McCain was very gracious, his speech impressed me. I wish I'd seen more of that side of him...it was nice. I wish him well.

    Ditto.

I totally agree Liesje.  I don't think at this point, that, barring something extraordinary, that anything could have prevented a win, and a decisive win, last night.  People are pretty annoyed and the bank fiasco and gas prices were just the nail in the coffin for the Republicans.

I think McCain would have made a better Pres than a lot of people gave him credit for, during this campaign, but for some reason he decided not to show THAT man to the people who could have chosen to put him there.  Oh well.  My feeling is that if you can't manage a campaign, you don't deserve public office.  He lost to Bush twice, for Pete's sake.  He's a clever man but he's oddly deficient in his choices in administration.

So, to the winner goes the spoils.  Which by the way is the principle which governs the situation with Biden's senatorial seat.  It dates back to Jackson.  It's a bit smarmy when you have been in office for a million years as Biden has - normally it's done instead, when the Senator is relatively young - but it's just another political choice.  As Myra said it will be up to the voters to decide whether they've been given the "bait and switch" in six years.

The Obamas definitely are getting a puppy.  A shelter dog?  I don't know - that's hard to believe - generally when someone says puppy it means they are going shopping at a breeder.  Usually a dogless Pres puts the finger to the wind and selects one of the top ten AKC breeds.  It didn't work out well for the last Presidential dog, so I'm not all that excited by the idea.

Yes, I agree, the country NEEDED a change.  But, I do wish that we had seen more of last nights McCain than we saw during the campaigne.

I was really disappointed that McCains supporters showed so little class, booing O'Bama.  The man himself was a class act last night, his supporters, disappointingly, not so much.

Not wanting to start anything, but could someone please explain to me just what it is about Obama that has so many people terrified?  I was  talking to my (conservative Republican) friend on the phone tonight and I think she's preparing for armageddon. I'd just really like to understand where all this fear is coming from and exactly what it is people are so  afraid of.

    Joyce

I happen to be conservative politically but I voted for Obama because I felt he could make a change in our country.  Not to mention that McCain's choice for VP left me questioning his judgement.

I don't understand all the fear among the right wing.  I also have friends who act like they need to stock up on ammo and hunker down for the next four years!!  They ask me "aren't you scared?" and I respond that they need to turn off the TV and the talk radio and they will find that this country will be just fine.

Throughout history, the party that stands where the Republicans do, has expired periodically and has been replaced. I believe that it's about to happen again, though it will be a generation-long process as usual.

Why are all the dems saying this?   46% of the country still voted for McCain.  Obviously there are still some republicans out there.

I'm thrilled!  Big Smile  I think McCain's speech was first class.  I think he's a great guy.  I think he just made some mistakes during his campaign and lost control of it to his party.  I didn't agree with his plans or views but I respect him a great deal.

Ditto, though I'm not sure I'd blame the loss entirely on him and his campaign (or the Palin choice).  Everyone I know voted the way I expected them to vote over a year ago.  The campaigns didn't seem to change people's opinions much, maybe just polarize things more and push some dems even farther left and some republicans farther right.  I think McCain just lost, not because of anything specific HE did, but people wanted a change, a democrat, Obama.  I hope that makes sense.....

That does make sense.  I was speaking more to my opinion as I watched things progress.  I was actually planning to vote for him once Hillary was out, but as I paid more attention to the campaign after the primaries, what I saw was his campaign became more and more negative and fear mongering (VA was inundated with the "Dangerous" commercials about Obama) and during the interviews and debates whenever he (McCain) was asked a direct question about an issue, he'd start his response with "Well, Obama did.....X".  After a while it really drove me bonkers, I felt I never heard a direct answer, just finger pointing.  Once he chose Palin, I was done.  Maybe I'm wearing blinders, I just don't see him as the kind of guy who would deliberately take the campaign in that negative direction, it didn't feel true to me after watching him for many years, it seemed a departure from the guy he usually came across as.  I still see him as a more stand up guy than what I saw during the campaign.

I don't think there's any Democrats saying this, that I've heard.  I'm not sure, I don't really listen to much news/TV - talk radio yes but not much of that either.  It's just the pattern that seems to be developing.  I don't see that the Republican party successfully is conveying any particular stand on any issue people actually think pertains to government at this point.  I voted for McCain and as I say I think he would have made a fine Pres.

The fact is that the Republicans came darned close to becoming a non-entity in a governing sense, this time around.  Just a few more seats going to the Dems would have meant they could do anything they wanted, without considering those 46% of us who voted on the other side.  The US has a two party system - any party that loses that much power WILL be replaced very shortly.

It's not that our views are going to be trampled underfoot - it's that some party will move to position itself to better match those views.

But I'm curious to know whether anyone has heard anyone else saying this.  That would be funny since I'm about as far from a "Dem" as possible and still be in the tradition of American politics.

Sandra I really hope things get better for you and your husband.  Patrick's dad is still driving a truck at near 70 and with chronic emphysema - they've only given him a couple of years on that and thus he will most likely spend that behind the wheel.  Though, we are hoping to have much, much longer than that with him!  :D

We're looking at spending quite a bit on  my deal though thank goodness it could have been much more.  Apparently the insurance company considers this a semi-emergency.

I too believe the best use of charitable money is spent privately but there's a deeply ingrained belief in the US that the Feds should "do something" when problems arise.  And that will never end - the bureaucracy will only expand itself as bureaucracies are inclined to do.

I actually think we'll see very little change for our personal lives. I hope I'm wrong and we see huge, positive changes, but I guess I'm just cynical about what politicians say they'll do and what they actually do. Some of the plans that were proposed by both sides are probably just wishful thinking. Still, we vote for the one whose wishful thinking most closely matches our own. I'm pretty conservative (and no, I'm not rich) and didn't vote for Obama, but I truly hope that he's a huge success for all of our sakes. I'd love to say in 4 yrs from now - "wow, this has been great! Let's go for another 4"

On a side note - our new Mayor-elect was heavily endorsed by the fire fighters union because he promised his support, specifically regarding budget cuts and layoffs. Since then, he's said he may not be able to keep some of the promises he made. Really??? Hmm

My sister, God love her, is already planning to hunker down.  She predicts a disaster for our nation.  She fears for the future for her grandchildren.  Funny, that's how I felt should the Republicans have taken it all.

It amazes me sometimes that we are related.  We are such polar opposites in so darned many things.  Medical marijuana?  Gosh, they can take a pill.  Let me tell you as someone who has used BOTH for pain relief, the smoking kind is far faster and far more effective. Stem cell research?  From embryo's created by IVF that are in excess of what are wanted/will be used?  Murder.  Pure and simple.  O'Bama?  Disaster for our nation.

I fear that people like her, and a LOT of folks DID vote for McCain, will not do as O'Bama has asked and HELP get our nation back where it belongs.

The latest she told me this morning is that the radio "experts" are saying that O'Bama is not a US citizen despite being born in Hawaii, because his MOTHER was born in Kenya and might not have been a US citizen when he was born.  Sigh.  Does it never end?

I agree! I'm excited for some change and I really hope Obama does a fabulous job. Either candidate would have been welcomed by me at this point. We just need something different and we surely showed it last night! What a great sign it is that we can overcome such a history to elect a man like Obama. I mean, I knew it was coming, but I was still so happy and thrilled to see him win. McCain had a fabulous speech. I really wish he'd stayed true to his roots instead of pandering to his party- I would have voted for him that way. He is a remarkable man and as Obama mentioned, we should all be grateful for all McCain has sacrificed for this country. Both candidates were very gracious and have my utmost respect.
