hubby said "she looks like she is made of spun honey" and we named her Honey. 
 
WE got Buck when he was 6 months and his name was Bart, but I changed it to Buck after the "hero dog" in Jack london's Call of the Wild.  Hunter, well, our oldest son had planned on naming his first son Hunter, then is once best, but later not, friend named his first child Hunter. SO we gave the name to our golden puppy when we got him.  Ron also anmed our first golden Scooter because he would scoot his ball across the floor with his nose and then pounce on it.  And that is as far back as i am going.

I didnt name either of my dogs, but Snuffa is named after Snuffleupagus from seame street. 
Kayjin... well, I told my fiance if we got a a second dog he could name him [8|]
 

simply Bullseye because he has a little 'bullseye' on top of his head (that the breeder named, and I just didnt want to change it cause he was already responding to it.
 
 

My first dog was picked out and named by my youngest son. He was into collecting Yugi-oh cards. So we call him Yugi. When I got Pebbles she already had the name Coco. I was not real fond of that and named her Pebbles after Pebbles Flintstone. My son named Munky after the guitarist in the group Korn. Opie, my little red head is named after Opie Taylor (Ron Howard), son of Mayberry's Sheriff  Andy Taylor. Yaya, Shandi and Kyli were names I picked off the internet just because I liked them.
 

To make a long story short, Tango got her name because that's what I wanted to call my first Toller. She isn't purebred, but it fit her anyway.
 
Dance got her name because I wanted something that would go along with Tango's well, and Dance just suited her.

The people that I bought my dog from called him Shadow but I really don't think that name fits. I always think of the Golden from Homeward Bound..or even a pure black dog. Then they told me that the owners before them called him Timber. To me that name fits him so much better than any other name, so I changed it back. It was very easy too..I think he remembered being called Timber. He won't have to worry about a name change again as long as I'm alive because I will never get rid of him. I can't even understand how the two previous owners gave him up.

I really don#%92t have any interesting stories that go along with our dogs name.
  
Babydoo:  Baby got her akc name since she was the smallest of the litter and it was touch and go for her for awhile.  When she turned 6 weeks old the breeder let them play in the little patch of snow that was left from the storm baby would hop like a little bunny rabbit through the snow.  Her akc name is Baby Snowbunny Doo her nickname came from my husband not sure where he came up with the whole babydoo thing. 
 
Midnight:  Midnights name came from my husbands first Siberian Husky Princess Gypsy Midnight.  I#%92m glade we didn#%92t go ahead with calling her Princess since she is far from it lol
 
Sky:  Sky#%92s full name is Skylla the man eating she beast. Her full name came from an inside joke that me and girls would adventally take over the whole house with our girl powers. 
 
Gizmo:  Gizmo came with his name, his first owners named him after the little gremlin named Gizmo they thought he kinda looked like a gremlin from his puppy pictures.  I don#%92t see it.
