    She is spayed!!! ***UPDATE***

I am in a big delema. Onix is pregnant and I can't afford to get her spayed. The vet is asking $150 to get her spay I don't have the money. I contacted the Labrador Rescue of NC to see if they would help but I have not recieved a reply after we exchanged information. Is there a rescue around NC that could take Onix in? I am desperate because I keep feeding her and all is going to her pups. I don't know what to do. I tried my piggy-bank (Shailer's emergency money) but I don't have money at the moment. My parents are in a tight situation at the moment and can't spare any money. I was thinking of getting a sponsor or donations. I need HELP!

I noticed in your profile that you have Shailer, were did Onyx come from?  Is she yours?  Did you ask the Vet is you could make payments will that help the situation?

Please wait for others more involved in resuse to answer and I am hopeful you will get some good suggestions.  Poor Onyx, is she ok?

Onix was found by my father as a stray in the park. We took her in because she was skinny and we where hoping we would find her owners. The owner turn out but didn't want her anymore. They don't do payment plans at the vets and they are already reducing the cost. I have contacted the humane society in Greenville and hopefully they will be able to help me in this situation.

Oh I understand, nice of you to take her in.  So once the puppies are born you will get her spayed?  When are they due?  How long after before she can be spayed, I would think at least 8 or 9 weeks? at a minimium right?   What are you going to do with the puppies?  Or are you aborting the puppies and spaying at once for that price?  I guess I don't understand the urgency for the money right now is the puppies aren't born yet?  I knwo this is a situation you need to rectify but why URGENT now?

The thing is that I dont want to have the puppies. I want to get her spay ASAP. I don't know how far into the pregnancy she is but she still has weeks to go. She is not gaining weight because everything is going to the pups but if I increase her food she regurgita it. I just need advice on what I can do and rescue information that would take her in.

There might be some organizations here that you haven't tried yet.  Poor Onix, she reminds me of my childhood lab Jarva.  Sad   I hope you find some help soon!

I'm nowhere near NC and unfortunately, can't help, but I do hope there is someone here who can point you in the right direction. Just wanted to add in my 2 cents regarding Onyx not gaining weight ... she *may* be too far in for a spay anyway, if she only has a few more weeks to go. It especially sounds like that since she's vomiting - that usually means the pups are taking up a great deal of room in her abdomen & her tummy has no room to expand. The solution to that problem can be to feed her 3-4 smaller meals instead of 1 or 2 larger ones. I know you still need to re home her, but the smaller meals would help you out in the meantime because you'd be feeding less overall, but still have her maintain her weight.

Thanks for the tip. How much should I feed her? 1 cup 2cups? I need to see how I can work that into my schedule. From Monday thru Friday I go to HS from 8am to 3:10pm, so I could feed them (both Shailer and Onix before I go to school (7am), then when I get home from school (3.10pm) and then at night before I go to bed (9pm). I will be sending emails everywhere. I don't know how far into the pregnancy she is my friend estimated she would be due in 3 weeks or so.

Have you shopped around?  I know low cost clinics are in the area - I actually work at a shelter in SC that does spays for way less (female dogs are $55 I think), though I don't know how that would change given the pregnancy.  Any idea how far along she is?!

Have you looked into CareCredit?  it's not ideal as you'll still need to pay it off, but it's not as bad interest rate wise as a standard credit card.  One of my coworkers uses it and says it works well.

eta if she's really only 3 weeks from whelp, you might have trouble finding a vet who will spay, though some do, especially in situations like this.  Good Luck!

I think you are doing really well for this dog and especially admirable because you are so young.  I will do some thinking and see what I come up with.  I am in Raleigh and there are quite a few independent rescues around - what is your SPCA like?  There are foster networks to that if I can get names might help.  I contacted the lab rescue a while back about someone's dog and they took purebreds only Super Angry  so I don't think they'll be much help.

hang in there keep doing the best you can and hopefully a solution will be found

I live about an hour away from Raleigh. My local SPCA is just the local vet that runs the humane society. They are at the moment full and can not take her in. I would really appreciate your help.

Depends on how large a dog she is, and how much weight she needs to gain. How much are you currently feeding her? Try keeping up that amount for the next few days - for example if she's eating 6 cups daily, feed 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, and another 2 cups in the evening. If she keeps up weight or gains on this new regimen, you may be able to slightly decrease one of the meals but a half or full cup. Remember, you don't want to keep her overweight either. Anyway, I've always found that if I have a dog who has a hard time keeping on weight, the smaller meals always seem to help, as the body can absorb more of the nutrients if it's not being bombarded with so much food to digest at once.

She is skinny. I can see her ribs and her backbone. I can also feel them. I will try to take a picture tomorrow. I think I will be doing an appointment on Monday to atleast get her rabies shot. I am feeding her 2 cups currently. The other day I fed her 4 cups and she regurgitated all of it. I will feed her 2 cups in the afternoon and 2 at night.
