i was also appalled at the fact that biden was not only running for VP, but also running to maintain his senate seat. that just seems wrong to me. how can you be allowed to run simultaneously for two different positions? not only that but the guy on fox news said that if he won VP the governor would appoint his senate replacement. that seems wrong too.

I'm not sure why that bothers you?  AFAIK, it's the way things have been done since our country started.  Or if not since the very beginning, certainly for many decades.  There's certainly nothing at all unique or unusual about Biden doing it.

it bothers me because the vote has been taken away from the people at this point, and all control is given to the whim of an individual. i am not sure why that doesnt bother you?

I suppose it doesn't bother me at all because the voters know that going into it (or they certainly should).

So, let us all be like McCain, be gracious and do what we can for our country and fellow man.

Very well said. However, that said, did anybody notice during McCain's speech the people in the crowd booing Obama? The election is over. It's now time to support our President- whether you voted for him or not. I thought McCain had a very respectful speech, and I thought Obama had a very sincere, inspirtational speech. Did anybody catch he's getting his daughters a puppy?

I'd just really like to understand where all this fear is coming from and exactly what it is people are so  afraid of.

Change? Not only the change from Bush to Obama but could also be the change of color on top of that it could also be the shift from republican to democrat.....

    Just a guess........

He said many months ago that when he and Michelle sat down with their daughters and talked about his intention to run for president, in order for the girls to give their blessing, they struck a deal that if he won, they would get a puppy.  True or not, I don't know.  Supposedly one (maybe both) of them has allergies, so it would have to be a "hypoallergenic" breed.

They've said they're getting a shelter/rescue dog....we'll see whether that happens and I certainly hope it does.  The last thing they need is a baby puppy - imagine housetraining in the White House lol.

Yes, me three and DH as well.

This election excited me like none has in recent years.  The last time I voted for President, I didn't like the candidate I voted for.  He was the lesser of two evils.  It has been MANY years since I have been "politial" to the extent that I was this year.

Someone said earlier that they had seen shades of Camelot.  Oh, yes, I so agree.  It's probable that many of our members are too young to remember other than through history books what great and grand excitement there was in our country during those years.  I was a youngster when JFK was campaigning, and I remember bouncing up and down in my Dad's recliner when he'd come on TV.  And I remember the sorrow of the nation following that day in Dallas.  Our country came together in that administration in a way that hopefully it will come together again.  The Kennedys were not perfect, not by a long shot, but JFK UNITED this country, and I'm hoping O'Bama will do the same.

When I went to vote yesterday, I stood in line for well over an hour.  The township where I vote is one of the tiniest in the state, and the township hall is an old one room school house.  The line literally went out the door.  The gals working the polls said people had started lining up before 7AM and they had been swamped all day.

I honestly thought that this would be a much closer election.  And again, if we the people, had seen the same John McCain that we saw last night, I think it would have been.  I've said many times that I USED to like McCain.  Last night, I liked him again.

i am curious to see what happens once obama takes office... will he follow through on his promises? will the war in iraq end in 2009 like he promised in his speech when he won the democratic nomination? when are my taxes going down? i am tired of paying high rates for health insurance. when is it going to be more affordable? when is our economy going to turn around? when am i going to be able to buy a car that doesnt run on a petroleum product? is joe biden personally going to come shut down our nuclear power plant and install wind mills? when?

imo jan 21, 2009... obama has a lot of work to do. i hope he is starting to prepare today.

Same here. I didn't like either then. I like McCain and I have the utmost respect for him, but I did not vote for him.

I was also very proud of the youth vote turnout. I'm 23 and I saw soooo many people I went to highschool with voting.

i have no faith in any of our legislative branch, and likely will not vote again. good luck with your government.

Ah, no no no no!  Please don't feel that way!  I came away from this realizing that I'd bought in for far too long to the idea that truly voting the way I believed was "throwing my vote away."

The US is definitely ripe for change.  I don't think what just happened is gonna meet expectations and I fear there will be some disappointment in two years.  Throughout history, the party that stands where the Republicans do, has expired periodically and has been replaced. I believe that it's about to happen again, though it will be a generation-long process as usual.

The question is, what will be the new party?  More left?  More right?  The Dems cannot pass the buck, they cannot fail to disappoint (it's simply a law of politics, I'm not saying I HOPE this happens - remember I'm a poli sci person).  The question is whether their activities will energize the opposition of the left or the right more.

Unless the economy takes another dive bomb, probably the issue will be the war two years from now.  Our new commander in chief cannot snap his fingers and pull out the troops on 21 Jan 2009.  The Libertarians will have a strong draw in their consistent anti-war but pro-soldier, pro Constitution stance.  If the economy continues to go south, probably a more leftist party will emerge in response.

I'm thrilled!  Big Smile  I think McCain's speech was first class.  I think he's a great guy.  I think he just made some mistakes during his campaign and lost control of it to his party.  I didn't agree with his plans or views but I respect him a great deal.

Ditto, though I'm not sure I'd blame the loss entirely on him and his campaign (or the Palin choice).  Everyone I know voted the way I expected them to vote over a year ago.  The campaigns didn't seem to change people's opinions much, maybe just polarize things more and push some dems even farther left and some republicans farther right.  I think McCain just lost, not because of anything specific HE did, but people wanted a change, a democrat, Obama.  I hope that makes sense.....
