    Mindless Chatter - Weekend

Off to work as usual for me, but I thought I'd pop in to start a thread before heading out.  It looks like it's going to be a pretty day today. :)

We had a total of 5 trick or treaters last night - just two groups, but Z enjoyed greeting them in her pumpkin costume and we now have tons of candy left for us to eat. :D

I was eating my usual apple cinnamon oatmeal this morning when I got a piece of something that tasted disgusting. :P  Stiil have no idea what it was, but I spit it out and threw the rest of the bowl away.  Had to make another bowl which means I'm running behind schedule. :P  Boo.

we had a total of 12 trick or treaters last night, however, 8 of them came from the houses on either side of us.  blah.  But i did give out two huge handfuls each of candy to two little boys hehe their father had their lab dressed as a prisoner, with a hat that said "bad dog" lol the dog was sooo sweet!!

Even though we live in a little town, there sure are a lot of kids. So, Halloween here is a big deal. And they do it even if there's school the next day. Last night was game night for the Bulldogs but that didn't slow down the parade of little monsters. So, rather than have to open the door a million times, I sat out in the driveway with my telescope looking at Venus, the Moon, and a few other things. Ran out of candy about 8:15 and people kept coming by until a little after 9:00.

You know, it's so funny. I have a dog. We live in a town where the team name is the Bulldogs. And our back flowerbed has Canis in it. There seems to be a theme, here.

We  didn't get very many trick-or-treaters, probably because it was raining.  The few we did get were about 11/12 and up.  Now I have a big bowl of candy left over, but at least I had the good sense not to buy chocolate.  I'm not so tempted by twizzlers, skittles and laffy taffy.

I took Nikon to my parents b/c they live in a better neighborhood.  So far I can't find anything he's scared of!  Random people wearing scary masks, sometimes even scary to me and he doesn't care, he runs right up to everyone.  Lots of little kids and toddlers.  Good stuff (for him).

This morning he got two shots and a mircochip.  He actually threw a screaming fit getting his temp taken and didn't notice any of the shots.  Good thing since tomorrow he's getting his ear tattoo.  The vet seemed to think Nikon's going to be HUGE but I disagree.  His mother is at the top of the standard, which for bitches is about 80lbs and 25" or so, and his father is small (and by small I mean correct).  Because he is German he has much more bone, so maybe that's what the vet is seeing.  His legs and paws are already as thick as Kenya's.

Pardon me for being blonde. I just noticed in your sig, the lineage of both Nikon and Kenya. Same breeder or different branches of big line? Just curious.

We ran our errands and visited with some of the rescue people at Petco. Meanwhile the south part of the Home Depot looked like byb row.

Got a chance to educate a co-worker when I was at the grocery store. He's thinking about getting a dog. I mentioned the shelter. $44 gets you the dog (as in legal ownership), necessary shots, and spay/neuter. He and his wife haven't decided, yet, but hopefully, I have given them something to think about.

The fireworks are CRAZY outside right now, they keep making my house vibrate.  Ben is asleep next to me, not even twitching when the huge BOOMS echo through the night.  Thank you Ben, and whatever I might say when you steal my socks, you are a good dog.

Not blonde!  Yes, same breeder (sort of), different lines.  The breeder used to breed and show American line GSDs, but there are problems with their temperament, drive, and structure that only seemed to be getting worse.  I believe she was looking to produce a more moderate dog with better drive and fewer genetic health problems.  She did a phase with incorporating working lines into her program but has settled on German lines, all of her bitches are now directly from Karl Fuller/Kirschental (Fuller is one of the most respected GSD breeders and fanciers in the history of the breed).  Kenya is pure working lines, east and west German.  Nikon is west German show lines (sire) and Kirschental lines (dam).  Kenya was bred in the USA (father imported from Germany), Nikon was bred in Germany (father is German, mother was originally imported and brought back to Germany to find an appropriate stud to compliment her strengths and hopefully clean up her faults).

Thanks for refreshing my memory. I think he'll be a great dog.

Thanks I sure hope so!  So far he's been good.  Potty training is so-so and he can be very demanding when he's wide awake, but he sleeps well at night (he's so quiet now I have to set alarms and get him up to potty), all three dogs get along, and he's been really good about not biting/nipping people and chewing his toys not my stuff.

We didn't get one single trick or treater last night.  I blame the park owner.  He doesn't have any street lights in here, so its pretty dark.  Well, that and the porch light is disconnected somehow.  Tried to figure it out yesterday, but no luck.

Kale's costume was fun.  I love his hair, even though its a little old for him, and rather drastic.  We're leaving it for the week anyway, since next friday is Wacky Hair Day at his school.  I think it should qualify.  My niece did it, and she loves to experiment with her colours and her new clipper.  (she owns a salon so she always has things to experiment with and Kale and my nephew Mike are frequently guinea pigs)

Kali was a little witch and I played around with some colour streaks while Kale was getting his hair done.  Kali had pink, blue and purple streaks in her hair.  Wash out stuff though.  It turned her bath bright blue!  Hehehe.  She only trick or treated for a half hour last night, then she wouldn't walk anymore so Tyler brought her home and he and Kale finished off the night.

Kelci was a banana.  I'm going to try to post pics later.

Trick or Treating here is from 6 to 8.  Its governed by the town emergency siren.  Its nice because at 8 I can quit answering the door and not feel guilty.  Not that it mattered last night.  I have entirely too much candy now.  And, most of it is chocolate.  Somebody save me.

we only had a few kids - well in comparison to last year so we have left over candy - not what I needed.  Anyway Bugsy was on fire with the doorbell going every few minutes and then after I took him outside and back in he totally chilled out.  Some kids rang it about five times after 8 (which is our neighborhood cutoff) and he never even batted and eye.  I will never figure him out.

We just had our last class and the instructor did private consultations for each of us.  She was very positive about Bugs and did say that in umpteen years of dog training and working in rescue she had NEVER met a more powerful dog than B LOL Tell me something i don't know.  She does feel that he can do therapy work and has the temperment and personality for it.  That pleased me as I was loosing hope.  She also said he was an absolute one of a kind - with a wry smile on her face ha ha Anyway it was a good experience

    Good dog Ben!

    Good dog Ben!

He says "thanks aunty Karen!"...or he would, if he wasn't still asleep.  He's edged very slowly (inches over the past few hours) so that he's now mostly up on my lap.  Lovely, snuggly and warm but I am starting to get desperately thirsty LOL.

ETA:  Well I got my glass of water, which was good.  On the downside...someone please tell me I am not the only one who starts researching something on the net and doesn't know when to stop.  I follow link after link until I stop actually absorbing the info.  My brain hurts.

Been there done that, for decades. It started with books. Actually, it started before I could read. My mother told me that I used to pick out a volume here and there from the encyclopedia and start looking. I learned how to read before kindergarten (age 5, here.) My father taught me. The first word I learned to read was motel. We were driving somewhere and I asked him what the sign said so he helped me figure out the letters and how to say the word from reading it. Before I knew it, I could read and knew that he was driving a Ford Galaxy 500. I believe that was around 1968, early 1969. I was born in 1964.

Don't worry, it never stops. The insatiable need to read and the brain strain from being full, at least for the moment.
