Ouchy (Thor) - (Attention: small wound pics)

Sunday afternoon I saw his toe red and swelled. We had a nice walk that morning and DH afterwards remembered two or three days before, we saw a little blood spot in the floor, but Thor was perfect and we checked his paws at the moment and they seem to look good. So we went to the vet the next day. Thor wasn't limping but he is like that, he wouldn't let you know he is in pain.

The vet we met wasn't there, it was another and he didn't make a full exam for start, he didn't asked if Thor was limping ot let me told him what he had been doing, nothing. He went directly to the paw and looked at every angle, no marks, no cuts, just the swelled and red bulge . Thor wasn't amused and DH had to hold him tight. The vet said he wanted to stick a needle to see if there was an infection or pus and he put a muzzle on Thor... first time I see Thor crying and trying to climb over me. Never had a vet visit like that! I mean, Thor has been always a vet fanatic, even with the stomach surgeries he was crazy and happy to see his vet and the techs, even the secretary.

Nothing came out of the wound and the Dr. prescribed antibiotics (Amoxil 500mg - 2 every 12 hours) no advise about if it has on the stomach. He also told me to take Thor to the river for him to soak the paw in cold water. He said if Thor doesn't get better we have to take him again and the vet will give him anesthesia to open the wound and see what's in there Indifferent We have been going to the river and soaking the paw in cold water + the meds. A friend at the dog park told me to put polysporin to help to prevent infection, I bought it and put a little over the bulge. But with the needle pinch, we have some blood coming out from time to time...

I feel awful, I feel like I shouldn't have let that vet to touch Thor. I don't know maybe I'm overthinking everything or maybe I miss a lot our other vets and friends and family Sad The worst thing is that I was so stressed about Thor crying (first time, really I have heard him crying) that I didn't asked the vet about the meds side effects or if it's good idea to make Thor wear a socks or... I don't know, I really wanted to get out there.

So now I ask you guys what do you think and to take a look on the paw. For bigger pic clic here

And Thor's attitude when I'm cleaning it:

PD: This is an english language question. What is the correct way to call the fingers in the paw: "toes", "fingers" or none? It depends if I'm talking about front paws or back paws? Thanks!

    Toes.

I have no advice on his toe though.  Wish I could help.  Callie is here though, I'm sure she or someone else will be along, if not before I post this, then soon.  Give him some snuggles from me.  Poor Thor.

How strange another dog at our dog park tonight had been at the vet today with what looks like the same thing on his paw.

Could it be a bite of some kind?  Maybe a spider bite even.

Ouchie Thor!! I am so sorry that vet was mean - I think even vets can get too nervous around large dogs.  My vets are very nice but I always help them with Bugsy, even though he loves them and is very happy there. Once when he wasn't even a year the vet tech was really rough with him - she was visibly worried about having to keep a hold of him and that was the last time I handed him over to them.  I like that they would rather I did it and they allow that.

anyway it might be a bite or it could be a cyst.  He has had a lot of changes in his diet/environment etc.  He could've been licking at it too.  I'm sure he will be fine.

I am sooooooooo sorry again about the vet - Thor is such a sweetie.  Talk to them next time and let them know that you or DH can control him so they don't need to muzzle him or be rough.

Give my boy some belly rubs!

Owie, Thor.  It looks like it could be a bite of some sort to me.  I'm so sorry that the vet was mean to you.  You are the biggest sweetie pie I know.  I hope the other vet in that office is nicer to you.  Tell your mama to give you some snuggles from me.

Snuggles and belly rubs delivered! He lets me touch the wound without complaint. I hope the meds are working, but I see that thing the same, maybe I shouldn't stare at it until tomorrow.

I don't know if it's a bite, it could be, but the center is where the vet pinch him. If it was a spider the meds are enough to help him? And if it's a cyst? ...

I've had this on dogs of mine in the past and just assumed it was an allergic reaction to an insect bite.  I often try to soak with epsom salts and a little betadine to draw stuff out, but never went to a vet for it, and it took several days to go away.  It looks a bit painful, especially to stick a needle into.

Interdigital cyst would be a possibility I know Bulldogs get them pretty often and perhaps other Mastiff types do too. I unfortunately think they can be a rather difficult issue to clear up but if you Google that term I used, therapies from people with Bulldogs should come up. I recall Epsom salts being used...in WARM soaks.

I'd not put his paws in the river, personally..open wounds and water that may or may not be clean or have this or that organism in it...you just never know. If you want to cool it...use ice packs or ice water soaks.

I hope it is only a bite and not a cyst...and no matter what it turns out to be I hope Thor is feeling much better, very very soon.

OMG I google it, read about it, saw some pictures and those things look alike Thor's. But the thing that bothers me more is about the treatment: nothing like the vet said... and he also sticked a needle in it and poor Thor crying in pain! The worst thing is that I was so proud of Thor standing in the cold water like a champ just for me and he got the command so fast!

I feel horrible, but I did what I'm used to do: I went to the vet. If there is something strange and I haven't seen it before, I go to the vet. Thor has never had allergies and he has never have been bitten and never has had anything like this and I never heard about a dog with something like that... and I'm rambling. I can't wait for DH to be here and show this to him.

Thank you very much Gina, I really hope it's no a cyst but allergies... anyway I'm really grateful you opened my mind.

I think, from now I will let you guys know first. At least you all know Thor's stories, background, eating rubber balls fetiche and else. And you also know we are new here (1 month and 10 days) and we have had a lot of changes. Tomorrow I'm going to buy the Epson salts. BTW no idea what they are.

look in the first aid section of a drug store. They should be in a milk container looking thing...not a jug but a cardboard type container. Cheap stuff which is good lol. Should be with bandages and peroxide etc.

Charlie had something that looked like that about 1 1/2 months ago.  I put some neosporin (anti infection cream you can get at the drug store) on it and covered it up with a sock so he wouldn't get to the meds.  In about two or three days it started to clear up.  I don't know if we did the right thing, but it worked.

Oh Thor!  I just wanna give you a hug you big sweet love.  I'm sorry that vet was not gentle w/ you.  And what a good boy you've been letting your mom look at the ouch and standing in the water.

Calinisma, I hope it can get healed up soon.

Poor Thor!! I hope he feels better soon!

If it's a spider bite the antibiotics WILL help.  And same if it's a cyst.

The hard thing is that it's SO easy to let something like this go thinking it's nothing.  BUT they can get cancer IN a toe.  Muffin the Intrepid had this swollen toe that would come and go - no big deal, not painful ... just occasionally I would see this toe get pink and a bit swollen.  Went on about 18 months with me soaking, etc. - it would get better then worse ...

Later he had a tumor removed from his belly that was cancerous.  We did a zillion tests (mostly because we knew they hadn't gotten "clear margins" in the surgery because there was no more tissue TO take) ... and later after we had gone to the University vet school up at Gainesville, they had done aspirates and ultrasounds looking all over his body to see if it had metastacized and as a total after-thought we had them aspirate that toe because it was sore looking again.

The toe **itself** was a tumor!   Not a tumor on the toe, but because a toe is so self-contained the entire toe was actually a tumor and had to be removed.

Later they told me that the tumor under his belly was actually NOT the 'primary' tumor but the TOE was and that what had gone to his belly had metastacized from the toe.

THIS was likely what the vet was looking for -- infection or mast cell.  But this is why he was so 'on' it and it's likely not a bad thing.

Next time you go to the vet take a bag of some irresistible treats.  In fact take two bags -- some for the receptionist and techs to give him but one bag with a few treats for the VET, himself, to give Thor.

Vets don't like to be the bad guys.  Treats give them the opportunity to make a good bond and "make up" with him.
