I have been venting a lot lately and appreciate all of the kindness extended but here is just one more that I have to share ..
I have 2 girls in seasons, it is only thier second season but we are ultra careful. Our back yard is a 6 foot privacy fence and we allow the girls out with escort only.. Yesterday we allowed them out they did their business and came back into settle in thier crates... I then let everyone else out they play a bit and wander the yard but after a bit in the already increasing heat of early summer all but two wanted back into the air conditioning.
The phone rang and I answered it to speak with some one about something ...frankly I can't even remember what it was now. One minute I am yakking on the phone refilling the water buckets the next all hell breaks loose, the inside dogs are battle roaring and screaming , I open the door to see what is going on and Zion escapes racing to join in a dog fight between the 9 year old Kota and some strange dog !!! The puppy is dashing in an out looking for a chance to engage as well. I pull Zion off and hand him to my daughter who drags him in the house and comes back at a dead run to find me beating the Heck out of the strange dog, Once I have them broken apart first Nemo was dragged in by the 8 year old and then Kota by my daughter as I am still laying into the strange dog who is ready to continue the fight, we manage to open the fence and force it out into the street. I evaluate the boys, puppy is fine not a mark on him, Zion has a few muzzle bites and one good puncture to his upper leg, But Kota has nearly been scalped. While the leater of his beautiful ears are fine the inside flap has been torn not just open but nearly off ! Daughter races with him tot he vet I begin to track the PIT BULL yes I know this dog, it is the one I have mentioned being walked by the wanna be white teen thug on a tow chain. I get to house, with the cops enroute and demand to see the dog, the husband is scrubbuing his front steps off. " I ain't got no dog" he replies. I isist he does, that I have ssen his kid with it He shrugs and repeats "Aint got a dog" Police arrive , 3 cruisers and I demand they look for the dog... The owner steps back with a smirk and says "look all ya want I aint got a dog"
There was no sign of a dog except for the scars on a tree in the back yard that had been obviously used to chain something. No proof, they are still new to the area and cops can do nothing. I talk to the neighbors they work all the time and while they have seen dogs they don't know for sure if one actually lives there.
Kota underwent 2 hours of surgery to repair the damage , the first time EVER I was not allowed to take a dog home after surgery sinc it was very late in the day and David wanted him on an iv to prevent shock. Kota is home this morning , he has talked long distance to his New York Momma who offered to fly down and comfort him< I requested a scent box instead assurring her I would do everything for the boy but that havig her for 2-43 days then losing her again for a few months may be much harder on him than we think.A friend at AC tells me this am a Pitt was dumped off at the after hours box near the street, that the damage to the dog was so profound they assumed he was just another loosing fighting dog. The vet who had come in to help a tiny breed litter inspected the now euthnanized dog and said this was not a Pitt vs Pitt fight. That the legs was shattered , the clavicle was broken and the throat so badly torn he would have bled out with in a half hour or so more. They took a report but the dog had zero id, no chip, tattoo, or collar so there wa nothing they could do. This is rural , RURAL alabama, just begining to come into the century in may ways , no cameras no security nothing to give indication of who had dumped this dog so callously. The kid has not been seen all day normally we see him dozens of times.... That call to the owner was one of the hardest things I have ever done and she was awesome about everything.... What a failure I feel right now, 30 years and never a problem like this !
I now have Kota cuddled with his mom and I , we will go to umbilical resocialization next week getting him back around large intact dogs I can not allow this to change what has been the sweetest and most loving of boys.
Please keep in mind I cheer for the show pitts, I think them funny and sweet, but everytime I see one of these swap meet dogs I want to rage... So my Mom used to say , Never say things can't get worse it is a challenge to God and the Universe..... my bad mom , I 'll remember your sage advice and make sure I don't get cocky about life again!!
