    Breeder in PA

Found another that looks OK can anyone advise if they ever dealt with her or known anyone who did, and what reputation she has?
The breeder is Hollow Hills GSD, their website is [linkhttp://www.hollowhillsgsd.com]www.hollowhillsgsd.com[/link]

Holy cow, if that's not a BYB I don't know what is. They have more litters on the ground than even remotely necessary. Way way waaaaay too many.

My advice, stay away. This is all too common with GSD breeders. I have seen upwards of 15 litters at a time being born within weeks of eachother. No good breeder does that, especially with this breed.

Man I really can't stand the look of those GSD's.  No offense to anyone with a GSD like that but the few I've seen in person, when they run, they look broken.  Or highly restricted in their hind ends....

Hmm, I see they've had 4 litters in the past year - of those, possibly 3 currently on the ground and 1 expected.  But it seems that Hollow Hills owns the studs, it could be possible that the females with the pups are not on site?

Also, that is a HUGE facility.  They certainly have the capacity to manage a lot more dogs than the typical hobby breeder.  I wouldn't say unequivocally that this is a BYB.  They might be perfectly OK, you just have to ask a lot of questions.

I'm always wary of larger scale kennel operations (you can see a picture of their kennels on their site) but I wouldn't necessarily say "backyard breeder". Their dogs are titled in performance and conformation and have the necessary health checks (OFA, CERF), and they emphasize on their site that GSDs are not for everyone. These are things that BYBs don't do.

I don't know anything about GSDs so someone else will have to talk about the finer nuts and bolts of their reputation and the dogs' pedigrees. And I personally am not as comfortable about a breeder that is operating at this kind of scale, but it's not uncommon and some very good breeders do make it work, so I wouldn't write them off just for that if everything else looks good.

I assumed at first they just had studs, but then I had to ask myself why on earth they would need that many litters being bred, still.
But, then I looked at the "Our Dogs" link, and got my answer.

It's a big commercial kennel. Only way to tell is to go visit and see if you're comfortable with how the pups are raised and if you like the parents. Speaking personally, those the are kind of hind ends I would stay far away from, and I would not be comfortable buying from a place that had that many dogs living in kennels and produced that many litters per year.

I'd recommend going over to germanshepherds.com - the forums there are VERY good and you'll probably find someone who has dealt with these people or can tell you more about their dogs just from the pedigrees.

I can tell you *I* wouldn't buy a dog bred by them, however, that's more just becasue I don't like their particular type of GSD.

wow............................... how do you properly socialize that many pups???

Actually she isn`t a huge breeder and definitely not a BYB. Sometimes she`ll have no ;pups and then a couple litters in a row.  She has incredible dogs and I wouldn`t hesitate to buy one of hers or one that has her lines in it. Her dogs have German pedigrees from German show lines so you`ll see a slight roach back. The angulation of the rear isn`t as bad as it looks in the stacked pics. These dogs can work. Her husband I think is a veterinarian. She is very selective in what she breeds and has excellent goals. Temperament, health and structure.
I know many dogs that have come from there.
Make the trip from Hempstead, she`s just above Scranton.

Not a commercial kennel. I see the pics of the dogs that are stacked. her dogs do not look like Am Show dogs. When you see her dogs at play or work they are of proper structure and do not walk on their hocks.

What are you looking for? What is your intention to do with the dog? Pet, show, sport or work?

Good dogs does not make a good breeder.
GSD's are the most numerous breed in the country. There is absolutely no need for that many litters. And it appears she does not even do rescue. I do not see how that is a good breeder, at all. I fail to see why this is such a popular trend in this breed, to have 4 or 5 or more litters down at a time, for thousands of dollars a piece even. Makes absolutely no sense, whatsoever.

You guys want to see a LOT of litters?  Check out [linkhttp://www.kolendakennels.com.%C2%A0]www.kolendakennels.com. [/link] I swear sometimes these people have 3-4 a month!  I met a German guy that bought a dog from them and now works there (b/c all their imports use German commands but some of their buyers want English commands, so he helps train them).  He told me that their Karly was bought for like $40,000 in Europe and that their Cay has a defect on his side that's not genetic, but they don't tell people and still sell his pups for $1500-$3000.  They do have good dogs for Sieger shows, but I'm not into that, and I'm not into GSDs that look like camels!!!!

ETA:  Not my cup of tea, but I would NOT call this a BYB or puppy mill.  All the dogs I've looked at so far are KKl 1 (read here what that meanshttp://home.flash.net/~astroman/survey.html ).

What hdkutz said...this is actually a very well known kennel with a breeder who I've heard nothing but good things about.

    She's worth checking out :-)

And just because it APPEARS she doesn't do rescue, it doesn't mean she doesn't (Doesn't mean she does either, but you know what I'm saying).

There are quite a few breeders who do rescue, but they don't advert it on their websites.

The Hollow Hill dogs are exceptional animals with exceptional pedigrees
