"Beware of Dog"

    "Beware of Dog"

I've heard/read several mentions that "Beware of Dog" signs can actually be a liability because theoretically, it demonstrates that you knew your dog could be a danger, in the event of anything happening.  Ben would probably help burglars out any way he could, but they don't know that...so we have other burglar alarms lol.

Anyway, I was recently in a shop that sold "Dogs Running Loose Inside" signs, which I think circumvents the above problem....can anyone else see any problems with putting up such a sign?

I don't see any problem with it - to me the sign means 'hey there's a dog in this fenced in enclosure, don't let the dog out' and I think it's rather friendly. Sort of thing one might see when entering a doggie day care or dog park or somesuch.

It's all in how it's worded.

By saying "BEWARE" it tells me that you have something in your yard people need to be cautious of.

Rather than that sign - I advise people if they are going to hang a sign say "Dog in Yard" rather than beware.

I can easily see how a sign like that can, and is, used against people in court.

It's actually for my house, not my yard...I'll put it in the front window.  I want people to be aware of the presence of my dog/future dogs plural, but without explicitly "warning" them.  Hence the "Dogs Running Loose Inside" sign just meaning "hey, there are dogs in here, expect barks when you knock, expect to be greeted when you come in".

Huh I never thought about the wording of beware of dog and being used in liability cases - makes sense though.  I think Dog Running Loose sounds fine.  I wouldn't take that as a warning their is a vicious dog on the premises but rather expect to see/hear a dog running around/barking.

That said - Ari would help out a burglar too lol.  She has a MEAN sounding bark, and is a great watch dog, but if someone were to come in and she was loose (she's kenneled up when we are home) she'd bring them her frisbee!

Maybe just a 'dogs in house' sign?

I wouldn't put beware - because Casey DOES have a bite record (not official, I don't think - but he has bitten). I don't want to advertise that I have an aggressive dog in house. But - Ben is not Casey.

My Mom has a cute sign for their door....it says, "Do not let the dog or cat out! No matter what they tell you!" Just so people know there is a dog and cat inside (so be prepared to be greeted), and don't let 'em out!

The sign I'm looking at doesn't say "Beware"...it just says "Dogs Running Loose Inside"...I specifically don't want one that says "Beware".

I don't see anything wrong with that! I've got one for the fire department. Well... I had one, but I lost it before it got into the window. I need to get a new one.........

    Interesting.

I never thought of a "Beware" sign as a negative thing at all.  I have a friend who has a friend who had a dog. The dog was kept outside in the fenced in yard. The water guy came to check the meter and ignored the dog.  He got bit and the family got sued. I don't think it's the dogs' fault it bit, someone was coming onto their property unancounced and ignored the dog, who was just doing what dogs do. From what I understand, this dog had no bite history.

To me "beware" signs are just being overly cautious. I think any dog is capable of biting, or some peole are just afraid of dogs and would prefer to know there is a dog on the premise before entering a property.

I have a Beware of Dog sign, and I have also heard about the liability thing.  Not sure about it really.  I've been wanting to get this sign:

Or better yet and more likely (shh, don't tell anybody):

That's another thing, I'd like emergency services to know that there are animals inside, should that ever be needed.

I've got a wooden one that I painted of two collies (a rough and a smooth, of course) playing (in the sort of goofy cartoony style that my pendants are in) and it says "WARNING COLLIES AT PLAY" on it. :P It's going on my fence once i get around to finishing it.

I have some signs "large dogs in this area" that seem to work better than the "no trespassing" signs we had up before.

Do those come in "mutt"? LOL! I've seen those before - super cute, and lets everyone know about your dogs!
