How did your dog get his/her name?

After emailing with Xerxes about his creative dog name, it made me wonder how everyone else's dogs got their names? I'm sure there are some good stories!

I am a military history buff, which is the reason I named "Patton" after General George Patton. He also had a low self-esteem and was very timid... I thought he deserved a "tough guy" name. [;)]

i am a military history buff too... i had a dog named after Brig. General Darby... Darby for short..
i had another dog named after Sir John Franklin - Franky for short (we brought him home the exact same day that Franklin was last seen in search of the North West Passage)
but... Kaydee got her name because i didnt like the name DeeDee.... my husband has a different naming style than me... i would have named her something more fitting.... lol Tonka, Stella and Xena were on my list of choice names for her.... but he didnt like them even a little bit [:@]

ETA... the name DeeDee was at first going to be D.D.. i was joking when i said it... he asked what it meant and i shrugged.. i dunno.. Dumpster Dog? Dum Dog? he liked that.... i didnt want to have my BULLDOG associated with dumpsters or stupidity...
but it makes a cool forum screen name [:D]

Nothing very interesting unfortunately. We got Ripley off an internet dog name site - he was very close to being named McCallan, but for some reason it didn't fit. My daughter named Frosty. I don't really like it, but I couldn't think of anything better at the time. I call him Frost alot b/c it seems more manly, lol.

Cara and Mia - I waited 16 years to get a dog until I had the right place and yard/property, so when I get them, I felt they were "my heart". Caramia means "my beloved" in Italian.

Jaia - I loved the name Maia, but he was a boy, so I went through the alphabet putting other letters on the front until I decided that Jaia felt just right.

B'asia - I liked the name Asia, but wanted something a little different. My husband and I both came up with it separately, so I figured it must be right. (The apostrophe is just for kicks) [sm=biggrin.gif]

Well my bf is a Marine and he wanted a 'manly' name for his 20 pound girl dog. Sancho is a term for the man at home sleeping with your woman ( I know horrible) Well we got a girl dog so Jody was the older term from Sancho and its slightly feminine. The best thing was when my grandfather(former Air Force)  looked at me and said now Wynter why did you name your dog that? I said G'pa do you know what that means.. he said yes, WHY did you name your dog that... I started laughing exactly for that reason

I had a couple of names I was thinking of for my pup until I saw his habit of running into a room and sliding to a stop with a goofy look on his face, just like Kramer from Seinfeld, so he sort of picked Cosmo for himself.

coco chanel is the dumbest name ever.  [:D] my sister and i couldnt think of a name.... well we did... but they were all even dumber.  jokingly, coco chanel was one of the names we came up with...and when one of my best friend, who's gay, said sarcastically, "what are you going to name your dog? coco for coco chanel?"  the name stuck cause we couldnt think of anything better...not a very interesting story.

we just call her coco, and everyone always ask how we came up with the name coco for a white dog.... and because our story isnt interesting, we just tell 'em it's not coco for hot coco, or coco beans... but it's coco for CoCAINE!!!  [:)]

    Nothing too thrilling here...[8D]

"Cadie" is just one of the Celtic/Irish spellings of Katie. She's an Irish Setter, which is why we wanted an Irish name, and this fit.

"Riley" was given his name because it's very Irish and he's an Irish Setter, and it also just seemed to fit him.

I didn't name Indy- his breeder did, but the litter theme was Harrison Ford movies. Even if he HADN'T known his name (I got him at nearly 5 months), well, I don't think I could have changed it- it just fits him too well. I really don't like his registered name but meh. Who cares. :P

Wings was named because she had a white splash on her shoulders- you couldn't see it very well and I never did get a photo of it. It was sort of wing-shaped, but.. yeah. She wasn't a well-planned puppy, I didn't have any idea what I wanted to name her, but I was walking around with her at a friend's dog training center after picking her up from the breeder, and someone asked me what her name was, and well, it just came out of my mouth. She responded to it from that very first time- I maintain she picked her own name. :P

Mal is named after Malcolm Reynolds, from the (defunct, sadly) TV series Firefly, which is ... well, it's a sci-fi with sort of a westernish feel to it- it's great. His show name, Big Damn Hero is from a quote from the show. His litter theme was science fiction- his sister is Pebbles (kennelname) Pebble In the Sky, from an Asimov short story.

I don't know how our dog was named, I was only 5 when we got her. Her name before us was Peaches... and so was our cat before that!

Well, my Aussie was going to be a different name but the name I had picked out didn't fit a black dog(in my mind it was wrong) so I had to come up with a new name. I went and looked at my favorite actresses on IMDb looking for names of characters they had played and settled on Dizzy. Actress is Dina Meyer, movie is Starship Troopers.

Rio isn't super original, but no one else in dog class has it. We fosterd for a while and we got a German Shepherd mix pup once who came with the name Brownie(YUCK) which just wasn't right for a Shepherd mix. We were told we could change his name so Rio he became. After he got adopted I said if I ever got a German Shepherd mix I'd name him Rio. I got my Rio last May.

Now I've got 2 names picked out for my next 2 female Aussies. But I'm not getting another dog until Dizzy is at least 10, and that will be another 5 years in November(her birthday).

When we first rescued our youngest lab, we named her Jackie.  After a week or so, I went to work and was telling a coworker about the major "attitude" she had and the friend said "she's sassy" and I said "exactly!!..and that's what her name should be".  We changed it right away and it absolutely fits her.  Our older dog, Buffy, was named by the people who had her previously.  DH thinks it's because of her stocky build, but I'm pretty sure it's because she's a light tan (i.e. buff) color [:)]

We got Guss at 6 months from the humane society and that was his name, so we kept it.  He also reminds us a little of the mouse from Cinderella

You're shepherds are gorgeous! Can I trade you? One pain in the butt, 105 pound 1 year old Shepherd mix for one of your's? Just kidding, I wouldn't trade Rio for anything. I just wanted to say how pretty your's are.

We have Kramer and he had his named changed to something that sounded like his old name when I got him through rescue. Then we have Peekaboo who lost an eye as a pup due to infection, another rescue that decided to stay with us.
