I would have gone with the ceramic tile as it lasts forever (unless it cracks) and it also requires a cement like subfloor

Yep, and it does crack. We have some hairline cracks that run not thru 1 or 2 tiles, but thru several. We have a concrete subfloor but I guess the ground can still shift Super Angry

Very true.  I used to have a ceramic tile entry and my house is on a wood foundation.  Within a few years they really developed some bad cracks.  Now I have oak so hopefully I won't have to worry about anything happening to that.

I know! When we first moved to NM, we bought a brand new southwest "Santa Fe" style house with tile throughout most of the public space and it cracked in several places. Some MAJOR cracks. Fortunately, the builder replaced the cracked ones.

The cracks we have are like a fault line thru the house. It starts in the entry way and goes thru to the kitchen and back thru the guest bathroom. We probably need to replace 15 or more tiles now but the lot colors are so different that if we do, it'll be noticeable.  We installed it all when we bought the house, so altho we saved on the price, there's a lot of time and effort invested in it Sad

Ours did the same thing! There were 2 "faults". One in the kitchen and one in the hallway. Fortunately, it was Saltillo tile, which all look slightly different anyway, so the new ones didn't stand out.

I've heard that sanded grout is supposed to help the joints be flexible and minimize cracking. Also not having read thru the thread this may be a repeat...they have interlocking tile floor now.....real tiles on pieces of laminate that you click together...those look GREAT and because they are mounted to a piece of laminate flooring cracking isn't an issue.

I vote for Onyx, too. It's a really nice floor.

I like the onyx but wonder if it may be too dark w/ all of the black in appliances and counter top.

I think I would sway toward the red tones to keep the kitchen brighter.  Also like wooden floors in kitchen or the fake wood/ pergo which is pleasant to walk on, and looks pretty nice - easy to clean.

Well, I have discovered that the picture on the site is mislabeled! The color I have been looking at is actually Serpentine and looking at the actual tile, there's quite a bit of "berry" color in it, which I don't like in our kitchen. So, here is the real Onyx plus Basalt and Shale (other colors I'm thinking about)

Onyx: (Classy looking, but dirt will show)

Basalt: (Lighter, more varied, dirt won't show as much)

    Shale: (Just discovered this one...)

Any opinions on these three?  I'm leaning toward the Basalt.

    • Gold Top Dog

I really like the Basalt...those colors complement the color tones in the cabinets and walls.  Also it will also lighten up the room.

    I really like the Basalt!

I like the shale, actually.  I'm more into the darker colors, myself, but I agree that the basalt would look good in the kitchen shown.  I'm just not into the lighter colors with the reddish.....

Its so hard to choose, it never seems to look the same once you get it installed either... definitely need pictures once you make your choice and get it in!

I like the Shale now!! My second choice would still be for the Onyx.

    • Gold Top Dog

I like the Basalt a lot but the Shale is nice too. I personally don't like the Onyx for that kitchen pictured (which actually looks very similar to my kitchen).

I like the shale, too.  It has pretty much the same colors as the basalt, but they're a bit more muted.
