Willow was in a fight!

    Willow was in a fight!

I am falling apart. . .DH called me at work.  He was walking Willow (on leash as always) around our neighborhood.  Out of nowhere, a Jack Russell terrier or whatever they call them now ran up to her and attacked her.  I asked DH and he said, the dog literally ran from it's owner to her and just grabbed her back leg.  Willow, of course, defended herself by picking up the little B by the neck and gave him a big shake!!

I was like OMG, is he dead!????  But, DH said the owner kept calling him from down the street and he finally ran back.  We have never seen this dog before.

DH said he hurt his shoulder trying to get them apart.

I'm just SO PO'd, I'm so sick of this being an issue.  We walk our dog on leash.  This is the 2nd time in the neighborhood she's been attacked and twice at the park--which allows dogs but they are supposed to be leashed there too--she's been attacked.

They say the chow is so dangerous.  Honestly, I'm so fed up.  My dog has never started a fight.  She's never off leash.  But, she's not going to just stand there and be attacked, she is going to defend herself.

It's just so upsetting to me.  Now, she's hurt again and we don't seem to be able to go a week without seeing the vet.

I'm just so tired.  I'm sorry this isn't making sense.

We are going to try to fence at least some part of the yard for her.  I don't know what else to do.  We live on like a little farm with greenhouses.  It's in the city but this property is commercial.  It's hard to explain but there isn't a lot of space but there is a lot of land.  I'm going to get more Direct Stop for DH and I told him to avoid walking her if possible.

But, how is this fair to Willow???  We do everything right, everyone else gets to break the law and do whatever and enjoy the park and walking in the neighborhood.  It's not right!

Oh, my gosh. Poor Willow! She wasn't doing anything wrong and that nasty little dog just attacked her out of nowhere?!

I hope her injures aren't too bad :( poor thing!

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes, totally unprovoked, DH said Willow didn't even see him from where he originally was.  See, she doesn't see that great anymore, especially at night.  And, little dogs like that, she usually doesn't even notice them unless they are making noise.

She really is a don't bother me, I won't bother you type of dog.  Plus, she's not loose.

    So sorry to hear that.

I would not leave the house without pepper spray.

Lori - I'm so sorry and I know exactly how you feel. I rarely walk Sassy anymore because of the same thing happening 2x to us. Sassy is also a  "leave me alone" type dog, but she's fear aggressive and when an idiot dog off leash charges her, she panics. Nothing bad had happened, but I just didn't trust that it wouldn't the next time. DH walks her and has had some issues to but has handled them well.

Ironically, the same SIL with the dobe pup that got whiplash also has a JRT. She told me the other night at dinner that she's recently tried a nylon muzzle cause the dog has attacked a couple other dogs and recently bit a neighbor. Now why the dog is allowed that much freedom is beyond my comprehension, but I don't think the owners of these types of dogs GET IT! It's so frustrating and sad for you, me and our dogs.

I hope Willow doesn't have any serious injuries and your husband's shoulder isn't too bad. That must've been a scary time for him and it should've never happened Angry

    Yes, totally unprovoked

eeek, I wasn't questioning you! It was more of a rhetorical, can't-believe-it kinda thing. I feel so sad for Willow - she must have been so scared to have that dang dog run up to her and not even be able to see it!

Oh man, Lori, poor Willow just can NOT catch a break can she?  Poor little girl!

Please tell her that Auntie Glenda and the crew are sending all kinds of wet, sloppy kisses and get well soon vibes!

LOL! I am sorry I got to laugh because I know how you feel but I have Jacks and they get attacked by bigger dogs either loose or tied to a F'N foot stool. Lesson to be learned.. don't walk the dogs in the neighborhood go elsewhere ... park, trial or whatever. but I have to applaud that Jack that's what a terrier is all about, no fear and who gives a rats *** on the size. My Scout will not back down to any dog and I have to watch out for that. That's why there are terriers in this world.

I think you're out of line a little here. Obviously Lori is upset that her dog and husband are hurt and it must have been terrifying when it happened. Sorry, I just don't find *any* humor in it at all. Even if you and Lori are good friends, it's just not appropriate and to tell her to walk her dog elsewhere, it's her neighborhood. She shouldn't have to go elsewhere.......

I am so sorry to hear this...... Willow has been thru so much lately and I cannot believe the owner of the JRT didn't even bother to come and see if your dog and husband were okay. That infuriates me. I hope they're okay - sending good vibes!!

Poor Willow, I hope she is alright.  I can completely feel your pain and frustration on this matter.  My number one pet peeve with other dog owners let their unleashed and out of control dogs charge Kirby.  Perhaps I'm even more so sensitive to the matter because Kirby was leash reactive and a loose dog charging us was the last thing I needed when dealing with his fear based reactivity in relation to other dogs.  Even though I've gotten him over his leash reactivity, I've given up walking in my neighborhood, unless I have someone with me to play bodyguard because there is a 50% chance on any walk that we are going to run into at least one loose dog.  Just not worth the risk.  One time I had a pack of four large dogs charge straight for Kirby, and if my dad hadn't been there he and I trying to protect him would have gotten mauled.  My little 95 pound body just isn't intimidating enough on its own.

Now a days when I walk alone I have to drive over to a neighboring gated community that actually enforces the leash law. =(

I fail to see what is humours about dog attacks, regardless of what breeds are involved.  Would it have been funny if when shaking the jack Willow snapped its neck and killed it?

I also fail to see what attacking another dog that's completely minding its own business has to do with being a terrier or having proper terrier temperment.  Sounds more like a poorly trained dog with issues to me that should have been properly restrained by its owner.

I completely agree with Krissim Klaw. IMO **NO** dog of 'good' temperment should ever act like that. I understand there were bred to be tanicious, but that was completely unprevoked, and that JRT had NO reason to attack Willow. THAT is not 'proper temperment' IMO.

Lori, I hope Willow is OK, and I do hope that doesnt happen again.

Gosh poor Willow! I live ina  neighborhood where loose dogs are always a problem, sometimes I have to even throw rocks to keep the nippy dogs away. I plan on buying that spray you use to keep strrange dogs away but keep putting it off.

    • Gold Top Dog

Lori, dang I'm sorry -- we spent a ton of money a couple of years ago re-doing our fence and enlarging the yard simply so we don't have to go to dog parks.  You "shouldn't have to" go outside your own neighborhood, but the fact is that there are idiots in this world and a good share of them seem to have dogs that they don't bother to restrain.

I don't even bother with 'fair' anymore -- we just care about "safe".  And shoot, I still worry about owls and osprey snagging Tink and Kee Shu.  So we always have to be vigilant, but darn I'm sorry this had to happen to stress her out -- I hope it doesn't cause repercussions.

    • Gold Top Dog

Willow showed restraint and the other dog's owner is totally an idiot for allowing this to happen.  I hope Willow is OK.  Sending calming thoughts for you all.

ETA: As some of you know, I own a Jack and I would never dream of allowing my dog to attack another dog, it doesn't matter what the breed is, this is unacceptable behavior.
