    Need prayers for little puppy

Early this morning I was up and preparing dog food when I heard something that made all three of my dogs leave the raw meat and run for the back door. I couldn't tell what it was until I got outside but then I heard it more clearly- it was an animal screaming in pain. I ran to the back of the yard and jumped the fence and almost ran straight into my neighbor, who had his poor yard puppy (recently aquired a few weeks ago, I had seen this poor baby chained in his backyard the day after he got it and brought him one of my old rescue doghouses filled with blankets since he had no shelter) suspended by his BACKLEGS over a bucket of black substance. The puppy was choking and gagging and was covered from head to middle in black muck, with some of the substance oozing out of his nose and mouth. Needless to say, I nearly football tackled my neighbor to the ground to get the puppy away from him.  Then I used my jacket to siphon as much of the substance off of him as I could, which I could tell by the smell was used moter oil. The whole time I am ranting and raving at this lunatic who is telling me he was "treating" the dog for mange and it was perfectly fine. I told him I was taking the dog, he said he was calling police, I said thank you that would save me the time, and I ran for my house. By the time I got the puppy inside and started using a bulb aspirator on him he was already fading. I got as much out of his mouth and lungs as I could and got in the car to take him to the ER. By the time I got him there he was unconcious but the vet was able to get oxygen to him quickly and he woke back up while I was there. He is being given charcoal and is on IVs to flush out his system.

When I got back to the house the police were here waiting for me regarding the "theft". I explained the situation, showed him the pics I took on my camera phone, gave him the number to the local vets and showed him the moter oil covering my jacket, shirt, sink from the bulb aspirator and car. Then I took him to the back and showed him the bucket the neighbor was dunking him in and explained to the officer that I hadn't stolen the dog, I had taken the dog to the vet as it was in a life threatening situation. If the guy would like to go and pay the...oh..$1500 vet bill or whatever its going to be, he is welcome to pick up his puppy (knowing he would NEVER pay that bill). I then told him to call animal control and have them come out as I wanted a creulty case investigation.

So, it's been an eventful morning. Haven't heard back from the vets yet, but I am hoping the little guy makes it. Sadly, I live in a VERY rural part of NC where chained dogs are the normal and house dogs are considered weird, and this is actually the second time in 7 years I have caught a neighbor " treating" skin ailments/wounds with moter oil, although last time it was a dog that had gotten in a fight and the man had dunked a rag in moter oil and tied it around the leg. God knows how this idiotic wives tale started, but it is certainly responsible for a lot of grief in my area.

Anyway, prayers please for little puppy who doesnt have a name yet. And prayers that this stupid *** gets whats coming to him.

Wow...just...it's almost unbelievable, that poor poor puppy.  But bravo and kudos for you to rushing to that puppy's aid, I hope I would be as brave and quick thinking if I was in a situation like that.  It's absolutely idiotic that your neighbor was dipping that puppy in motor oil.  He doesn't deserve dogs, doesn't deserve animals of any kind.  Please keep us posted on how the puppy convalesces, and what happens to the neighbor!

Prayers to the puppy, and once again, what a great act of kindness you did today.

I am completely horrified by your description of these events.  That poor, poor puppy!!  Bless you for acting so quickly to step in and take control of the situation and try to save the poor little guy.

By your description of the area you live in, it sounds like animal control isn't likely to do much...  I hope you keep pressuring them -- but no matter what, I hope your jack@$$ neighbor doesn't just go out and get another puppy to replace the one you "stole" (ie: saved).

I really hope the puppy pulls through.  Are you able to keep him or are you going to try to find him a new home?  Good luck with whichever situation you choose.

Oh gosh -- yes, I knew people were still doing this for demodex but good night.  PLEASE email me -- I will send you my article on demodex.  This idiot isn't going to be open to doing something like that but oh heavens -- he thinks "dip" means suspend the dog over something and dunk him?  (My Tinkerbell is a demodex dog and I've dealt with THOUSANDS of demodex dogs over the past 11 years)

I would have done the SAME THING.  (and my husband would have had to restrain me not to smack the neighbor)  I can't send you the info via PM because it's an attachment, but if you email me I can send it.

OMG, that is the most horrific thing I've ever heard!  Thank goodness you were there to save this poor pup.  Lots of prayers from Atlanta that the little guy recovers and that your neighbor is punished for this.

And huge kudos to you for what you did.  Were it me, the neighbor might have found out what motor oil tastes like.

    Please keep us posted!

Tongue TiedSurpriseSuper Angry   I'm speechless.  But thank you for doing that.  I'm not sure I would have had the guts but sometimes, instinct just takes over.  Poor pup!

    • Gold Top Dog

WOW. That is absolutely horrible!!!! I just can't fathom how people can be so stupid and cruel to an animal. UGH. Awful.

Thank you for saving that poor little puppy! He must have been so scared! Keep us updated.

I too an speechless.  Are the cops going to do anything?!  Can they arrest this guy!? I hope the little pup makes it!

Thank you for saving this puppy from a horrible death.  I hope he pulls through and your idiot neighbor gets some sort of punishment.  Around here I still hear of people in the country using diesel to control fleas, ticks, mange, treat wounds, you name it.  Or kerosene is another popular treatment.  Arghhh. The truly sad part is that most of these people really don't think it harms the animals and will quote you chapter and verse on how granpappy did it and pappy too and all their dogs were just fine.

Let us know if we can be of any assistance for this little guy.

    Same here.

You are super brave! Thank you for saving that pup!

Holy cow.  What part of NC do you live in?  My part is very rural too but they aren't stupid!

Kerosene is used to treat sarcoptic mange - honestly, done properly it's not much worse than Amitraz in my opinion, not that I'd do either unless I were desperate.  Probably someone along the way got confused - you know, motor oil, kerosene, what's the diff?  It's just a dog, you know. Angry

I didn't know that but it does make sense as to why people decided if one petroleum based product works then the others will too.

Broken Heart  My heart broke when I read this.  How can people do these kinds of things?  I will never understand the ignorance.

Your efforts are nothing short of heroic.

I hope your neighbor "gets his."

That is just....horrifying.  Sad  Sending vibes that the little pup not only makes it but ends up in a home where its life is not put in danger.

.  Probably someone along the way got confused - you know, motor oil, kerosene, what's the diff?  It's just a dog, you know.

The idea is that the burnt motor oil suffocates the mites and sulphur (which would be a component in the oil) has long been a treatment for parasites.  I've seen people actually slather demodex dogs with vaselline and call it a 'modern cure'.  (It's not either.)

Demodex mites *eat* oil.  Any kind of oil really -- and motor oil seems to be toxic to them.  That's why things like neosporine can actually make it worse, and it's why frequent bathing can help. But good night, the word 'dip' is used to indicate topical treatment for parasites and you sponge it on (whether it's amitraz/mitaban or lyme-dip or whatever -- and generally whatever treats sarcops does *NOT* treat demodex simply because the mites are so different -- sarcops feed on blood, demodex mites feed on oil).

BUT you don't hang them in a freaking bucket of anything -- It honestly doesn't work well at all (none of them do because demodex is an immune-system problem) in any event but the utter stupidity of this just steals my breath away.  Because it starts on the face he probably decided to do it face first but good heavens, that's just beyond unfathomably stupid.

But Becca's comment "it's just a dog" is so much the way such people think ... and so they take some thing they have (like old motor oil, kerosene, etc.) and use it as a cost-free/cheap solution.  All it takes is one dog to 'survive' (in spite of it) and they think they have a 'cure'.

I looked at Tinkerbell as I read this and thot "but for Grace go YOU, little girl!" -- she was just put outside in the sun because she was "stinky" *huge sigh*

    Edited for clarity (I hope)
