Obama Rescue Dog

    Obama Rescue Dog

    http://network.bestfriends.org/obamafamilydog/news/29375.html

I think this is just wonderful and I think it could (hopefully) go a very long way towards encouraging people to consider rescuing instead of buying. I hope in their search for a pet they learn more about puppy mills and work towards reform in that area as well.

Apparently, Joe Biden promised his wife a "big dog" as well. I hope he also adopts.

Excellant!  I think rescue  is great, of course I have 2 rescue boys right now!  Wink

I sure hope the petition gets Obama's attention!  It would be FANTASTIC if he would get a rescue and what a great NATIONAL boost for the concept.

If he rescued a pittie, wouldn't that say volumes??

As long as he does his research I'm OK with the dog being a rescue or from a breeder.  I another thread there seems to be the implication that he is not fit for a dog because of time, or the dog is being treated like a novelty....I don't know, I think we are too quick to judge.  I know a breeder who placed a dog with a VERY wealthy, prominant person at the top of a certain industry.  Same type of situation where we could argue that he's probably never home, maidstaff spends more time with the dog, bla bla bla but the guy is great to the dog.  He posts on the breeders blog and brings his dog for boarding with a very nice woman living out in the country on her land, not one of those expensive dog resports.  I don't particularly like the guy or his company, but I can't make any assumptions about how he treats the dog.

Well, I think the pup is for the daughter's and they don't strike me as the type of parents who would let the girls shirk their responsibility.  I think it'll be a great learning experience for them.  And the pup will probably be very well-traveled.  Wink

I was following the other thread and agree with the idea that it really has to be based on the individual.  The thing I like about Obama getting a rescue dog (if he does) is the publicity angle for shelter dogs.

I'm pretty sure Obama and any president has a very busy life but it doesn't mean that he and his family don't get some down time and what better way to relax and de-stress than with a dog!  I don't think promising your children a dog as a reward for him running for president was a smart thing to do but it doesn't mean the dog won't have a good home. You are right, it's not possible to judge people based on their wealth or prominence or the lack thereof.  I too have known wealthy people who totally neglect their pets' and I have known poor people that do the same.

I bet Obama may come to regret making that public announcement last night!  LOL

Oh heck, I think they'll be fine so long as they don't invite any foreign heads of state over during housetraining!  LOL!  Big Smile   He'll just need to buy earplugs during crate training.  I can just imagine Arrrooo  Aroooo  Arrrrrrrroooooooo echoing through the halls of the white house.

OMG, I have been laughing and thinking of all the funny possibilities of a new dog in the White House since I read your post!

I think it'd be great if he rescued a dog, but I won't hold it against him for wanting a dog from a breeder.

Off topic: Does anyone remember Bill Clinton's chocolate Lab while he was in the White House? I loved that dog!

Yeah, poor Buddy, he was killed by a car when he was running loose at their New York home.

All I could think of when I heard him say that on the news this AM was, 'Ooooooh snap. iDog's gonna be all over this one!' :P

I think it's fantastic!!!!  The "first dog" when there is one, always gets a lot of attention.  I think it's a wonderful way to showcase the importance of rescue, not that I think there would be anything wrong with them getting a dog from a breeder.  I'm sure it will be well taken care of, surrounded by staff who I'm sure will be able to help care for it and I'm sure Mrs Obama will have more time than her husband for the dog.

As a rescuer I'd never want to depend on the whims of the hired help for the well-being of a dog I placed.  To wit, Buddy the dog:

Buddy, however, suffered the same fate as Clinton's previous dog, a cocker spaniel named Zeke, when he was killed by a car while running loose near the Clinton home in Chappaqua, New York, on January 2, 2002

Well, is it much different than if someone works full time and wants to rescue, but hires a dog walker during the day?  I don't even know if hired staff does help out with pet care for the first family, I was just assuming.  I don't think being with the presidents' family would be the most horrible fate.   I think they should have to go through the same exact evaluation process that others do though, like how they do plan to excercise and care for the dog in their busy lives, just to show they have a plan.
