Frontline not working?

    Frontline not working?

We have used Frontline for years with no problems whatsoever. We put it on 2 months ago, and again a week ago because the ticks are bad right now. Bear had two ticks on her last night and they had been on for at least part of the day. And they were alive. After only 7 days. How can this be? Should I expect her to get fleas too? Will we need to go to something else? I have always loike Frontline because it is kind of the least toxec of the toplicals, and I have aklot of chemical allergies myself, so having dogs in the house wearing chemicals is bad. But worse is de-infesting the house form fleas.

I spoke to the vet's office and they said they were showing resistance to frontline last year. They recommended advantix. I wonder how toxic that is? Julie

I've heard ticks are resistant to Frontline this year. Advantix is Advantage and a permethrin-type top spot combined. I can't use it because my Maggie dog is really allergic to those permethrin-type spot-ons. I've just been dusting with 5% Sevin and combing it out. We have the poultry in the yard and putting DE on the floors and then spraying the areas where they sleep with an EO combination. The house smells nice, anyway! For the fleas the dogs are also on Program. Haven't seen a tick or a flea since we started this up again this year. Don't forget when you have a dog that is itchy to fleas, by the way - it takes a couple weeks for the itch to die down even when the fleas are gone.

Advantix isn't something I'd use for the same reasons Becca mentioned.  And Frontline just isn't keeping up with Florida this year either -- it's the WORST flea year I've seen in over 13 years.  I'm dusting with Sevin 5% as well (which has helped a great deal) and I'm going to have to get the yard treated.  *Huge sigh*

Advantage isn't good with ticks.  But it all depends on when the ticks jumped on as to how long it would take for the Frontline to kill them anyway.  I'm also going to use Skin So Soft simply because I've got one dog with bad skin (Tink) and I just can't put topical spot-ons ON her because her skin hurts too badly otherwise.

    What's an EO combination?

I talked to the people at Frontline today, and they say there are NO cases of resistance to frontline. How about that? She said that it takes up to 48 hours to kill a tick that has already bitten a dog and that I should let the ticks on them until they die and fall off on their own. Can you imagine that? I told her the longer a tick is ona  dog, the higher the likelihood of disease transmission, and there is no way I'm going to let a tick feed on my dog so that the frontline can kill it insted of me. Geez. Julie

EO=Essential oil ***** Wow, that's some nerve of those Frontline people, but of course that is to be expected. They won't believe people actually using the product until sales go down, then they'll start saying, "Oh yeah, maybe there's a problem" and come out with a new product mysteriously at the same time.

I have a bone to pick with the frontline company. I've had a microscopic type of mite infection for about two years in my rats and because one girl has gone through surgeries lately her immune system is down so the mites have taken over. My vet insisted that I use frontline every week for two months at 12$ a tube - yeah right, if it hasn't worked after 4 treatments it's not going to work. I've heard before it doesn't work, the dose is too low and now I've expierenced it. I finally went to an oldschool vet who gave me canine ivermec - ivermectin, given orally every 12 days for 3 treatments, just gave the second one yesterday and all itching and scratching has totally ceased. Ask your vet about that stuff.

I had noticed that Frontline wasn't working to my satisfaction last year so I decided to alternate between Frontline one month & Advantage the next.  This year I'm doing another experiment.  I got a raw amber collar for Maghee & am planing on getting one for the boys.  Raw amber is supposed to repel ticks & fleas.  So far Maghee seems to be doing fine.

Annie, did you order Maghee's online; I've been trying to find them. Jessie is very sensitive to Advantix and Frontline Plus didn't control the fleas last year.

I've been questioning this for the longest time.  That the stuff doesn't work unless the dog gets bitten.   I want a repellant!

Ah. No wonder we are having troubles with our Bichon and ticks. I came in from a walk one day and found 10 ticks on him. It's interesting to read all the replies here. It appears to be a real problem with Frontline. That and maybe we are just in for a REALLY BAD tick season. I even found one on the back of my head. I don't remember the last time I ever found a tick on myself.

We did use Advantix in the past. But our dog had a very bad reaction to it. It affected his nervous system. He was all jumpy for over a day. He could not sit still. So that was it for Advantix. I really wish there would be some new company that would come in and produce some kind of miracle. If you can't use Advantix or Frontline, what do you use? Advantix and Frontline are the TOP TWO recommended by Veterinarians. Has something new come out in the past year?

It's not just the ticks. I switched Kord off of it almost 2 years ago now because it did no good for him at all. We were using it on him and he was still itching, found out he did have some fleas in an area hard to check for the fast buggers and an itchy dog. The vet herself told me not to waste my money on it, and of course that frontline would insist that it was still a great product.

I am interested in the sevin and EO blend?

vectra is a new one - and when I used it at the other shelter, it seemed to work well. I don't know if it does ticks - I think it does.

Promeris is new too - but I would NOT use that - it's systematic and smells REALLY bad - a lot of the dogs had reactions to it (hairloss, lethargic).

I tried Advantix on my dogs and it drove them crazy.  It was almost like it burned their skin.  I used the Frontline Plus all summer last year and it worked very good.  I need to buy some more for the dogs but if it's not going to work as well, I am not going to waste my money on it.

Misty had an allergic reaction to Frontline last year, and it burned her skin (I didn't notice it because it was underneath lots of fur) and then began to get infected, and by the time I realized it, it was this smelly, festering wound. It was terrible.

I'd LOVE to use something else, like something natural, but NC's fleas and ticks are horrible, so I'm not sure what would work.
