    Need a Mate!

I have a two year old female Siberian that I'd like to mate with either another Siberian or Malamute. I'm in the Portland, OR area and would appreciate any help!

Here's a photo of my Siberian, Sable:

    Thanks!

Erm, not to be naggy or rude... buuut
I don't think you need to be breeding her, with some one elses dog, esspecially if you don't know them.
Have you done any  research on breeding? I noticed you used the word " mate" rather than breed. Either way, i feel like you should do more research and take the necissary precautions, and procedures ( vet visits, shots, tests /via blood test etc..) to make sure your husky is in perfect condition for breeding.
Back yard breeders breed for money.
This sounds like the case. Or even if you just want to breed her for the cute pups, its unethical and wrong. there are too many dogs in shelteres right now, in dire need of homes. And breeding a malamute and  Husky wouldnt be the best idea either, as they may look the same in some aspects, but they arent the same dogs.
Do you want to breed her, to better the breed? It surely doesn;t sound like it. OMO though. =\

She's a pretty girl none the less!

How did I know someone would give me 'The Talk' (although I didn't quite expect so many 'ass'umptions to be thrown in)

1- My family comes from a long line of GSD breeding (because of this simple fact, I'd NEVER want to be in the business of breeding)

2- I've owned a TON of dogs (and other animals) in my lifetime and, here's my silly assumption, even though I don't know you I'd bet that I've owned more than double the animals you have in your life time. But thanks for treating me like I'm a new pet owner. I'll make sure to use proper terminology next time.

3- The REAL reasons I want to breed her are:
-- She is, bar none, the best dog I have ever owned. She is the most most healthy in the heart, the head, and the body (we have a GREAT vet who has done just about every blood test/shot cycle known to man). She has the best temperment of all the dogs I've ever owned and is also the quickest learner.
-- We have, to date, 9 requests for puppies from friends and family who also love the hell out of her. We will NOT be selling her pups for profit, we keep a list of those in our friends/family circle who have requested a puppy and will be keeping one for ourselves.

4- I didn't clarify in my first post, but I'd like to breed her with a purebred. I've already spoken with local breeders and I'm finding that some of them won't do it since she isn't pure herself.

5- And, here's a little tid-bit for the high and mighty tone you have in your voice, Sable is a rescued dog from a no-kill shelter here in Portland (unfortunately, all three of her littermates died... horrific story, but that's for another time and place). She is the 7th dog I have rescued in the last 15 years (among the countless purebred GSD's I've owned in my life).

Hopefully I've provided a more useful post; I should've known that deffensive, assuming, and high and mighty personalities would come out of the woodwork on the internet if I didn't write a small book detailing my request.

More information yes. But this is all soundng horrible. First she has her shots great. Is she OFAed? Obviously not show as she isnt a purebred. So why breed her? Just becuase people want a dog like her doesnt mean she should be bred. NO puppy will ever be exactly like her. Why not use the money you would have on breeding and fine some rescues and buy those? Instead of bringing more mutts in to the world. Obviously no breeders in your area will breed to a mutt. Becuase no ethical breeder would breed a mutt.
Sorry if this sounds harsh. but it is the truth. There is no need to breed your girl.

...and I'm sorry if I replied harshly, but I get tired of these knee-jerk reactions that are ALWAYS the same wherever you turn when it comes to this topic. Just once I'd like to see somebody actually 'ask' what the intention is before jumping down peoples throat.

Don't shelters have a contract where you are not suppose to breed the dogs you get from them? Or That you are suppose to get them fixed?
    • Gold Top Dog
This one did not; they offer to pay for the spay/neuter, but do not require it if you get the dog before they have had a chance to do it.

    Hello Sonic,

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to see you were ... um ... greeted at the fenceline, so to speak.

It's late, and sometimes before-bed posts can be a little less thought out than, say, lunchtime posts. [;)]

You might find a more appropriate forum in the "breeding and whelping" section here, where you can talk to other members about breeding issues and possibilities:http://forum.dog.com/asp/tt.asp?forumid=84

    Your dog looks beautiful!

Honestly, it doesn't matter if you've owned and rescued a hundred dogs in your life and are one of the best pet owners in existence. That doesn't mean a thing about being a responsible breeder.

*She's a rescue dog, so you have no idea of her family history. You don't know what sort of health issues run in her lines- that is taking a huge gamble with the health of the puppies that you would be bringing into this world. You also didn't mention having any health tests done like getting her hips OFA'd.

*Having people who want a dog "just like yours" doesn't mean breeding her would be a good idea.

*What does is matter if you breed her to a purebred dog since she isn't purebred herself? They would still be mixed breed puppies so I'm not sure why you mentioned it.

I'm 99% sure that it's illegal in Oregon for shelters to adopt out dogs that aren't spayed or neutered or don't AHVE to be spayed and neutered, with the only exemption being for reclaimed strays. I'd have to check though, and it might be citywide, not tate.

Regardless, **Content Removed - Rude Post** if you're going to breed a dog of unknown pedigree based purely on 'she's a great dog'.
    • Gold Top Dog
Look, I've always been of the same mindset that 99.9999% of people should adopt. That's why, to date, I have adopted so many animals throughout my life. **Content Removed - Profanity**, I even have two adopted Ferrets, here is Skip and Fidget with Sable:

The bottom line is that I want to have another dog from Sable's line; purebred or not. I'm not here to argue about symantecs or idealology. If somebody can help, great! If they can't, oh well. Just spare me the lecture, I've probably done more for sheltered animals than those of you who are repremanding me.

I guess its a lost cause with this soon to be back yard breeder. he doesnt care at all. How do you know you want somthing from her line when you dont even know her line? Personally i think its really ignorent on your part to say you are a rescuer yet you breed a rescue dog. sad poor dog.
