Need a Mate!

    • Gold Top Dog
I do even have a purebred rescue dog who is hands down the greatest pet I've ever owned. He's fixed and I would not have it any other way. I don't know squat about his lines other than who his original breeder was, I don't know anything about his working ability since I do not hunt with him, I'm totally unqualified to breed anyway, and everyone who talks to me about what an amazing dog I have, I have one thing to say to them: rescue. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of purebred coonhounds out there if you want a purebred coonhound. And if you just want a great family pet, our local shelter is bursting with them.

What you are proposing is simply not ethical. It doens't matter what you've done in the past, what matters are your actions right now. You will be becoming a backyard breeder and as someone who has rescued in the past I'm shocked that that very term doesn't fill you with horror as it does me.

I have a two year old female Siberian that I'd like to mate with either another Siberian or Malamute. I'm in the Portland, OR area and would appreciate any help!

    She's super cute!

All that aside, she's too young right now, as she's not filled out at all.  If she's over 18 months, she's not of breeding quality.  Her head is too narrow, she has a prominent tuck, her legs are too long and ears are too large.

Are these the traits you want to pass on within the husky breed?

All faults aside, has she been tested for any of the genetic issues within the breed?

Stud fees are usually between $700 and $2000 for good quality dogs.  If she's got her pedigree, then you could consult with her breeder for possible studs with qualities that would offset her faults.

Shane, that's a beautiful dog!  I do not agree with breeding dogs that are not proven (OFAed, CERFed, titled in conformation and other sports/work), but my main concern for what you are proposing is that I think you will have a hard time finding a good stud dog whose owner is willing to breed a rescue dog that has no titles or health certifications.  Like Ed/Xerxes says, you'd need to find the perfect match that compliments Sable's temperaments and drive and makes up for any faults.  I personally do not support any breedings that are motivated by any reason other than bettering the breed, and in this case, I'm not sure you will finding a willing stud (or owner, rather) that can actually produce puppies of better quality than both Sable and the stud.

I know you have gotten alot of responces so I am going to tell you my friend's story...maybe it will help (BTW this a true story):

Let me tell you my friend's story. She got a pure-bred shih Tzu from a "breeder" (I use the term loosely) and found out it was pregnant. Instead of having the uterus of the b*tch taken out she decided to "give the puppies a chance" and let the b*tch go full term and whelp.

She took the dog to the vet to get her checked and the vet told her she was not pregnant. Two weeks later she took the dog to another vet who said she was a month along and did a radio graph to prove it. Six heads were seen and my friend was short $400 (from both vet visits).

The bi*ch went into labor right on time and nothing happened, no puppies. This went on all night. Finally my friend took her dog to the vet the next morning. The vet did a cesarean section on the bi*ch and took all 6 puppies out. One died and the next day my friend took the litter and mom home and her wallet was $2000 lighter and the ***** still had her uterus (not sure why the vet didn't take it out when the puppies were born).

Since the bi*ch didn't have the puppies naturally she never nursed them. My friend and her husband were up every 2 hours to bottle feed. The puppies started to get sick one by one. Three died before they were a week old and the forth died a week after that. She visited the e-vet several times and that cost her close to $1500.

Her bi*ch started to get sick so she took her to the vet. Mom had a pyometra which is an infection in the uterus. Mom needed an emergency spay. That cost just over $1200.

The last puppy was given away to her friend…so she ended up in the hole $5100!!

Do you seriously want a member of YOUR family to go through this! Don't say it can't happen because it CAN!

sonic....your dog is beautiful ......but I have my questions if she is a pure Sibe....the ears are rather large, almost German Shepherd like, and not furry enough.

Please, reconsider breeding this animal, I am also involved in rescue, and honestly could not justify adding to today's dog population.......it would be defeating the rescue purpose that you are claiming to be part of[;)]

Lord have mercy. You came to a board where the majority supports responsible breeding. You are interested in breeding a rescue mixed breed bitch for all the wrong reasons and you're surprised by the responses? Rescuing animals, being associated with other breeders and helping whelp and raise puppies in the past does not negate the fact that if you breed this bitch, you will be an irresponsible breeder. You have no idea of this bitch's background, any pups she produces will not be just like her and you'd be surprised at how many people are in love with the idea of owning a dog and not the reality of owning one to the point when faced with an actual pup, they'll have more excuses than someone going to jail as to why they can't have a puppy now. Considering that Sibe/Sibe mixes are a dime a dozen, I would send those looking for a Sibe/Sibe mix to their local shelter or local Sibe breed rescue. And yes, you can even find puppies in shelters/rescues. I just checked Pet Finder and there's [linket.Breed=siberian+husky&;pet.Age=&;pet.Size=&;pet.Sex=&location=OR]LOTS>http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?pet.Animal=&;pet.Breed=siberian+husky&;pet.Age=&;pet.Size=&;pet.Sex=&location=OR]LOTS of Sibes/Sibe mixes in your area[/link] that are in need of loving homes.

If you truly are interested in breeding, why not acquire a quality Sibe from a responsible breeder and go about breeding in the responsible manner? I think it would be more beneficial to the breed, and the dog world, as whole to breed responsibly by preserving the breed standard and by breeding for healthier pets, as per health testing, rather than breeding a random mix in which you can find millions of those sitting in shelters and rescues.

    Hi Sonic,

I skimmed this thread but I think I got the jist.  I also have a dog with all the qualities you mentioned.  She is a Great Dane and she is deaf and albino.  She is also nearing the end of her life.  I want to continue this experience so I will seek out another dog like her.  Whatever the breeder did, the dog has an amazing temperament.  Yes, I am told not to go back to the breeder that sold me the dog.  I won#%92t.  There are enough similar dogs in shelters just like mine and its just a matter of time before I find Blizzard II.

I am struggling with the segment of breeders that call themselves “responsible”.  I am also struggling with the need and purpose for all the different breeds.  I take in shelters dogs and I will match anyone of them against any purebred.  Dogs are consider “sentient and sensitive creatures” so why do owners select just like they have a preference for automobiles.   I do believe the human-dog bond emotion is the same regardless of where the dog came from.

I understand that you want to recreate what you have in your dog and share your experience with others, but please consider that there are many shelters dogs just like yours.

I just wanted to include this very informative link about breeding.  Lots of information from a reputable, responsible breeder who's experienced almost every negative breeding scenario possible.  [linkhttp://woodhavenlabs.com/breeding.html]http://woodhavenlabs.com/breeding.html[/link]

....Hmm, inquiring on a heavy duty dog oriented internet forum for a random purebred stud somewhere in this world to breed with a rescue dog of unknown origin to have puppies because everybody likes the mom.  Sonic, if you have been lurking on this board before posting, did you not realize that you would draw lots of fire with such an inquiry?  I'm surprised that you were even taken seriously by anyone here.

    Can you say T-R-O-L-L?

    • Gold Top Dog
Hey Sonic, welcome to the forum.  I read the entire thread, aside from parts of the last page where some of our members replied without reading obviously.  Ah well it happens when something this contraversial comes up.  Don't take it personally, we work for the greater good here.[:D]

I'm in love with huskies.  And I unlike some others here don't believe a husky need be pure to breed.  I do however believe they need to be proven in harness.  A husky's job is to pull.  Your dog is beautiful, but she is not built for pulling.  She is too narrow, her tuck is too high, and if she is 2, than  she has not filled out as is necessary for harness work.  I'm not trying to be insulting, and I'm sure you will be, I would be if someone said that about my dog.  I'm merely trying to point out that if you breed her, you'll only be getting pet quality pups of questionable origion.

And what are the odds of getting a stud dog from someone other than a reputable breeder, (who we have already established would be unlikely to help you out) that would do the proper testing necessary for breeding.

You mentioned that you have rescued 7 dogs in the past 15 years.  Huskies have large litters.  Mine come from litters of 11 and 13.  So if Sable has 8 puppies and you find them all homes except one, keep that one, 8 puppies in shelters will die because your puppies will have taken their place.  I don't think you meant for the pups you rescued to negate the lives of those 8 puppies?  Please don't add to the problem that you have worked so hard to help fix.

I agree with the poster that said foster a pregnant bitch to get your puppy breath fix.  Help your friends and family to find rescue pups.  I guarantee you it will be more rewarding and you will feel great knowing you are continueing to help the growing pet population.

I'm really trying not to sound harsh.  In fact I came to this forum in much the same way, except I have the stud.  I was offered quite a bit of money and a puppy from the litter if I would let him breed to a bitch named.... wait for it... Sable.  She was a sable though.  I came here, and never left.

She is, bar none, the best dog I have ever owned. She is the most most healthy in the heart, the head, and the body (we have a GREAT vet who has done just about every blood test/shot cycle known to man). She has the best temperment of all the dogs I've ever owned and is also the quickest learner.
-- We have, to date, 9 requests for puppies from friends and family who also love the hell out of her. We will NOT be selling her pups for profit, we keep a list of those in our friends/family circle who have requested a puppy and will be keeping one for ourselves.

Here are my issues with these reasons. 1) There is no guarantee that her pups will turn out anything like her. Even if you cloned her and got away without throwing any new genes into the mix, the pup might not be anything like her. When you breed, the best you can hope for is pups with 50% her traits. In that case, send your family and friends into a shelter to hunt down pups that are similar to Sable. It's the same gamble.

    2) Dogs can and DO die giving birth. Are you willing to lose "the best dog you've ever owned" for a pup or two that may or may not be anything like her? I wouldn't take the chance of losing Cherokee even for 10 pups I knew would be exactly like her (and pups would mean I could socialize the heck out of them and have 10 dogs even more perfect than my Cherokee).

I'll spare you most of the anti-breeding spiel, because while I whole-heartedly agree with it, you've gotten it from others here. But I have a question. If you breed Sable on her next cycle, you'll have pups that are 3 years younger than her. They'll all die within a few years of each other. So how many times are you going to breed to keep a dog related to Sable? How many more dogs are you going to allow into existence, by the ones you personally breed, and all the ones produced from them, and from them, and on and on? Can you see now how there are so many millions of homeless dogs? It's not your one litter of pups (who I realize have homes lined-up) that causes the problem, it's the question of where it stops. Are all of Sable's offspring going to be fixed? I doubt it, because if so, what's the point of breeding her in the first place?

I'm also curious about why you're so sure you'll never find a shelter dog as "perfect" as Sable again. You found one already. You know what's out there. Why the determination to have another dog or several from Sable's line when there are millions of potentially perfect dogs sitting in shelters?

Hi Sonic. Beautiful pictures.. Absolutely lovely dog.    I want to say that I hope you will continue to stay with the forum.. there are a lot of very good, but also very passionate people here on idog.

My only other comment will be to ask you to REALLY think about what you are considering. I hope that you will read and reread this thread and let your conscience lead you in the right direction.

Good luck to you and      [sm=welcome2.gif]

Your dog is beautiful, and looks like a lovely pet.

Other people have said what I feel better than I can, but I feel the need to add this:

If the family and friends who want Sable's pups are old enough to be responsible for an animal, they must be able to look after themselves and acquire a pet in a responsible manner. Sable NEEDS you, to feed her, care for her, play with her and above all, look out for her best interests. She isn't able to do that for herself, and everyone here does that for their pets on a daily basis. Even putting a leash on a dog before going out is protecting your dog from the danger she could get herself into.

Therefore, it is not your job, nor is it responsible, to risk the best interests of an animal who is wholly dependent on you for the desires of people who are not.

    Sonic,
Sorry you were so rudely attacked.  I am new to this forum as well and experianced the same thing.  Hopefully you will stick around.  I think that the fact you already have homes for the future pups is great.  I do not really care if the dog meets some silly conformation so some people can be happy with thier hobby.  You show true care for the animals are being responsible by getting the nessesary checks. I do think it would be better to get shelter dogs but I would say the same to those who support "responsible breeders".  If someone is going to breed dogs then your expericiance and motivations sound top notch to me.  I do not get the attitude that the only reason to breed dogs is to contiue a hobby.
