Do you eat first or feed your dog first?

I know some people believe that there is great significance to the dog about who gets their meal first... but honestly, I just don't believe it. Rascal gets his breakfast after his morning potty trip, and he gets his dinner around 6-7 pm. Usually that's around when we eat, so I'll put down his food to keep him occupied for a bit while we're eating. But sometimes he gets his before, and sometimes afterwards. I haven't noticed any differences whatsoever in Racal's behavior whether he eats before or after we do.

Hard to say Ben gets his "first" in the morning since it's a bit hit-and-miss as to whether we eat breakfast at all.  DH feeds him when he gets downstairs in the morning.  In the evening, Ben eats after because we take him for a run at the park when DH gets home, and I don't want Ben eating too soon after that, so we cook/eat while Ben cools off, he's ready to eat by the time we're done.

usually feed the dogs first. Not always. Usually feed my "alpha dog" after I feed the other dogs because her "feeding station" just happens to be the furthest from the kitchen. The dogs don't care.

In the mornings Samantha and I will go feed the dogs and cats. They all eat outside so I guess really they dont know they get fed first. I have to do that first thing in the morning cuz otherwise I get on this forum and start reading stuff and well you know what happens after that.Stick out tongue After feeding them we come inside and I give Samantha something to eat if she's hungry.

At night on weekdays we eat first then the dogs. During the weekends when JJ is off it I cook supper when he gets hungry. So most of the time then the animals get fed first then.

I feed Cheyanne last also. But because if I feed her first she gulps her food down and will go eat the cats food while I am feeding Lillie and Kujo. She will follow me around while I feed the others waiting for me to get to her.

Maybe if I had less of a dominant breed I wouldnt pay so much attention but I make a point to eat first in teh a.m and evening. In the a.m even if its just some yogurt or a english muffin I eat first.

In the p.m. they eat after us also even if dinner time is later then normal. They do get snacks during the day though. When Rory was a pup and when Primo first came to live with us I made them sit outside the sliding glass door and watch us eat before they were allowed inside while we were eating and if at anytime they began to beg it was back outside they went. I cant stand beggers.

If they get any scraps (which is seldom) they are never fed from the table, they are always fed in their bowls. Rory's is inside and Primo's is outside.

Joyce I am pretty envious that Max just goes with the flow - Bugsy is soooo not like that - has a schedule and wants to keep to it at all times

If Max wasn't a "go with the flow" dog, we'd be driving each other nuts.  He'll sleep as long as there's a human in the bed and sometimes longer.  He stretches, yawns and gets up when I come out of the shower.  I think if I stayed in bed all day, he'd be right there with an occasional trip to the yard. Smile

How nice! My aussies are go with the flow most of the time, but they do have their limits. They know that if I say "go on" and I roll over to sleep again, then it's not time to get up yet. They have their subtle ways of showing their restlessness though. Dakota otoh is very much a schedule dog. She must eat at certain times or else I get an ear full.

Ahh dont you love having a talking dog. JJ brother used to have a Malamute that cracked me up. We would be dragging the water bucket down to the horses, when we had horses, or fixing the fence for the hundredth time and she would follow us giving us instructions it seemed. She never seemed to have anything to say until someone would start doing some work around the house and then she would stand there and give her 2 cents worth.

Yep lol She tells me how it is on a daily basis :)

In the AM, I make the food and then get ready for work.  I feed the 2 puppies and then take the 3 adults for their walk.  When I get back, I feed the 3 adults and eat MY breakfast, and head out to work.

In the PM, I try to feed the dogs no later than 6PM, so depending on how my evening is progressing, I might eat before OR after, but they tend to eat on time.

Indy mine is pretty much like yours. Although I don't have a  "real" job (animals are a full time job right?) in the morning I feed them first, then eat something quick or chug down an instant breakfast drink. Then I feed in evening before our dinner, and then night time feed after our dinner. Sometimes I have the food prepared ahead of time and other times I have to get up earlier to prepare it in the morn otherwise it will cut into their morning hours exercise time.

Our schedule is crazy around here.  I used to eat first with DH and then we'd feed her.  But, now DH is home so he eats whenever and I'm working second shift.  So, she eats around the same time every day but it's hard to say if someone will have eaten first or even in her site these days.  She's a go with the flow girl too.

My dogs eat pretty much at the same time as us.  Since they eat in their crates, I just find it easier to crate them and give them their food as we sit down to eat.  This way we have no dogs sitting under the highchair for a certain little someone to feed her dinner to.

Weekday AM's is the only time my dogs have a "regular" time, because we have to get out of the house. In the evening they eat when we eat and that can be almost any time. They do make faces at us as what we call dinnertime rolls around (7:30PM) but if we are not ready to feed for whatever reason they wait. They get over it. On the weekends they usually get restless 7 -7:30AM to eat. DH gets up and feeds them, sometimes comes back to bed. When he was gone though, they didn't wake me I slept until about 8:30 once I started my pre wake up restlessness, they came over to say good morning. They would be cute until I would get up, let them out and when they come in it is breakfast.
