How long do you walk your dog for?

Just a general question for everyone.

I walk my guy at least once a day (a couple of days a week he'll get walked twice a day).  Minimum 30min, maximum 1hr 20min.  Usually around 45 minutes.

We did 2 miles today, in 30 minutes. Zoe walks fast for a little dog!  In this nice weather I try to do 30 min. a day with her, but she runs in the yard and around the house too.

for us it depends on where - hiking could be 3-4 hours. Street walking about 1 hour. But I also have a 65 lb. 9 month  old pup who could easily go for hours and hours. I get tired, she doesn't.
Saturday, for instance, the hike there and back was about 3.5 hours. Molly napped for about 1 hour and then back to being a puppy

Ha ha this makes my dog seem so lazy. Jetta will walk about 25 min and then plop her little bobo down on the side of the street when she feels even the least bit tired. Sometimes i end up carrying her home! She does love walks tho, she just needs to work on her endurance! She gets walked everyday.

Well my bt is good maybe if im lucky for about a hour. But  if he gets tired before then he is done and I will just carry him.

Now my Lab I walk her for about 3 hours. Sometimes more if we go twice a day..  She could prob take a 10 min rest and walk another 3 lol

This is a breed specific question. What kind of dog do you have. As an example...I now give my dogs about 4 hours of walking exercise per day, but I have mals, GSD's, and borders (rotts to but they are lazy ones).

I could walk my borders 12 hours a day and it's not truly enough.  It really depends on the dog, the owner, the terrain, the weather, and all sorts other stuff.

Give me a little more info.

i havnt had my dog 2 weeks yet, shes a mutt with gsd in her and who knows what else.  she weighs 43 pounds.  i take her for a walk/run for about 30 minutes around 1pm while my kids are both in school at the same time and then later in the evening we drive to this semi-secluded area to let her off the leash and run around and play with her for about an hour.  she could go for a couple more hours i think each time.

My Newf (Jillian) - one hour or so in the morning - walking & running.  Sometimes running and playing in the field with a few other dogs. PM depends - could be an hour like in the morning, could be hours hiking.

My Mini Schnauzer (George) - goes out in the morning for about 1/2 an hour - he just runs and runs and runs and runs.  Then comes inside and terrorizes my Newf.  In the PM it varies from 1/2 an hour walk to hours in the woods with Jillian.

Of course, as the weather gets warmer, more time is spent playing at the lake on a daily basis.

Boomer is an 8 month old male cockapoo (33lbs) and our walks usually consists of half the time walking through our neighbourhood (we live in suburbia) and the other half in the park.  The majority of time after coming home after a 45 minute walk he'll lay down and rest and is nice and calm for a long while.

I never "walk" my dogs, they seem to derive no benefit from just walking. They get at least half an hour of steady trotting and around half an hour of sprinting-type exercises every day (with rest breaks, they don't sprint full out for half an hour).

It varies, and depends a lot on the weather.  During the winter we have shorter walks, especially if it looks like it's going to pour any minute.  Today it was gorgeous so we left the house at 7:30 a.m. and got back about 9:15 a.m. and probably covered about 3 miles or so, which included a lot of stops to sniff and/or piddle.  I can give Max more walking time, but I can't really give him the speed he'd like to have - so weather permitting, we hit the little neighborhood dog run or the big dog park a couple of times a week so he can really tear around.

Ash is a 14 month old Australian Cattle Dog and she can go forever. I don't walk or exercise her nearly enough for what she needs. We can go on 3-4 hours hikes and although I can see her slowing down, she will not stop. She could go forever. Walking does nothing for her. My dog needs to RUN. I can almost never let Ash off leash because she doesn't have strong recall and there is just no where around here that I can do so. I have no yard and my parents yard is taken up by a pool, a deck, and a patio. There is some room for her to run, but not like she needs. I took her the tennis courts one time and she ran in full circle sprints for about 10 minutes straight. My poor baby. After that, I knew I needed to exercise her way more. She's a herding dog so there you have it.

I was watching The Dog Whisperer and Cesar was handling this very timid dog (I forget the breed, but it was some kind of hunting dog). The dog hated being walked because he was so scared of everything in the city. So Cesar strapped on some rollerblades because he said he knew the dogs breed were runners. Sure enough, this timid dog took off! I think I need to try that with Ash.

I walk Wesley to and from the park each morning (actual walking about 1/2 hour in all) with 1/2 hour to 45 minutes of running at the dog park.  Then he goes for 1.5 - 2 hours with a walker for a mix of walks and offleash playgroups with the other dogs (varies by day, weather and group of dogs).  In the evening, about 30-45 minutes walk, more for leash manners and the socialization of walking around the city to see and smell everything, this is definitely not exercise for Wes (a lab x border).  I feel that we are giving him a good amount of exercise, but honestly, I am sure he would love to have more [:D].

The episode you're talking about was a Vizla. He was timid. So Cesar used the other end of the leash to help hold up his tail, which helped to elevate confidence in the dog. The owner wanted to be able to rollerblade with his dog. Eventually, he was able to as the dog became more confident.

I walk Shadow ever day, 1 to 2 miles, with some playing in the backyard. In the summer, the walks get short. In the winter, the walks get longer. I have a big back yard so he can run fast, though he has to stop and turn. Eventually, I plan to either have a bicycle or better yet, build a dog cart, as Texas doesn't often get snow. The walk time can be 40 minutes on a short walk to an hour on a long walk. Some days, after walking, etc., I'll take him with me to Petco and he gets more walking then, too, as I park farther away and allow him to pee on bushes rather than in the store.

I walk/run/play with Gracie until she's tired and flops to the ground and won't play anymore. She's usually ready to play again after a few hours of sleep then we do it all over again!
