Need Prayer

    Need Prayer

We went to animal control and purchased a lab/shar-pei mix 4 1/2 month old puppy. In the next several days we he wouldn't eat anything.  I took him to a 24 hr dog emergency room and they didn't know what it was.  They gave us some doggy ensure and he ate it but that was all.  That all hapened on Sunday.  On Monday we took him to our old vet and he was diagnosed with parvo.  We made the call to pay the money and have him put in intensive care in isolation.  I would like some prayers for my puppies survival and to make sure he can beat this.  Regardless of anything we just want him to feel loved and know we did all we could for him. Thank you for any support you could give.

    Hope he pulls through.

Was this just animal control, or was it like a shelter? If it was like a shelter, they have no excuse for not vaccinating him as shelters vet their animals.

    Anyway, sending good thoughts.

Have you called the place you got him from and TOLD them?  That means they have a parvo outbreak on their hands.

They may not have known if he was turned around and placed within the 7-9 day incubation period.  And vaccines don't take effect for THREE WEEKS.  Giving a vax to a dog already exposed to parvo can surely bring it out.

Also -- your yard has now been 'exposed' to parvo.  That means you can't bring another PUPPY  (a dog that hasn't been adequately and FULLY vaccinated) into that same yard for at least two years.

That can be a big huge deal -- and honestly you should let your neighbors know this dog had parvo.  It is so incredibly, horribly contagious it's very difficult.

Make sure your home is bleached all over -- if this pup does make it it will have developed some immunity, but if this pup doesn't make it you don't want another pup infected.  Does that make sense?

And yes, surely I will keep you and this pup in my prayers and good thots -- please please update us??

Good thoughts and prayers that your pup makes it through.

Poor little guy. :( I am so sorry and both you and he will definitely be in my prayers.
I think I remember you posting last night about him not eating and I was so hoping it was just the stress of being in a new place. But I am so glad that you are a responsible person and got him to the vet today and I am sure he very much appreciates it, too.  My thoughts and prayers go out to you during this time and please keep us updated.
I would definitely let the place you got him from know as well. Especially if it is animal control. A lot of those animals are there because they didn't have good owners so many of them may not be vacinated. Although I thought that animal control was supposed to provide vacination records to people adopting an animal.  I know that when I got Quincy the rescue payed for all his shots because animal control did not provide them with that information even though they were supposed to, and they were really upset that animal control did not do that.  Maybe it's different in different states, but from what they were saying, I thought it was required.

Sending healing vibes to your puppy  [sm=meditate.gif]  and keeping my fingers crossed. [sm=crossfingers.gif]

Parvo is incredibily contagious, so for a while please stay away from puppies that have not finished their puppy shots.  If you have a pair of shoes that you haven't worn since you got the puppy, put those shoes on after you leave the house, so you won't track Parvo around.

Everything the puppy touched is now contaminated with Parvo.  If you touched the puppy and then touched "something" in your house (without bleaching your hands), that "something" is now contaminated with Parvo.  This includes walls, counters, carpet, furniture, clothes, etc.

Required bleach concentration: 1 part bleach to 10 parts water

The end of the last post above has some treatment suggestions.  One of those is Parvaid which I would be tempted to use prophylactically with any shelter pup that had not completed its puppy shots.

Keep in mind that your puppy will continue to shed the virus for 2 weeks (some vets say up to 6 weeks) even after your dog has recovered. So, you will want to quarantine your home and yourself from other puppies for the next 6 weeks, then do a thorough cleaning

Another recent Parvo thread with a happy ending!!

Ok before I go to bed I will post some more information.  I have already informed animal control that they have had an outbreak and the vet is coming Tuesday to the shelter.  The vet told me to get rid of anything that he touched and we have.  We obviously can't throw away the couch or bed but we are following the strict directions of the vet. The only dog that came over is 1 yr old with all his shots.  I paid for my buddy to have his dog get a booster shot today to be safe.  The vet said for him to not come over for a month. Luckily I am the only one with a dog around my area I view that as a blessing.  Tomorrow I am going to bleach all the surfaces that can be bleached. He received his PV shots on May 2nd.  The vet belives that Tippy contracted the virus before the shots and as calliecritturs stated it does take time for that to take effect.  I just called the er and they stated that they had an IV in him with supplements trying to bring back up his electrolytes. He is staying that same at least not getting worse.  On the positive side he hasn't thrown up or had diarhea since we dropped him off 6 hrs ago.  I don't imagine that we will sleep very good today and we will be staying home from work again tomorrow in case anything changes. Thanks for the bleach concentration amount I was wondering the exact amount and was going to look for it tomorrow.  Thanks to all who responded I will update again tomorrow

I`m so sorry to here the news. I was so hoping when he went to the vet today it would be good news. Healing vibes for you Tippy.

I just woke up and of course couldn't get to the phone quick enough to get an update.  Tippy still hasn't thrown up or had diareha.  The nasal discharge is still happening and the vet tech I talked to said that could be related to another virus. Not sure about that if anybody has any info that would be nice.  The vet tech also said Tippy seems a little more active. Thank God! I know things can get better and then worse but I am still praying and leaving it in God's hands.  The vet comes in at 9:00 and will rediagnosed the condition tonight and I will call in the afternoon and then post another update.  Thanks for all the support still it's needed and appreciated!
