Dog Collars

    Dog Collars

What type of collars do you prefer? What are your dogs wearing?

Cassidy has had quite a few collars.
2 small red nylon puppy ones
1 Hamilton blue nylone buckle collar
    1 blue nylon adjustable collar
    2 different leather ones
1 leather collar with her name and phone number embossed on it

I have ordered a new purple nylon buckle collar with her name and phone number stitched into it as well. So she will have 3 collars that fit her now [;)]

As far as wearing them, I always take off the dogs' collars at night for bedtime, and the puppy's collar when she is in her crate. They wear them except when training, then have training collars on.

Bailey has a light pink collar with little flowers on it, and she never really wears it unless we have people over or we go for a walk.

And I ALWAYS scratch real good on her neck where it was when I take it off... they LOVE that!

I guess I'm a minimalist! Bailey has 1 collar...a blue & purple nylon flat buckle. Her tags are on it and she wears it outdoors, when people are over or when we travel, but not daily in the house (she's a nudist). [:D]  I think I'm going to get her a nylon choke for walking/heeling. She has a gentle leader but I don't use it anymore. Oh and we still have the faded purple collar she was wearing when we got her...I use that when I give her baths (attached to tub tethers).

My dog has a leather collar that she wears around the house and a choke collar that she wears when she's working. The leather collar has all her tags on it and her choke collar just has a medallion on it that says she's a guide dog. She also has a halti on when she's working.

I like buckle collars for wearing around the house and martingales for walks.

    Tango:
Lime green embroidered (name and #) nylon metal buckle collar (wearing right now)

She's also got the following that she wears when another gets dirty...

    -Teal hamilton nylon collar
    - One Rogz collar
    - 5 martingales
    - One prong
    - too many other flat nylon collars to count...lol
    - One harness for trips to the river or hiking
    - One leather buckle

    Winston:
He doesn't wear a collar aorund the house, he's allergic to nylon and can't wear them long and since he's not technically my dog (he's my parents) I don't really want to spend over $30 on a leather collar for him esp. since my Dad will tell me it was a waste of my money.

    He has...

    - One Rogz collar
    - One blue hamilton nylon collar
    - Various martingales

    Morgan:

    - 2 Rogz buckle collars, only one that fits now though (she's wearing it right now, it's purple ith geckos on it)
    - One Lime green Hamilton Collar
    -  Martingale

    Tia:

    - Red/teal/goldy coloured nylon collar
    - Purple/teal nylon collar
    - Harness for walking

Blue has a bandana printed nylon adjustable which has all his tags on it and a red buckle collar that he still can't wear.

Eli (mom's cat) has snap release nylon adjustable collar. He did have a buckle collar, but since the cats like to fight and it kept coming off.

Mocha can no longer wear any collars since he will dig a ring around his neck to get it off which that is what he did with his first collar.

We have a bunch of collars, but the only ones that work for actual walking are martingale collars. For some reason, my dogs (Teenie in particular) find it VERY easy to slip out of collars. They do it without trying. Harnesses work, to a certain extent, but they tend to rub under Em's arms, and Teenie can slip one (it's those short legs). The good thing is, neither will really leave me, LOL. We DEFINITELY like our martingales the best. We have one very wide, fleece padded martingale, and several nylon, regular width ones.

Jennie, can you describe a martingale?  I'd like to keep something like a harness on Misty because she can pull out of her collar but she's chewed up two harnesses already.  I'm concerned about how comfortable they are too..

    I LOVE collars!!!

Bernie would have a billion if I didn't love the one I have for him right now as much as  I do. He has a dark brown leather collar with brass buckle, lined on the inside with buttery soft deerskin. It's from the Weaver company and it was only $9!! (They are around $20 for the same thing at Petsmart!! I also still have the original collar I bought him, which is a black nylon buckle collar with a leather overlay on it.

I walk Bernie on martingales as his neck is as wide as his head and can easily slip out of his buckle collar, even when tight. He has one black nylon and chain martingale, but the one I use the most is a hunter green and khaki nylon collar/lead combo.  This style is usually used for showing some of the larger breeds of dogs.

Midori, the kitty, has a blue faux-suede collar that has pastel metallic enameled flowers on it. It's the one she is wearing now, it has her tag on it. She also has a 'silk' one with an oriental floral design, and a blue and purple webbed nylon one. She has a neon pink walking harness, as well.

Nikki has a plain blue Nylon one.  Cairo has the special collar because he's "my" dog instead of the family dog, and I bought him a very handsome leather collar with a brass nameplate with his name on it.  Got it from Quillan Leather and Tack I believe it was called.  I love it  [:)]

Gypsy wears a plain choke chain when we're walking or in the ring.  She has a thin green nylon collar that she wear off and on.

I like the Premier Collar. A martingale collar, generally speaking, is a collar that has a section that "slips". Some have a chain section. Some are leather with chain. Some are nylon with chain. Some are all nylon. Some are "greyhound" collars, which are very wide, and don't choke the dogs if they pull (look on ebay for some GREAT Greyhound collars!).

I REALLY like them. They've worked the best for us, of anything.

Owen has a green webbed buckle collar with his name stitched in gold, which my girlfriend made for him for Christmas, and a nylon one with plastic snaps and butterflies that my neighbour (whose dog I walk daily) gave him.  Does anyone know anywhere on the internet where I could find one with a train embroidered on it?
    • Silver
Owen, there's an eBay seller called The Dog Collar Lady who has a ton of designs for collars and leashes; I don't know if she has trains but she might be able to custom make you one. I've been pleased with what I bought from her for our dog Miko, it was a nylon collar with pretty fabric sewn over it; she does quality work and both collar and matching leash were durable but soft.

Jennie, Thank you for the martingale description and the link.  I see how it would work and tighten when needed and will probably order one.  They have the perfect color for Misty, too!   Miko looked best in sage green but Misty's color is bright teal [:)].

I guess I'm a mimimalist, too.Max only has one collar - a 1" wide blue & purple snap on. I don't change collars because that would involve moving the tags also and I'd probably lose half of them. [:)] He wears it all the time except when we're walking (he uses a prong then) but I wrap his collar around the leash handle so I'll have it with me.  For variety & color he uses bandannas.
