Pronunciations

Shari was part Samoyed and I always said "Sam-OY-ed" with 3 syllables.  It threw me the first time I heard it on a dog show.

When I adopted Bear, the shelter told me they thought he was part Newfie and Border Collie.  I got the paperwork home and saw that they wrote down "New Finland" and Border Collie.

Samoyed is sammy-ed.  Weimaraner is vye-mahr-ah-ner (at least, that's how I would pronounce it knowing German).  Schipperke is skip-er-keh (in Dutch the "sch" is pronounced "sk", like school, scholar, schedule...).

I had to ask my sis about Beauceron b/c I don't speak French.  I guessed it was bo-sehr-oh, wasn't sure about the "n" on the end. 

Another favorite breed of mine is the Berger Picard, which I believe is pronounced behr-zsay pee-cahr  (the "zsay" meaning like Zsa Zsa Gabor, like a softer "j" sound I guess).  Or you can just call it a Picardy Shepherd.

 I think you are RIGHT about samoyeds, but the announcer's right about Schiperke (skipper-kee).  And Weims are Vy-mer-ah-ner (W = V in German)

Borzoi is Bore-zoy isn't it?

One that bugs me is SCHNAUZER.  Everyone else I know pronounces the ZZZ, whereas I pronouce the Z as "ts" (shnowtser).  After all, it's a german breed, right, and thats how the germans pronounce Z.

And Bichon Frise - Is that Freeze, or Free-zay?  I am never sure about that one. 

 interesting isnt it.. if you love dogs you almost have to become bilingual lol or trilingual or ... depending on how many exotic favourites you have.... you get the picture!!

Chuffy you got me on the schnauzer... i know a small handful of German words and i can follow along with conversations but dont recall anyone using any Z words! but one reason i took an interest in learning German was because of dog breeds and the fact that my hat goes off to the Germans for their skills at producing FINE animals.. still i dont recall "talking dogs" with any of my german friends.. might have to rectify that some day!

I heard a couple of breeds mis-pronounced.  The one that stuck out in my mind most was the Vallhund.  it's Val HUND.  I forgot how the girl behind the scenes pronounced it, but it was way off.  Oh- Samoyed.  What we need to figure out is how to pronounce the "tribe"/group of people they were named after.  That's how the breed name should be pronounced.  Some folks, David Frei included, have said they are named after the two men who developed the breed- one named Sam and the other Ed.  Thus the Sammy-Ed pronounciation. 

As for the Schipperke, I've always heard it pronounced skip-per-kee.  The other night was the first time I've ever heard it pronounced differently.

 I cannot pronounce a lot of the breeds!!  I just guess!  Pretty bad!  The common breeds, I have no problem with!

See I'm not sure.  I go back and forth on Bore-zoy and Bore-zwa.  

Bichon Frise is french, no?  If so I believe Free-zay would be more correct, though one would expect an accent on the e.

I never knew about the German z.  My native tribe is Tsawataineuk so the Ts is familiar to me, but I'm gonna have to work on getting that to come out in the name Schnauzer. 

 Bichon Frise is indeed French, and is prounounced bee-shon free-zay. 

I just watched the Eukanuba show the other day, but I don't know if it was this year's or what? Anyway, one that surprised me was Brussels Griffon (and all the other breeds with Griffon in their name). I thought it was GRIFF-on..like griffin.. but they said grif-FON.

I thought Viszla was vees-la for a while..but I found out it wasn't like a year ago.. And do people pronounce kuvasz differently? I thought it was koo-vash (funny, you'd think I'd've figured out veesh-la from that), but I think they said koo-vas on the dog show?

OH, Ibizan hound.. I read it as "izbian", so I was quite shocked to hear them say ibizan. I think I might be a teeny tiny smidge dyslexic. hehe

And Keeshond..well I just thought it was spelled pretty phonetically. But now I can't even remember how it's actually pronounced.. Kay-sond or something?

I tend to pronounce words weirdly a lot..ahhh the woes of reading.

Keeshond is also Dutch.  It's case-hond.  My great uncle's name was Kees (case).  "Hond" is dog.

Yep, that's how it would be in Castillian Spanish. (Accent on the "bee.";)

I can't really pronounce Rascal's breed... I feel like such a tool when people ask, too. I say "PAP-ee-yohne" and people just look at me blankly, so I typically add, "Apparently it's French for 'butterfly'?..!" BF says it makes me sound like not only a tool but an ignorant one, at that, when I say that... but at least I feel less like a pompous snob. "He's a papillon, you moron. Isn't it obvious? It's a French word, you cretins wouldn't understand!" lol! 

I have always pronounced it vy-ma-RAH-ner, as it is a German breed and in german the W is always prounounced as a V and the V is always prounounced like a F 

and Volkwagen is Folksvagen

I love the name of Papillon.  I took French all through school starting in first grade so the french names don't bother me much.  Especially Papillon since it is the word for butterfly, it was a word I learned.  Others I can add the accent to, or generally know how the French would pronounce it.  Beauceron is another that flows off my tongue, though I'm not entirely sure I say it right since I've never heard it pronounced before. 

Bo-sir-own, as pronounced by the handler of the top female Beauceron (who happens to be a very good kisser, and super friendly dog, LOL... I've met her twice, in the last... three months).
