Info on dog tags

Is it possible that some dogs would be more likely to let a stranger handle them if the person was able to call him by name?  Just throwing that out there.  Smile With Max it wouldn't make any difference if someone called him Mud.  He'd go to anyone.

I never put the animals name on the tag - too much other info needs to be on there with limited space, and there is no NEED for stranegrs to know my dogs name.  They DO need to know my contact details and that my pet is chipped.

You're the first to mention this but I was wondering about it too. Why would a stranger need to know my dog's name?

I've heard it can be detrimental, allowing a thief to gain your dog's trust... but I don't get that.  If they are close enough to read the tag, then they are close enough to steal the dog!  Plus, if your dog is LOST and someone genuinely wants to HELP him, being able to build a rapport with him by using his name (something he recognises and associates with Home) is probably a good thing.  I do think most people who find your dog and are interested enough to check the tags, will be dog lovers who want to return him, not steal him!  I also think that if your dog is not very distinctive-looking (one spaniel looks much like another to most people for example), then having the name on the tag is like an extra distinguishing feature, helping people ID the dog...  so yeah, i suppose there are good reasons to put the name on there, but it's not as important info as the other stuff.... to begin with, the dog's name is not a legal requirement Smile

At the dog park once there was this big burly dude with a yorkie and I looked at the little things tag when he came up to me, it said his name phone number, and on the other side "if you find me, call my dad, or he will find you". I thought it was so funny I almost peed myself.

When I have had tags made, I've always included the dog's name. Dog's names are not the same to them as our's are to us - most dogs will readily answer to other names (and my own dogs get called all sorts of nicknames all the time). If someone finds and wants to keep your dog it doesn't matter if they know the dog's name or not - either way they can call the dog whatever they want to.

I'm going to have to get a couple "needs meds" tags - something I hadn't really thought about until now. My dogs rarely wear collars unless we are out and about and mostly I have just put phone numbers on the back of their liscense and/or rabies tags. I like to attach tags to a sturdy clip that can be moved easily, since I have tons of collars despite having dogs who don't wear collars 90% of the time....
