2 dogs, bro and sis, when/how to prevent Caligula/Nero puppies ???

The OP asked 1. Am looking for suggestions on ways to do this from experienced folks.

I communicated my real life experience and I thought my last statement was a commentary that this option is not good choice.

The original line I quoted is in direct contradiction to that.

    3. What NON-medical techniques/methods/handling, etc. can be used for either dog ?

    4. What would be the consequences in the unfortunate event that brother and sister mated and produced offspring, and what to do then ?

Belly bands for males along with bitches' britches for females can help if you catch the heat soon enough.  Silent heats (no discharge) could make that difficult.

    Example britches:
    [linkhttp://www.amazon.com/Small-Bitches-Britches-Red-Fits/dp/B0006N9DNG]www.amazon.com/Small-Bitches-Britches-Red-Fits/dp/B0006N9DNG[/link]

Double crating (a crate inside of a crate) of the female may be advisable.  Some males will chew through plastic crates and/or break teeth on metal crates.  Some breeders simply do not keep males around their intact females because the males go a bit nuts and are very, very persistant/destructive when one of the females is in heat.  Some males will even stop eating and lose weight.

If offspring were produced, the chances of recessive traits showing up in at least some of the pups is high.  Possible results include:
    (a)  death of pup in utero with possible septic results
    (b)  death of pup shortly after birth
    (c)  physical deformities
    (d)  long term internal organ problems
    (e)  skeletal issues such as HD
    (f)  any of the other genetic problems in the breed's gene pool.

If the pups reach 8-10 weeks without issues requiring that they be PTS, the new homes should be advised to acquaint themselves with all of the genetic problems of the breed.  Placing the pups in homes with children is probably not a good idea due to the questionable health/lifespan of the pups.

Is this the kind of info that you were looking for?

You may not have to do anything. The female may not allow it and the male may respect the female's wishes.

Your bitch is very large, though. She probably communicated very well to dogs who were likely smaller than her. She also had cystic ovaries. From someone who has cystic ovaries, it HURTS like a .... I dunno. It hurts a LOT to ovulate, and it hurts a lot when a cyst ruptures. I can't say that I have any desire to "breed", either. That probably isn't the norm for someone my age, just as it probably isn't the norm for a bitch in heat.

My advice would apply to the dogs' mental status. I cannot imagine how frustrating it would be to have hormones driving you to do something, and be physically blocked from that. Their instinct is to breed, within the pack. The alpha dog and alpha bitch should mate and produce puppies that the entire pack would protect. Of course, we've shaken things up a bit with selective breeding. IMO, keeping intact animals in the same household and never allowing them to mate is likely to shorten their lives just with the STRESS it causes them. Allowing them to mate, as brother and sister, would likely land you with a litter of pups with serious issues. It isn't something I'm willing to risk, and it's something to seriously, seriously consider from ALL standpoints if you're wanting to try it. Think of their emotions, their mental state during her heats, and the physical risks involved to both of them (with him trying to escape and the possibility of her becoming pregnant with his pups).

BTW, we had a Poodle breeder on this board (I'm sure she's still around) who would put Onesies and diapers on her bitches, and Onesies on her dogs, when she didn't want them to mate. It worked. You'd still have to suprivise them, closely, and take them outside to potty, seperately, though. It'd still be frustrating, for them, never to be able to tie.

    1. Am looking for suggestions on ways to do this from experienced folks.

    2. What medical techniques are available for male other than castration ? Seems that some vas deferens method should be available, maybe similiar to those used on men.

There is vasectomy but very few vets do this and if they do, it often costs more than a neuter.

    2. What medical techniques are available for female ?

    Spaying.

    3. What NON-medical techniques/methods/handling, etc. can be used for either dog ?

For the bitch, I would suggest Onesies or toddler underwear with a maxi pad. This is primarily to prevent her from bleeding all over the house. It may serve as a mating deterrent or it may not. Crating when you can't keep an eye on her is recommended and no matter what, keeping an eye on her at all times and not allowing her off leash and supervised potty times if you have a yard.

For the male, keeping him crated in a separate room and under no circumstances, allowing him any contact with the bitch while she's in heat. A lot of people choose to board their intact males while the bitch is in heat.

    4. What would be the consequences in the unfortunate event that brother and sister mated and produced offspring, and what to do then ?

Well that would depend on their pedigrees. Do you know what lurks behind them? The breeding can accentuate the positive or it can accentuate the negative. While inbreeding can be used in a breeding program, a brother/sister breeding is usually never done because it's too close of a relation.

If they did breed, you have 2 options. You either allow her to whelp the litter or you abort/spay her. If you allow her to whelp then you must take responsibility for the pups as would any responsible breeder and make sure you properly place them in the right home and sell them on spay/neuter contracts.

I am curious though, and I fear you may jump down my throat for asking, but why are you keeping these 2 dogs intact? Do you plan on participating in conformation where you'd have to have intact dogs?

By the way, I love the name Caligula. I had a cat named Caligula. I don't know if I'd give a female that name considering that the real Caligula was a male and a total psychopath. [;)]

As far as I can see, there were two posters that had relevent experience to the OP, so far.  The two being Xerxes and myself.  I respect Xerxes's observation and I believe it.  My observations are also valid despite the experience not supporting the majority here.  I have already stated my qualification to the post of the dog being large and capable of detracting the males, no matter how persisstent the males.  I don't see a need to reiterate that.  I have also stated my experience with the dog attending an agility class and how the males reacted.  Unless anyone can provide a reconciliation between the two, my experience is an option to the OP, although not the best as I stated.

Added:  And since I have received PMs on this, I want to add the dog's medical condition was late in life.  I have had the dog since puppyhood and her behavior has been consistenent through her life.

I don't think the OP's named her dogs Caligula and Nero.  Both Roman Emperors were into incest relationships with their mothers and sisters.

I don't know.  You know I don't know everything.  But if I recall from my Roman latin language studies, neither had children from incest acts but both were into it.

I think the OP has left the building because the OP got red cyber ink.
