I have a "Wobbler" looking for input (Bevolasvegas)

I have a "Wobbler" looking for input (Bevolasvegas)

Last week, Bevo was diagnosed with a fracture in his scapula, a bone chip, and a cracked rib.  To be sure that these were his only problems, I had his x-rays sent to a radiologist for interpretation.  After reviewing the x-rays, the radiologist has determined that Bev also has "Wobblers" or cervical vertebrae instabilty.

Because he is still able to get around, isn’t seriously unstable when he walks, or paralyzed, he isn’t a surgical candidate right now.  For now, he is wearing a brace on his neck to help try to stabilize the vertebrae, & has restarted a high dose of prednisone.  Bev is tolerating the brace like a champ, & even though he is obviously not comfortable in it, he isn’t fighting it.

With this diagnosis, everything around our house is going to have to change.  He will never wear a collar again, so that there will be no undue stress placed on his neck.  His diet has to change to something that is 22-24% protein.  He has to eat all of his meals elevated.  “Shakable” toys & games of fetch are things of the past.  He shouldn’t climb stairs, jump, or even walk on potentially slick surfaces.  The dog park is no longer an option for him, & he won’t be able to wrestle & play with our other dogs without the risk of a flare up, or worse.

I’m in shock to say the least.  I was expecting after his shoulder & rib healed, that I would have a "normal" dog again.  I have come to realize that Bev will never be completely normal again, & I'm ok with that.

I am looking for alternative ways to control his discomfort.  He is having accupuncture done.  We are also researching/considering gold ball implants as well.

Can anyone think of something else that we may be missing?  Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with gold ball implants?  Firsthand or otherwise.

Oh man, I'm sorry -- that's every dobie owners nightmare.  Does the acupuncturist you are going to do "TCVM"?  There are a lot of the Chinese herbals that are incredibly helpful (I'm thinking the cervical formula Kee is on right now).

I'm also thinking about massage -- that will help keep the muscle tone and the blood moving despite the decreased activity.  The acupuncture should help a TON keeping down that inflammation.  But there are a ton of Chinese herbals that are superb anti-inflammatories that should help  a whole lot.

If you go to the Chi Institute website, and look under "faculty" Dr. Clemmons is awesome.  He does a ton of stuff with DM and other neural/vertebral problems.  He's the head neurosurgeon at U of Florida but he's also huge into the traditional Chinese veterinary medicine and how it can help neural/vertebral problems.  He's just plain an awesome and super nice guy and he would be the best source I know of to give you some direction.

He's into everything from diet on down -- he has given me the most awesome advice in the past just on "what the heck do I do now?".

The other one, if you'd rather, would be to contact Dr. Chrisman -- she was head of the neuro dept. until this past year but SHE is also on the Chi Institute faculty but she's also a mega expert on the Chinese herbals (where Clemmons is more into the acupuncture part).  These folks are known all over the US as cutting edge in what they do.  And you're welcome to tell them I nudged you like a steamroller to talk to them *grin*.  That's not going to get you far, but they KNOW I'm pretty danged verbal about what UF and all the Chi Institute vets have done for me and mine.  (Shoot, it was Clemmons who got ME to go to an acupuncturist for MY arthritis like 8 years ago!)

Amanda -- give me your snail mail address and I'll send you some White Flower Oil to start some elementary massage on Bevo -- Foxy the Mostlie Sheltie ALWAYS maintained it was THE best for bone pain and inflammation.  How that dog *knew* was beyond me, but I've proven it to myself over and over.  Woodlock is awesome for muscle stuff but White Flower has a slim but definite edge on bone inflammation that is incredible.  I've got some extra right now, and I'll get you started and then you can order your own after that.  But let me help you with Bevo this little tiny bit.

You've done all the right stuff to start and your head's gotta be whirling!

Our accupuncturist doesn't do "TCVM" but he has been very helpful to us.  He recommended using White Flower Oil for masages after seeing Bev's intial visit.  I was skeptical at first, but I can see a difference in Bev after using it.  He loves his massages, & relaxes immediately for them.

I haven't found anyone who deals in Chinese herbs in our area.  The closest herbalist is about 3 1/2 hours away from us, and, at least currently, I don't have the guts to transport Bev that far.

Callie, I really appreciate your input.  Thank you so much.  I have been wracking my brain, & researching like heck, trying to make sure that I am not missing anything.

i'm so sorry to hear that! poor bevo! i'm sorry, i have no advice... i wish you and bevo all the best. i hope you two can learn to deal with this with time...

you might want to get a second opinion- it was my understanding that they cannot definitively diagnose wobblers just off a regular x-ray especially if the dog is asymptomatic.

Wow shocked at the least I imagine - poor Bevo.  May be the xray is showing something due to his accident and not wobbler's, certainly I would look for a second opinion.  I don't know much about it but it seems strange that such an active dog would have had this all along.

How did his injuries occur?  Did he demonstrate a balance problem that contributed?  I don't know much of anything about this but  it seems completely out of the blue for a dog that is so active.

sending our best to you all and please keep us updated

I was thinking the same thing... it couldn't hurt to get second x-rays in a month or two just to confirm the diagnosis, right?

I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles and I hope Bevo's feeling better soon... And just for the record, I think Bevo is one of the luckiest dogs out there to have such a loving owner who will take such good care of him.

I totally agree.  I'm hoping that I live this life right so I can come back as one of your dogs.  I have nothing to add to what's already been said except for you're in my thoughts.  Give the oh so handsome Bevo some kisses on his forehead from me.

I have no advice but lots of healing thoughts and vibes coming your way for as healthy and comfortable a life as possible for him!

Wow Amanda, I had no idea when I saw the subject of the post what you were referring to. I'd never heard of it before. How rough for all of you, but if anyone can work thru this, it's you. You're amazing and Bevo is in good hands with you.

((((((((((hugs))))))))) and a nosie kiss for Bevo. That is terrible news. I'm very sorry to hear it, but Bevo is in the best place possible. I have no advice, just had to send some Doberlove his way.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}} from me too; what a huge adjustment for you and Bevo. It's good you found out before he was showing symptoms; all  your precautions should help to slow the progress of this horrible disease. I'm so sorry and will keep Bevo in my prayers.

I have nothing to add except more {{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}} I am not sure what even wobblers are, but wanted to just say that we will be thinking about you and Bevo.

I am sorry to hear about Bevo and do hope Bevo improves and gets use to a new life style.  I thank you for creating this thread because as I read about your experience, it sounds very similar to what I am experiencing with Drizzle.  Drizzle is not steady in the rear when she walks.  I thought it was HD or arthritis and had her x-rayed.  The vet said no HD or arthritis but her nerves are misfiring their instructions to the hind legs.  Drizzle has had neck injuries in the past, mostly from shaking things, and she would be stiff and down for a few days.  Wobbler was never mentioned.  I am going to try and get a referral to a university vet hospital.  Thank you.
