    Ticks and Breed question

Hello again everyone. First off I would like to say my family and Katrina are doing well. She's smart as a whip, but looks so darn doopy with her floppy ears and big puppy dog eyes. I love her to peices, but anyhow...
I was wondering whats the best Tick medication to use for her. This is very important as we take her for 5 miles walks in the woods at least once a week (Not counting the other walks throughout the week.) I am throughly disgusted with this supposed tick and flea treatment we bought. It's Hertz brand. We were going to get her Frontline, but the vet was closed (Sunday) the day we decided to buy her treatments. So we went to fleet farm and bought the Hertz stuff  seeing how that would work. Apperenatly NOT well as she's already had 1 tick and myself has had 2. Odd, because I never had them before we got her..so I KNOW she's bringing them in the house with her. *UGH, scratches all over again* Okay, Im better now. :P I heard Advaticks (or however you spell it) ISNT water proof, but heard thats the best to by from many people. I need something water proof, so I thought Frontline, but heard that itr didnt work as good at the other stuff. Info please :)

Also, here's another pic of Katrina...as much as I WANT to believe she's a pure bred, Im starting to see she's probably not. Ah well, she's still gorgous to me anyhow. Just kinda curious what everyone thinks she might have in her. She's suppose to be a pure bred Wiem, but I NEVER seen the markings of her. I know fawn Wiem's exist, and I know blue wiems extistm but the two combined? I was told  by a couple it IS possible, but others Ive talked to said no *shrugs* Just curious really. :)
    Thanks again :)

10 people looked and not a single person to reply? *sighs to herself* You guys MUST use some type of tick repellent, please do say what. :)

I use Frontline Plus.  It works well for my dogs and they spend a lot of time in the water in the spring/summer/fall and it is still effective.

I've never used any of the other products available because I personally think that Frontline works the best.

You can buy it online for much less than you'd pay at your vet's office so if you are comfortable buying it online I would do so.  I buy it from [linkhttp://www.petshed.com]www.petshed.com[/link] which is in Australia.  Same product, different packaging, cost significantly less than the US or Canadian places you can buy it from.  If you're uncomfortable with the different packaging (by different I mean that the product is not labeled for us in the US and the amount are in metric) you can buy from Entirelypet, Drs Foster & Smith and also dog.com.  I think dog.com just went to free shipping over $75.

Your dog does not look like Weim to me, maybe a mix.  Looks like some sort of hound to me.

I think maybe you didn't get responses because the question of who uses what tick repellent has been discussed ad infinitum in the Pests and Parasites section of the Health forum as well as a couple of other times here.  If you go to that section you'll see what everyone uses and why and some lively discussions about it!!

Good luck and get your dog something that will work!

I would say frontline as well.  I honestly DON'T use anything at all because it's not a problem with us.  Ticks OR fleas.

Katrina is very striking, whatever her breed!

I use Advantage during the warm months, but we haven't had tick or flea problems here for probably 6-8 yrs.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

The ticks are terrible here , and I've always used Frontline Plus. Never tried anything else. I only use it in tick season, we've never had flea problems.

I use Frontline Plus and am considering applying it to me!!!!
We walk Molly on a wooded trail about 5x a week and I haven't yet found a tick on her. Me a different story but I think they are leaving her, due to the Frontline, and finding their way to me.
    Stuff works really good.

I'm thinking of using it too. It works great on the dogs, but i'm unprotected. Uhh... where would a human apply it? Do I put it between my shoulder blades, cause I think I would spill it all down my back if I tried to do it myself.

I use frontline plus.  I tried Biospot and Zoe had a bad reaction.  From what I hear, that is normal and that biospot is terrible and should not be sold.  I have had no probs. with frontline plus.

As for breed... I am sure she's not but on first look, she looked like Zoe, a dachshund!  But, Zoe's snout is not super long like most dachsies.  Katrina is very pretty though!

I use Frontline Plus and have never had a problem. As far as your dog goes, she is an absolutely beautiful dog, no question about that. In an earlier thread, you seemed to take offense when a few of us, myself in particular, questioned her breed. For the record, I was not trying to be unkind....but the person who charges a lot of money for a purebred dog and sells unsuspecting comsumers a mutt is unethical at best, a criminal at worst. If you paid for a purebred Weim and received papers on the dog, you may want to ask a reputable breeder or your vet if they consider the dog to be a Weim. If not, you should call the breeder and demand your money back, report him to the BBB, the local breed club, and the AKC. The dog does not really look like a Weim, even a "dobe-marked Weim", which do exsist.

There are other good reasons to know what breed of dog you have; Weims have a particular vaccination protocol because some have an immune reaction to the normal round of puppy vaccinations. There are also breed specific diseases which Weims may be more suseptible to, such as Von Wildebrend disease. If you have a dog that is supposed to be a purebred, you need to be aware of breed-specific health problems, so it is worth your while to try and determine if your dog is a Weim, a mix breed hound, or a dobe. If you have been swindled by an unscrupulous backyard breeder, you have learned the hard way why so many people in this forum keep begging new posters to do a lot of research and only buy from responsible breeders.

Another one here for Frontline Plus!! (For those who ask about frontline ont themselves, I know that Flea/Tick shampoo on a person will dry their skin and hair out really badly!- I did this when I had a dog come in to be groomed that was INFESTED with fleas and ticks. it took 15 minutes for the water to come out clear rather than rusty brown. Thus after I bathed her, I had the "creepy crawlies" )

As far as breeds go, I see Dobie in her! She sure is a cutie though. Maybe a dobie/weim mix??
