Might go look at a dog tomorrow...(UPDATE!! Pics!)

Okay. I didn't post about it, but we found the PERFECT farm to move to- almost 8 acres, nice house, double fenced and divided into pastures (dog safe fencing, too.) It has a cool split level shed that I'm converting into a small barn, a big chicken coop, AND a 4 run dog kennel. Now, my dogs aren't going to be outside dogs, by any means- but these kennels are lighted, heated/cooled, and have a water supply run out to them. They're also covered/sheltered- so, I'm thinking I could use them in lieu of crates. The hous is smaller than our current house, and we really want have room for a bunch of big dog crates...so this should be perfect. The dogs will still be able to come in and out of the house as they please- but I'm thinking given the option they'd choose to run around the farm anyway, and these kennels will just be bigger, better crates at night and when we're not home. [:)]

Axl and Pepito don't use crates...so Madison, Butter, and Ogre will each get a kennel to themselves...that leaves room for one more. [:D]

I've posted about how I REALLY want a pit and have wanted one for years. We were planning on getting one a couple of months after moving- our finances are fine for another dog now, but this house is crowded and we wanted to wait until the stress of moving was done before adding the 6th and final dog.

Well...I couldn't resist poking around on Petfinder, and today I found a dog in a nearby shelter that looks PERFECT for us: [linkhttp://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=8175386]http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=8175386[/link]

He's only about 30 minutes away...I talked to DH and he says we can call about him tomorrow. We're not committing to ANYTHING yet...we're just going to call and get info about their adoption policy (if it's lengthy and intrusive, I won't do it...I hate that kind of thing.) If their adoption process is reasonable, we'll go out and have a look at him. If we absolutely fall in love...we'll see. [:)] It says he gets along with other dogs, which is a big selling point...but I would have to test that before making a final decision.

Moving with 6 dogs, one of them new, would be hell...I know that...and we're not making any kind of final decision yet. If we DO decide to get him...we'll suck it up for the next 2 weeks. I would NEVER add another dog in this horribly crowded house...but we're only here for 2 more weeks.  If he happens to be the perfect dog, I'll suck it up and we'll manage everything through the move. It'd be difficult, but worth it if he's right for us. [:)]

He is beautiful!  I didn't realize you lived so close to me until I saw his petfinder page.  I'm in Statesboro.

What a handsome boy he is. Good luck on what you decide.

that is a beautiful dog! good luck.

i like his name too. would you guys keep that or change it?

Aw, he's cute, looks like my SIL's pittie mix.

As for the moving, I can sort of relate.  The breed rescue matched me with a dog much sooner than I'd planned (the day after I applied).  This was in mid-April and we've already signed a new lease, but it starts August 1.  She's fine being fostered by the breeder, but it's been torture for me!  And I still have whatever it says in my sig left to go...[>:]

Lol...the one thing I'm NOT overly fond of is his name...so if we got him (big "if!") that would probably change. To what, I have no idea.

Plus, I have a cat named "Jack"...(he lives with my parents, but he's mine...which is a long story) so that would be a bit of a name clash. [:)]

what a sweet little poopie!!  i hope it works out!  really, i do!!!

what do  you think that means when it says "gets along with other dogs his size" he doesn't like smaller dogs or he doesn't like bigger dogs. ???
    • Gold Top Dog
I honestly have no idea- I was wondering about that myself. It WILL be a factor in whether or not we decide to get him- if he has high prey drive (i.e., sees smaller dogs as prey) that will be manageable- 2 of my dogs have a pretty strong prey drive and we have to be verry careful of their interactions with Pepito. So, adding another dog with a strong prey drive wouldn't be too difficult, since we already have that to deal with.

BUT, if he has issues with dogs larger than him...that could be a deal breaker. He doesn't look like a big dog- it looks like Ogre, Madison, Butter, and *Possibly* Axl could all be bigger than him. If he can't get along with dogs larger than himself, that excludes...pretty much all but one of my dogs. So, that wouldn't work. [:(

We'll just have to see when we meet him. When I call, I'm going to ask if I can bring along Ogre and Pepito to meet him- so I could see him interact with my smallest, and my largest dog.

Once we're moved, I'll have the means to seperate a dog aggressive dog from my other dogs. For the next 2 weeks though, that would be a problem- so if I'm going to get a dog before I move, it needs to be one that can coexist with my current dogs for the next couple of weeks- and hopefully, permanantly.

He's cute!!!!!!!! Looks like my mom's Staffy, colorwise, except she has black on her muzzle and doesn't have a white strip down the middle of her face. We spoke to someone at the dog part who had a male Staffy and she said she's had both sexes but the males seem to be better with other dogs than the females she had. And my mom's staffy doesn't like strage dogs, so that may be true. I don't know, that's just what the woman said. Maybe if you're interested enough they'll hold him for you.

As a shelter volunteer, that would be a warning flag for me, if I had other dogs.

Thanks all. [:)] I just called about him, and he's still up for adoption. Their adoption fees are $95 and don't include S/N or anything...so for me that's a bit more than I'd like to pay (If they included SOMETHING in the adoption fee it'd be fine...but they don't) but, we're still going to look at him in a few hours- and if he's perfect, the adoption fee won't be an issue.

True, and like I said, this will definitely be discussed and taken into consideration before we make a decision. In 2 weeks, I'll have the means to seperately house a dog aggressive dog. Right this very second though, I don't.

So, wish us luck! I hope he's as awesome in person as he looks in his pics. [:D]

    AAAAHHHH! CONGRATS TO YOU!!!

    I'm REALLY happy for you!

If you get the beautiful pup, I think you should name him...oh, gosh, I'd say "Bowie" but I think you have a rat named Bowie.
How about Bolan? I'd name him Bolan, but you ALWAYS come up with awesome names for your animals.

    I'm SOOO excited for you!!!!!!

Lovely!!!!! How awesome this must be for you!

Good luck with everything, but I don't think it's a good idea to adopt a dog that wouldn't get along with the ones you have now, I know you have the option of housing them separately, but how fair is that for the dog itself, or what if the aggressive dog gets loose?

I love to rescue as much as the next animal lover, but I have to have a good working pack that gets along and plays well together. Having to constantly worry about dog fights is not my idea of a good situation, just my opinion, though.
