I never put the animals name on the tag - too much other info needs to be on there with limited space, and there is no NEED for stranegrs to know my dogs name. They DO need to know my contact details and that my pet is chipped.
You're the first to mention this but I was wondering about it too. Why would a stranger need to know my dog's name?
I've heard it can be detrimental, allowing a thief to gain your dog's trust... but I don't get that. If they are close enough to read the tag, then they are close enough to steal the dog! Plus, if your dog is LOST and someone genuinely wants to HELP him, being able to build a rapport with him by using his name (something he recognises and associates with Home) is probably a good thing. I do think most people who find your dog and are interested enough to check the tags, will be dog lovers who want to return him, not steal him! I also think that if your dog is not very distinctive-looking (one spaniel looks much like another to most people for example), then having the name on the tag is like an extra distinguishing feature, helping people ID the dog... so yeah, i suppose there are good reasons to put the name on there, but it's not as important info as the other stuff.... to begin with, the dog's name is not a legal requirement
