but NC's fleas and ticks are horrible,

You said a mouthful there!  I went outside to change my goats water and the minute I touched the bucket, I felt something on my arm and sure enough... A big ugly tick was looking for a spot to chomp down.  I am so sick of seeing these d*** things.  Maybe I should ove to Antarctica!!  I pulled 2 off of my dad's dog yesterday.  My stepmom forgot to order her flea meds.  Poor Coco!  What is an Amber Collar?  How much longer til winter?!

Raw amber is supposed to be a tick & flea repellant.

What part of NC are you located in?  We're south of Raleigh.  I LOVE NC, but I HATE the bugs.  We had a black widow spider in the garage last week while hubby was away and I nearly pee'd my pants when I saw it.  I got bitten by some type of spider many years ago, and it left me with four fang scars on my hip!  It was very painful for weeks!  I hate spiders.

I have been looking for a natural flea and tick repellent for a long time. I think I will start a thread devoted to that later today. J

I bought Sentry "Natural Defense" to try -- we'll see how it goes.

The link I got from Anne (gradyupmybutt) is http://amberstonepets.com/

An article of interest, regarding ticks and lyme disease. It actually takes 48 hours, after the tick has ATTACHED itself to the dog, for it to spread the disease, so if the frontline works within 48 hours of the tick getting on the dog, the dog will be protected against Lyme disease.

We are about 20 minutes away from Greensboro.

Eeekkk!  I hope you killed her!  They aren't aggressive spiders but they are highly venomous.  I kill everyone I see.  I haven't seen any of those around my house BUT I have killed 3 Brown Recluse spiders IN my house.

I would want to see the tests before spending $35 each on an amber necklace for 4 dogs!  Anyway, www.dogsandticks.com has a list of the topical preventives, plus the manufacturers that make them.  That might help in researching them.  Plus, for those of you in rural areas who can keep poultry, you may want to invest in learning to keep guinea hens.  A lot of people who have acreage here have them, and they devour ticks.

How is the Frontline Spray?????? I have some natural stuff that doesn't really seem to work very well, I mean it smells good and it's not too greasy (they gave me a sample at the holistic store), but I need something that works!! I found a live adult flea on Abbie this morning and a live tick on Layla right after taking them outside. The tick looked like it had just jumped onto her leg and hadn't yet attached, but she was itching it, so I looked and there it was... GROSS!!!!

I wish this apartment complex would treat the grass like they're supposed to, but they don't and the red ant mounds are *everywhere*!! They (and I) don't even like going in the grass here. I can't wait to move at the end of the month, but in the meantime, I need to get these bugs under control!! I feel so bad for them because they're constantly itching and I am afraid to switch them to another topical treatment. Layla has such a sensitive system that I can just imagine her convulsing all over the place. I can't even give her Flaxseed oil without her reacting to it!!

I'm still considering the SSS spray, but I'm nervous about the alcohol drying out the skin and the greasiness of the SSS oil. I love the smell, I just can't have the dogs be greasy and if I'm spraying it on them every time we go out I'm thinking the greasiness would build up and be a big problem. I looked into the Burt's Bees repellant, but all the feedback I read on that is that, yes it works, but it's really greasy.

If the amber collars work, I would love to have an update..... They are expensive though, but if it works, I'll try anything for my girls!!!!

I know Callie used/es the frontline spray -so you might want to ask her about it.

With the SSS - you don't HAVE to add alcohol to it - we never did when we used it, and never had a problem with the grease. You just don't want to over do it.

I too would love to try one of those collars - but spending $40 on something that might work is just not in my budget... thankfully - we don't have a tick problem here, and my advantage seems to be holding up so far...

For those of you who are kind of interested in amber collar but don't want to spend the $$ for something that may or may not work here's an idea....My rescue group is having an auction to raise funds (we are a non-profit org.).  One of these collars/necklaces is up for auction.  You can bid for one.  Not only would you possibly be getting a  beautiful & potentially functioning item but you would also help out less fortunate dogs.  http://community.dog.com/forums/t/93946.aspx

Well, I haven't been able to be back online to start a new thread. But my problem with trying any untested or known to work product is that you don't know it doens't work until you have fleas in your house. then  i have major problem with all the chemical sensitivities  I have, I would seriously have to leave the house for a long time if we had to bomb or fog it. But I would LOVE to know others had good results with something. i would definitely try THAT. J

I swear by Raid Fogger..... it's a blue box with three little canisters in it, you can get it at Walmart, Home Depot, etc. About $10-11 per box of three. It's an actual fog, not an aerosol that sprays all over everything leaving a residue. I do the treatment while the dogs are at the groomer as you have to be out of the home for at least 4 hours. I've used it for years and have never had an indoor bug problem and we're in Florida where insects are usually a big issue. I open all closets, cabinets, drawers, etc. and it works great!!!

I'm not a huge fan of the store brand flea and tick products. But I do understand the need for them, especially in areas where there is an abundance of these pests. I like to search for herbal remedies for most things I can help prevent. I found a little article I bookmarked that lists a few natural alternatives to preventing fleas and ticks. http://www.gomestic.com/Pets/Natural-Fle... I've been following it for a while and it's been working great. Even if it isn't 100% effective, the general health of my dog has improved. I hope you find a solution that works for you.
